WORKAROUND: Coinbase forcing users to use PLAID if you want to buy crypto-- either that or you gotta eat ridiculous surcharges by using alternative payment methods. Oh and the trick to cancel out the input to then enter your acct info manually does not work, it says your account is not eligible-always! Only way to get around this is by opening a new dedicated account ( for example add a low cost savings account that allows ACH) and then create an entirely separate online profile/login where that is the only acct you have there. This way when plaid wants to you to bend over they not gonna see anything but this one account and will not have access to all your banking history, credit accounts, investments and whole life or credit card purchases etc in your main profile. If possible use use a bank that has an OAuth type / API connection so you don't have to create another profile and instead your bank will allow you to select the one account you give plaid access to. Plaid and these payments do not give any choices-- and most banks don't either but some do if they have the API (wellsfargo, chase etc) so look into them if you don't want to do this work around.

Etsy is now forcing sellers to use this in 30 days or not be able to sell any longer. Many shops say they'll be leaving. The app wants your username and PASSWORD for your bank, along with routing and account number. Etsy will probably make more money from Plaid than from Etsy seller fees.

For a good while now, Plaid no longer gets your username and password. Instead, you log in directly with your bank, which then behind the scenes provides Plaid a code that they can use to get limited access to your bank. The code can be revoked at any time. This is not a new process, it's called OAuth, and has been around for about a decade now for things like "Sign in with Google", but banks only now started to use this.

From my own experience: If your bank or credit union uses a two step login identification verification process that goes like this, first you login in, then next step the bank or credit union stops you and says its going to send you a Code number via a text message, an email, or phone call, that on a separate screen, you look up and return to the first screen, and use to fill in a blank line, then Plaid will stop this process and send you a message that says it can't continue with your bank to bank connection, because it can't connect if you use this kind of two party verification. The only option left would be to login to your bank or credit union and remove, if allowed, the two step verification, back to a single step. But that's throwing away an important method to prevent hackers from getting into your bank or credit union accounts. Two step verification is becoming more widely used as a defense against relentless nation sponsored hackers and others that are a growing internet problem.

Hi Josh. I wasn't able to watch this video with sound but I did with captions so I hope you didn't cover this question... how is PLAID different from PayPal? I just had my prepaid American express card used to make 2 payments to an individual within only a few hours of me loading my only grocery and pet food money onto the card. I have no idea who did this and American express said the case is closed coz they deemed the transactions legitimate. I was wanting to go the route of virtual credit cards or PayPal but now you have me really thinking about what truly are my options in keeping what little money I have safe from hackers and thieves. I know you probably get loads of questions and can't personally reply to all of them so no worries if I don't get a reply. I've never used an apple product in my life. This is the first email I ever received like this. Is it just coincidence that I had recently (within last 6 months) used Plaid, and gave them my bank log in credentials? Coinbase was one company for which I needed to use the Plaid verification, but there were other online brokerage accounts. I changed my password after using Plaid each time, but I'm now very skeptical that the log in credentials are safe with Plaid.

Your better off talking or dealing with your financial institutions directly let them who hold your money tlk to each other not give it to a middle man...People who hold your money want to keep you investing in them. They will both work together on your behalf to make you more because it makes them more... If you give it to a middle man(plaid)...People who do not have your interest are looking at it and using you information for free and making money on you with you getting nothing...Keep your privacy safe.. You have accounts ex...Tell Fidelity ,to talk to Vangaurd, tell Vangaurd to talk to your bank or banks...You get my drift? That way you have control of them who want to make money for you. Institutions use this(plaid) because it saves them money and less work..period. Thank you for this video I'm glad I did not sign up for plaid.

I spent so much time being told I’d be able to “just pay”… but their main business seems to be as data scrapers/data brokers via the company they keep, which it seems shares this data - ie eerily ALL your data, NOT just financial data - with whomever it wants. I need to trust bank with a lot of data, but bank only seeks in the main that which enables financial services to be mutually beneficial (and yes, maybe more for them than “us” but there are still sone seemingly basic limits on what they seek to know snd to share/sell in terms of data). One reason two banks sued PLAID in 2020 and 2021 (one of these banks is world’s fourth largest by capitalization). USDOJ and FTC apparently also took action recently against Plaud arguing it took more data than needed for stated or reasonable purposes, and presented antitrust concerns, etc etc. I’ve not read the allegations but at least one dud lead to this tiny settlement on behalf of a not-tiny # of consumers (allegedly around 98million people). Companies like AirBnB do not disclose their own role in the process… I found a vacay place I loved, knowing the rural (yet fairly costly) area of the world it was located in. They had me wasting days of my life with blow-offs intended to get me to agree to pay with plaid (“played” as termed in the comments); when I declined they offered STRIPE, a few times. READ THE TERMS, PEOPLE. Those are just what you’re gyvung permissions away by law (to the extent it ever can be considered legal, and much I think cannot and is not in places outside increasingly lawless countries like the USA (ironic). I doubt they insist in sane terms for E.U., and E.U.-area nations (eg Lichtenstein) though I’m not sure if the differences… except a review of ONE of airbnbs papers on its “terms” immediately sets forth how Americans have fewer rights than (majority-time) E. U. residents.

But other than a subset fir say, a high security clearance, I am not disclosing anything about for my entire life from day 1 to any date in the future, nor giving “ carte Blanche” to (additively) peek anytime. When they threaten arbitration I’m like, OK, send me your list of arbitrators, I’ve done arbitration before.
