  • Tom King's Batman run might be the most divisive in the character's history. You either love it or hate it. So I decided to go back and re-read the run so far and give my thoughts on it. Let me know how you feel about Tom King's Batman in the comments.
    Don't know much about Batman comics? Watch my video here:

    The weird thing about Tom King is that his runs on Vision, Omega Men and Mister Miracle were so absolutely fantastic that I question whether or not the Psycho Pirate got to him or not.

      Tom King's Vision: *Machine boy or whatever from another then running series acts out of character, kills a good guy, and then dies*
      Tom King's The Gift: *Booster Gold, from another then running series acts out of character, gets tons of good guys killed and causes massive trauma, then gets put in a mental home at the end*
      Tom King's Heroes In Crisis: Wally West from another then running series acts out of character, kills tons of characters from then running series, then gets locked up*
      Tom King's Sequel to the Button: Barry Allen, Iris West and Batman act out of character, angst over their 'failure', and Iris West breaks up with the Flash.
      And people wonder why I'm not a fan...
      The funniest part is that after Iris was dumped, the very next issue of the Flash undid that by having her basically say she wasn't thinking clearly in a big fuck you to TK, along with a later issue in that run revealing that Reverse Flash using speedforce inception to make Wally go nuts and for Flashpoint Batman to become stupid. I love this run of Flash~

    your are missing the subtext of i am suicide . there is a reason the story start with the sequence of bane caged in that prison cell were the water tide rise and falls.
    cause that idea of the water tide rise and falls keeps repeating itself through all of tom kings's run on batman ...it use to represents batman and Gotham.. and it like the anxiety and depression ..it comes and goes away. in an endless cycle.
    11:19 the friends and family he keeps getting kill cause he keep dragging them into his life. well believes it or not.. Family does not cure clinical anxiety and depression. it makes it easier like in mister miracle but it doesnt fix it.

    It’s fun going back to this video now that we are where we are in the run currently. Personally, I feel it’s the worst Batman run I’ve read since I started reading in the early 90’s. Issue 82 just came out. This entire run could have been told in 20 issues. King just doesn’t understand Batman. He’s turned him into an emotional wimp, destroyed Thomas Wayne, Catwoman has become annoying and his mommy, and he’s also missed the mark on Bane. I can’t wait until this abysmal run is over. I’ve never seen a writer waste so much time of talented artists. Clay Mann had to draw some of the most boring issues in this run. Oh and now we know that Tom King has based this entire series off his own marriage. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    • @TheFLAMEXD
      @TheFLAMEXD 3 года назад +1

      While I get the frustration about the wimp part, how the hell is Batman being emotional a BAD thing? His entire crusade is built upon his emotions. His anger, his rage, his determination. But guess what? He’s also kind, compassionate, understanding and loving.

    • @jeffhabib6673
      @jeffhabib6673 3 года назад

      @@TheFLAMEXD Being emotional and using your emotions are different. He was an emotional wimp in this book. Constantly in his feelings crying about something to Selina. What you’re talking about is Bruce using his emotions and turning them into something good. Using his anger and channeling it is what the character is all about. That is not being emotional. When I say emotional, I’m talking about Bruce lashing out at a child and striking him because that child said he was worried about him. Did you read the wedding issue? That letter was something a 13-year-old would pass to his gf in school. He acted like an emotional child. Batman controls his emotions. This was not Batman. This was Tom King as Batman. What you’re talking about is fine. That is using the emotions he may be feeling and channeling them. Not actually acting out those emotions which is what King did.

    • @TheFLAMEXD
      @TheFLAMEXD 3 года назад

      @@jeffhabib6673 I needed the context to understand your point and you have it to me. Too many times I have seen many misunderstandings of Batman as a character. Tom is definitely someone who doesn’t understand

    • @jeffhabib6673
      @jeffhabib6673 3 года назад

      @@TheFLAMEXD I guess the best way to describe it, from my perspective, would be to say that Tom King’s Batman was immature emotionally. I thought he had some cool concepts, but his understanding of Batman, execution of the story, and the dialogue was so bad it was distracting. Obviously just my opinion and anyone who liked it, that’s cool too.

    Fascinating to see an opinion anout King's run that isn't strictly negative or positive.

  • @kyleolson8977
    @kyleolson8977 4 года назад +11

    I have to talk about this dog tag thing. I went back to the comic to see the context and they don't give us much more about the numbers than what you mention in the video.
    The idea that you can combine numbers to find secret meaning, it's numerology, generally a sort of magical thinking. People want to find lines between things, so they play with numbers until they find something they can connect, and if you add numbers up enough different ways. As a made up example: There were 300 men and 11 horses that attacked a town. A horse is like 3 men, so that's 333 and they attacked twice, that's 666 the number of the beast. Whatever. And people who think this way might try to arrange numbers in a manner than adds up to something for them. It's pure woo, nonsense, even in the DC universe most of the time.
    The argument King could make is that Batman is finding the clues that Waller put in. If that's the case then there are two options. The first is that Waller believes in Numerology and hid the clues herself. Of all the characters in the DC universe, Waller seems like the absolute least likely one to leave in secret superstitious clues that get her caught. She values her objectives over everything else including the lives of others. Why would she throw in a clue to get caught? I suppose it could be argued that one of other members of task force X made the dog tags, but we're fixing the story for King and...we'll get to the last part.
    Alternatively, it could be argued that the dog tags were to help identify the members of Task Force X for Waller. If that was the case, first, why include anything that refers to X at all? Other than the fact that she clearly does NOT need any help identifying the guys because she knows exactly what's going on and they're not mixed in with other guys, and even if they were she would know who here guys were, why wouldn't she use a signal that implicates someone else or something that doesn't exist that she can identify?
    And how does the numbers adding up to 24 help? If the coded message is the total of the dog tags, unless we're doing numerology, make the total 32 or something instead of 24/X, a code number she knows. Or, there are other sneakier ways to create hash codes with numbers than cannot be reverse engineered. One lazy way is you could create a hash code algorithm which only has 26 outputs and run randomly generated numbers through until you hit 27 for the guys that came out as 24 and a human brain could not reverse engineer this by looking at it.
    And 24=X is the only answer for 24? It could be a day, a time, a place reference since were so thin. Remember that guy that died on the 24th? There are 24 hours in a day. Maybe it's DoomsDAY or the Clock King or Doris Day. Or maybe it's Jack Bauer or Kiefer Sutherland, whichever one exists in the DC Universe. And X? I suppose in the Marvel Universe this would be less specific than DC, but in DC it could be Red X or Xax or X-Bomb Betty or X-21 or X-24 or X-2-Y or just something labeled X that Batman doesn't know yet and might never know.
    Batman also says the serial numbers seemed random at first It would be like looking at any computer generated number and finding meaning. Batman decided whoever sent these terrorist did decided to hide a message either for practical or numerology reasons. And that message came from adding up all the numbers, which is not a way that any real coded messages are sent. And that the number was a letter in the English alphabet. And that since the Letter was X, it must be Task Force X, and that therefore the most emotionlessly pragmatic character in the DC universe used this stupid method so that she could get caught doing things that only work if nobody knows she did them.
    *****
    Alternatively, King could have had Batman find an "Encrypted Drive" on one of the guys and sent the data back to Alfred who run it through the magical Bat computer which decrypts it which we believe is a thing Batman can do in the DC universe. The drive contains a message between the terrorists talking about Waller and none of us has to spend any time thinking about how very stupid the adding up to 24 was.

    I like Tom King. Vision was really good. Mister Miracle was really good. Grayson wasn’t too bad. His concepts are always good. I didn’t hate the idea behind Heroes in Crisis. I didn’t hate the idea behind War of Jokes and Riddles. Those two were just horribly executed (and I hate that he killed Roy Harper).

    Night Of The Monster Men is 90% a Detective Comics story. It has 0 effect on Batman but is crucial to detective comics, and it's aftermath is important up untill the very end.

    I personally loved his run on batman I found it a great take, and I loved the way that King managed to deconstruct batman and bring him from the point that he was at the beginning where he was willing to die easily. It takes Batman through every possible low and high that he could go through, his high being when he is engaged to Catwoman. Eventually Catwoman leaves him on the alter, and Batman descends into madness, and by the end Batman finally learns how to take the pain of his parents death, and move on. Learn to be happy. I personally found it a fun great insanely emotional run on batman. You can have whatever opinion you want, but I would recommend that you at least give the run a try.

  • @The_Catman

    I think the suicide thing is pretty in character.
    In real life, the explanation of the superhero complex (someone who helps other no matter what and seems to be interested only in that to the point the crusade is unbearebly self-harming) always hides a death wish.
    100% of the times the "superhero" is just a narcisistic way to escape pain by dieing.
    It's a fitting interpretation of the Batman.
    It fits perfectly his new 52 version, or his Nolan version, for example.
    Of course it depends by the writer
