This song is about being obsessed with someone while being so wracked with insecurity that being in love drives you crazy, and trying to hide your feelings from them. It helps to know that "losing your religion" is Southern (R.E.M. is from Georgia) slang for "at the end of my wits/losing my shit," and also to know that Michael Stipe, the lead singer/songwriter, is gay, and so he's really talking about being in love with another guy, a guy who probably isn't gay, and being afraid of giving himself away.
Also, just for future reference, the name of the band is pronounced "Arr Eee Emm," with each letter said separately. "R.E.M." is an acronym for "rapid eye movement," which is movement in the eyes that occurs when you're asleep and dreaming. They're a great band, one of the major players in 90's Alternative Rock. You should check out their songs "Stand," "Happy Shiny People," "Everybody Hurts," and "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?"

A point to it with this song and the band in general.
When he grew up, and when he made this music, the world had a very different view on being gay.
Putting the lyrics into the context of him living in a world where in general people thought he was doing something wrong ( and not like today where in general people think its normal for people to follow their heart )
A bit like with Queen, it was something that could ruin people, and there where aids, that also was used against gay people by society in general.
And putting that into the lyrics makes them stand more clear. its not just to fear to say to much because of love, but because if you say to much in a world where what you are saying can be used against you.
And many things, there are really layers to these lyrics.

It's a double entendre. On the surface, it could be about somebody getting cussin' mad, but on a deeper level, he could be hinting that he's literally ready to give up on religion in all forms.

Have to tell you - you are extremely astute for one so young. I was a teacher for almost 25 years, so I've worked with many hundreds of kids, mostly high school age. Your willingness to dig into the meat of a song and work the meanings out of it goes beyond what people two or three times your age are willing and able to do.

R.E.M. (and when you say it, you spell it out, like R-E-M) has decades of singles for you to choose from, so it's only right that you start with what is undeniably their biggest hit. Michael Stipe is one of the preeminent vocalists and songwriters of the 80s, 90s, and beyond. There are too many great songs for me to recommend, so I'll just list a few of my favorites - "Everybody Hurts" (one of the greatest songs EVER), "Radio Free Europe" (their very first hit), "Bang and Blame", "Man on the Moon", and "What's the Frequency Kenneth?" And yes, R.E.M.'s music is very artistic. They make you think. The lyrics are deep, often so much so that you can't discern a meaning. But that doesn't make it any less enjoyable to listen to.
Love them all but my fave is the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine.

REM is REM. Hard to really classify beyond "alternative rock." As a Georgia girl, I grew up with their music and I never get tired of it. Every album sounds different, but all sound like REM. Highly recommend some of the older stuff "It's the End of the World As We Know It" and "Perfect Circle." Maybe "Driver 8." Also "Bittersweet Me," "Orange Crush".... I could really go on and would eventually have covered all their albums.

"Losing my religion" is a southern phrase meaning about the same thing as "being so disoriented that you can't point to which way is up", just way more picturesque and way more serious.
The instrument that stands out is the mandolin. It's like a little acoustic guitar sort of instrument and once R.E.M. played this tune on SNL and it was maybe one of the 5 greatest musical moments of 50 years of SNL. 😁
Rod Stewart has the mandolin in a vast majority of his music.

Mike Stipe ( singer) was dear friends with Kurt Cobain. Mike Stipe and Patti Smith, the poetess of New York punk and CBGB's, did a gorgeous song together, called Ebow, the letter. It is serenely, hauntingly addictive.

This is what is known as alternative music. R.E.M. pronounced R - E - M are their own sub genre within the genre of Alternative music. They started losing something of what made them R.E.M. after their album “Monster.” I remember the VMA’s the summer of 1991, right before my freshman year in high school. They won a lot of awards that year. Michael Stipe, the lead singer, wore layers of t-shirts so every time they came up he wore one with a different saying. For their last award he kept stopping during his speech to take a shirt off because he wore one for every award that they had a category for and he wanted to show them all.
Might also be worth noting that many people (myself included) consider this one of the best, if not the best, music video of all time. So many subtle details to the story it tells.

They started when they were college students in Athens, GA. They were college radio darlings in the 80s when college radio was all alternative. They eventually had some decent top 40 radio friendly hits when alternative became more mainstream. I saw them in concert in the late 80s. Lots of hits to choose from.

Losing My Religion, released as the first single from the R.E.M.’s 1991 album Out of Time is definitely a remarkable song. With its beautiful, and rather surreal music video, it listed 4th on The Billboard Hot 100, was nominated for several Grammy Awards from which won two, and was constantly spun on the MTV.
The music video was directed by an Indian director - Trasem Singh, who admitted that it was modeled after the Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings in which an angel crashes into a town and the villagers have varied reactions to him. The clip has a moody art house feeling to it, and was created in a style of a type of Indian filmmaking, where according to Stipe everything would be “melodramatic and very dreamlike”. The video was also based on the inspirations drawn from an Italian painter Caravaggio, as the scenes from the clip strongly resemble the style of the painter’s work, and filled with religious motives and tableaux, or, so called “living images” portraying Indian deities.
Many controversies occurred with the song’s questioning of faith, however unlike it may seem, it actually is about unrequited love. The phrase “losing my religion” is an expression from the southern region of the US, that means “at my wit’s end,” meaning as if things were going so bad you could lose your faith in God.

He bought us a round of beers and left the bar. It wasn't until he left that someone told me who he was. Was very disappointed to not talk to him more.
This was a huge hit when it came out. That was around 1990, and signaled the beginning of alternative rock in the mainstream. R.E.M had been around since the early 80's, but this was a breakthrough.
This was my introduction to REM. I was in grade 9 and it blew my mind.

Think about what it would be like to literally lose your religion-to discover that everything you believed was wrong, that you had to find the strength to carry your truth through all the hurt of feeling like you failed, wasted your time, made a terrible mistake. Now apply that to a relationship: your doubt and insecurity overcome you, you question your beliefs and actions, but you can’t unlearn your truth.
'Losing My Religion' is an expression meaning to lose your temper. This song is about having a crush on someone and not telling them, not about an existing relationship - and then being at a party while they're with someone else and you're in the corner losing your temper. The singer is gay, and so probably didn't get to tell his teen crushes, and also had to watch them with girls at parties. It's nothing to do with religion/belief.
it was thought that the bands name came from the acronym R.E.M meaning comes from the dream stage of sleep known as Rapid Eye Movement however the band says it doesn't but I still question that as their songs tend to be dreamy lol

So fun fact. My middle/high school librarian has one of the original REM drum kits because she was friends with the band in college and they were going to toss and she wanted to learn drums.

this was the theme song on the original 90210 with the love triangle between Brenda, Dylan and Kelley. They would play it all the time.
