Hey Ian, this story is crazy, and I’m so glad ur okay! You didn’t let anyone down, if anything, your hopefulness & perseverance are so inspiring, and something to look at as an example. The brain fogs sound a little scary, so just stay safe, and make sure you’re feeling close to 100% before going back to physically demanding activities. Again, so glad you’re okay, and can’t wait to see what you do next :) -Calvin
I'm so glad you are ok, the way you hit your head is no joke,,, I've ran 13 marathons so far and they don't get any easier, you just learn to cope with the pain and challenges and adjust accordingly. By watching this video I really hope your audience understand that running a marathon is very serious you need to respect the distance, there is way too many videos on RUclips of influencers making it look like its easy and no training is needed if you are young and fit so thank you for being honest and open. Good luck to you and I'm sure you'll do great in your next Marathon.
Wow, glad you're alright now. People say we learn more through failures. I was there and didn't realize there was a medical emergency at the finish, but it was probably 20-30 minutes afterward. Coming from the freezing midwest I knew I needed to slow down, but I'm also much older and have been running for years. I like your spirit, best of luck in your future races!
I have completed 3 marathons and luckily I’ve never experienced something like this, but one thing I want you to know is to understand what exactly you’re doing. If it’s a hot day or a race that is traveling distance than pace yourself. Don’t go all out or try to break any records because I find it hard pushing a faster pace after the first 15 miles. That’s probably why your body went in such shock. Traveling is also exhausting so that explains all how you felt afterwards. Great job for this accomplishment and I hope you continue running these marathons 💪💯
Thank you for sharing and so glad you're ok! Ive been training, slowly. I might end up doing hapalua though haha.Hearing your thoughtful story is helpful. But more importantly, glad you are okay and good to hear you had people taking care of you.
This got me emotional, I know what a heat episode can do to you. That heat and humidity can sneak up on you, it sounds like you had full on heat stroke. Also, you are very mature for a 17 year, especially pacing your friend. No one is disappointed in you not finishing, just thankful you are ok. 👍
Ran my first marathon this year after overcoming some medical issues. I applaud your honesty and although it might be embarrassing, you are brave to even share this story with all of us. Hold your head up high and above all, you're a true inspiration for all of us no matter what you think.
Cool that everything's fine for you! The footage of you falling is terrifying! It must feel so strange to think you're dead and then realize you're not-what a huge relief!
Glad to see you recovered from the scary incident. The race day weather is too warm and humid for marathon. Forget about A goal. People will be happy with B or C goals.
Thank you for sharing your marathon. This was my 7th time running in Honolulu and this year it was particularly difficult for me because of the heat. I come from Berlin in Germany. Your story touched me a lot and I am very happy and glad that you are feeling better again... all the best for the future and stay healthy 🙏🤙
I have been a medical voly at the HNL marathon about 14 times with all but 3 at the finish line MASH ( medical ) tent. The stories I can tell are endless. Ian did you get you Malasada?
Extremely scary experience to go through but glad it doesn’t deter you from your passion of running, I couldn’t imagine the pain of going 26 miles 😅, good luck on your next marathon!
Wow that's crazy and glad you recovered fine, thanks for sharing. Sounds like you had a heat stroke. Looked like a pretty nasty fall on the head too so that didn't help either. Looked like you hit the metal barrier and the ground. If not already, you should get checked out by your doctor/neurologist and follow up with some scans like CT to be safe.
This life-threatening event has made you a stronger person. The fact that you're sharing your story is proof. Im a marathon runner, and im grateful to have heard it💯💪🏾😊
Wow. Good thing you're ok! What do you think caused it ? Heat exhaustion? I can't get under 5:15 so you are amazing for what you did!!! You walked back to the hotel so really you did finish 26.2 that day. I may do the half in sf but way way slower than you. 😂 I'm going to run Oakland with the 6:00 pace group and i signed up for Honolulu in December
Good, you're fine. We want to know what energy gel brand, energy drink, or food you take before and after. have you ever drink at all during the run at aid station? Can you share with us?
Hey Ian. Thanks for sharing your story, glad your okay again. I went through some of the same experiences last year during Munster Marathon. The brain fog and acceptance is scary, looking forward to your comeback. Keep it up All love - Christian
Glad you're okay!!! What was your nutrition strategy ?? You were def under fuelled and burned up in that heat. Recover well and keep inspiring others !!!
I also recall my experience of trying to resist passing out after an allout 10K (after a long time of no running). The whole time while my body was trying to shut down, I was only thinking of my parents and what would they go through.. In the end, walked through and fainted just in front of the medical support personnel. I completely understand the feeling of trying to complete the race, I was also, showing the team my strava and telling them "i finished! I finished!" 😅
Wow this is the exact marathon that I want to do as my first one. Your experience though is insane. Glad to hear you’re ok. Love your vlogs, can’t wait to see more!!! But just not of you dying… 🙌🏼🙂
holy moly ian, when you told us what happened i couldn't believe it but now that i actually know what happened its even more crazy. You're a great friend hope you're fully recovered now. have a great Christmas. -Veer Bhalla
Dude - I am a marathon runner but I wouldn’t think for a second about pushing to the finish after what you went through. There are many marathons out there but you only have one life. Run smart.
You should probably get a very thorough examination. Passing out 3 or 4 times could be a sign of or a cause of something damaged in your brain or heart.
Hawaii is all heat and humidity. It's actually been getting more humid over the years making me keep it to shorter distances such as 10k or less over the years.
I'm glad that you're okay but definitely get checked out with a CT and follow up from your concussion, forgetful memory and heat stroke. The after effects on the brain from the stroke and seizures aren't seen until later. I didn't finish my HNL marathon attempt either my legs lost feeling, body was giving up and my legs were numb for hours that the PT had massage it as well as bring me lots of strong electrolytes hydration at the main medical tent after I was medical shuttled van from Hawaii Kai Costco to the finish line medical tent. It also took me about two hours to get warm with the warm foil blanket (my body was shaking uncontrollably feeling cold even though it was super hot and humid), leg massages and hydration. I've never done a marathon since, but finished a half marathon as a one and done. I keep it 10k or less nowadays for health safety and longevity reasons.
basically when my parents were trying to help me, my sister stayed on the side to film me…she knew I was making a YT video so she thought the footage might be useful (it was)
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. ~ Romans 10:9-10

"Everything you ever wanted to know about yourself, you can learn in 26.2 miles." Happy your alive and okay now
Thanks man, that’s so true!
Nah. I still wanna learn more.
Omg I had no clue this happened. Super happy you're okay man! We ran together a little at the run club and the race - excited to follow your journey

Super grateful ur okay man, ur recollection of this experience gave me chills 😭
It was a very scary experience but i just tried to share my story in the most authentic and real way possible. Didn’t sugarcoat anything lol
Dude! RESPECT for doing this. N talk about a scare. Glad your alive.
Your story was told with such sincerity and humility. Thank you for sharing.
Surprised you weren't taken to hospital for some observations overnight. Heat stroke and concussion is no joke! 😮

Oh man I’m so glad you’re ok! That’s scary. I ran the Honolulu marathon but ran/walked it.

You’ll be back next year with success. You’re young, you’re wild and you’re free.
It's unusually warmer and humidity this year.
Running a marathon in such humidity is no joke. Ran it in 2018 and I was dying out there
Thank you for sharing your marathon. This was my 7th time running in Honolulu and this year it was particularly difficult for me because of the heat. I come from Berlin in Germany. so glad that you are okay. pls be careful. hitting your head is no joke ..again be careful.
I have been a medical voly at the HNL marathon about 14 times with all but 3 at the finish line MASH ( medical )

I'm sure you have plenty of stores at the main medical tent at the HNL marathon. It's like the ER triage tent for runners and walkers.
Extremely scary experience to go through but glad it doesn’t deter you from your passion of running, I couldn’t imagine the pain of going 26 miles 😅, good luck on your next marathon!
oh for sure! I'm never stopping, I'm just..taking a step back :)
Glad your okay now, you’re an amazing runner and because of you, I decided to try to do the deitz and Watson half marathon and I got through it
Glad you are ok! You killed it either way! 💪
Love this so much thank you for sharing. Crazy.

I was there and saw you on the ground with the emergency personnel surrounding you. Glad you're okay.
Doing my first marathon in February , now I'm terrified lol
You should probably get a very thorough examination. Passing out 3 or 4 times could be a sign of or a cause of something damaged in your brain or heart.
Your body would have given you some warning signs during the race and most likely, you ignored them. Listen to your body during a race.
may this never happen to you again vro 😿 you're so awsum!!

Glad your okay but why you running a marathon at 17? Most won't even slow you to until your 18. I'm surprised Honolulu let you.
You should get a CT scan of your head, especially since you’re still experiencing memory loss.
You looked ok, but probably dehydrated and the slam against your head probably need you up.
