Hi Miss Katie, As a recently retired trucker of 25 years, I need to tell you that most of those truck stops you sleep in are not really that safe, there's prostitution, even if you don't see the girls out there, and %99 of those girls are not out there by choice. Human trafficking is everywhere, especially in truckstops and rest areas. It is better in a TS rather than a vacant starbucks lot because of the lights and traffic, but just make sure to stay in the auto areas of the lots and away from the trucks. The truck drivers on the roads nowadays are not the Knights of the highways like they used to be... The guy telling you to move,,, He's just a jerk is all, that's just him. Those Pilot, Flying J, and TA truckstops only have 1 or 2 people working late night and they have to do everything by themselves, so they don't care about no two hrs they just want to get their work done.. I admire your living in your car by choice, it shows courage, and the benefit of it is freedom... Just be wary of everyone and be careful. The Lord Bless you...

People like her are not afraid of danger, it's an adrenaline rush. I am curious to know how you know that 99% of those girls are not out there by choice. Did you interview 99% of the girls? Prostitutes get their courage from alcohol and stimulants, that is a fact. Pimps only manage girls who are already drug addicts and addicts steal; lie; and prostitute themselves to support their daily habit. This is also a fact. I applaud that you are one of many truckers who do not invest in prostitution, however I recommend that you research your assumption a little further than the politically correct understanding you have. I have been a social worker for about the same amount of time you were a trucker and I am aware of the difference between the public persona and the private persona we all possess. All of us have secrets we don't admit publicly. I recommend that you research the definition of narcissist, this will give you insight and help you analyze what you read and hear. Con artists come in every flavor including mine and yours.

Living in a car is not a lifestyle. Dont romanticize it. Living in a car or van or at slab city would suck. Some of these that are forced into living in cars are talented videographers and paint a exciting and romantic picture of being nomads but for most people this would suck. I used to drive a truck for a living, and I tried to avoid staying at truck stops when I could. I really preferred rest stops over truck stops. The reason for this is because there's a lot of criminal activity at truck stops. Drugs, prostitution, human trafficking, people getting robbed... They really aren't that safe. As a woman who has also spent a lot of time traveling alone on the road, I urge you to reconsider staying at truck stops overnight. Since you're in a car, rather than a big rig, you have many other options like hospitals, 24 hour gyms, hotel parking lots, and casinos. Anyway, stay safe.

    • @kathleennorton7913

Do hospitals really let you sleep in their parking lots?
I've been going a ways to visit a friend in ICU. I can't afford to sleep in hotels so I sleep in my car. I didn't think a hospital would allow sleeping in their lot. That seems quite safe.

Careful choosing of motel parking lots off the interstate that runs through and knowing the area I've been careful, especially in rotating and not staying in the same place more than a night in a row. Church parking lots here in the South I would have a hard time feeling like a cop wouldn't be knocking on a window at any time, I see many suggest they are legal, the nosiness factor surrounding churches here is very high. Secrecy and safety are my main thoughts, I'm always looking for more.

On private property it has to do with liability. If they let you stay and you, say, get hurt they can be responsible. It's sad, but we are such a sue-happy culture. I don't understand why you're not allowed to sleep in your car on a public street where you're parked legally. There is a couple that lives in a van that they often park across the street from me. I live right in the downtown area of Seattle and you have to move your car every 3 days (every car)...so I say they are my sometimes neighbors. They have a sweet set up and have good jobs and nice bikes...they just live in their van. I don't know if it's a choice or if circumstances dictated it...doesn't matter. Some people don't want people to be able to live in their car and I don't understand what harm it's doing.

I'm not super knowledgeable on the laws of this, but I'm fairly certain business owners do not like people sleeping in their parking lot because more often than not they are liable for any injuries you sustain while on their property (parking lot). And since sleeping in your car in an unlit parking lot that is not monitored can be dangerous, they're just making a preemptive strike to cover their butts.

Look up the definition for truckstop truck stops have been around for decades truck stops are for truckers and anyone who needs a place to sleep or a restaurant to go into at 3:00 a.m. OK And truck stops are always synonymous for people resting and taking a few hours sleep at night time especially those on the road so the fact that this employee Or suppose it employee kicked her off the property is stupid it doesn't matter if they had a 2 hour parking area only the fact is it's a truck stop which implies in and being that it is an all night place 24 hours implies Hey we're a truck stop if you're tired lay down take a rest in your vehicle sleep in your vehicle and you know I would be questioning the guy that came to the door of my car whether or not he was actually an employee or just someone that randomly trying to get people leave

My Business Model Idea for $10/night:
    1) You pull into a numbered spot that has an HVAC window attachment similar to a modern truck stop. It attaches securely to a window and blows in warmed or cooled air based on your setting.
    2) For another $5 you are allowed to use the bathroom & shower facilities.
    3) The "rest stop" is fenced and patrolled 24/7 by a security guard.
    4) Have some *to-the-point* name like *"Driver's Down Time"*
    5) Have a 3-night maximum length of stay so it's not a place for squatters.
    6) It's merely the cheapest way for people to travel.

you'd need a few up-sell/cross-sell revenue models for supplemental income, not sure this model would even sustain buying a parking lot and paying said security guard, at least some vending machines with expensive over-priced stuff that might be in high demand at a specific time where it's not available especially if you find a location that is in the middle of nowhere it would help a lot, such as food, toothpaste, shower items, underwear, towels.

I have slept in my car overnight on a semi-regular basis, & I am a truck driver, so I have slept in trucks as well. Just some food for thought-actively allowing people to stay overnight can not only increase congestion in their parking lots(word of a permissive store will spread quickly), but also lead to "lot lizards" using their cars as brothels. It also exposes the truck stop to liability if someone is robbed/harmed while sleeping there, in addition to the bad publicity generated when those incidents happen. Often, as long as you don't have a vehicle that stands out, the managers won't notice, or care enough to make an effort to remove you. If you politely leave, returning at a later date is usually not a problem.

This comment section is so sad. In many places it is illegal to sleep in your car and to dumpster dive. So what are homeless people left with? It is a matter of caring about fellow humans. Yes, the parking lot could become a homeless camp, but at the same time, if everyone had a little more empathy and treated others as they would want to be treated, they would not kick people out or send a homeless person to jail or fine them for searching a garbage can for food. At the end of the day we are all humans on a ball. Just because it's culturally unacceptable, doesn't mean it is wrong. It just means it is hard for people to understand.

probably because you didn't research or know anything about homelessness. for example, around 44% of homeless people HAVE JOBS. Veterans make up around 11.3% of the homeless population. For women, the leading cause of homelessness is domestic violence. But go ahead and tell the single mother w/children and no one to watch them while she works(childcare costs around $300 a week at a regular facility per child) who just left her husband who was beating them to "get a job". 20-25% of homeless people have a severe mental illness as well, which highly affects their ability to get a job and keep a job. Put yourself in their shoes. Understand the true problem is not always their willingness to work, but rather their capability of working, or even the fact they are working.

    • @nickc3856
      @nickc3856 6 лет назад +3

FALSE, you ignorant dullard. That incorrect 44% claim comes from a statistic from 1996 by a Washington homeless advocacy group called the National Coalition Against Homelessness, and it was debunked years ago. Per the Bureau of Labor Statistics the amount of homeless with regular employment as 0f the most recent data collected (2015) is estimated to be between 9-14%. I'm not surprised you went with a fake number considering you aren't educated and simply rely on memes from the "occupy democrats" FB page for your stats LMFAO

    • @JulesAskalotl
      @JulesAskalotl 6 лет назад +7

"Josh Leopold, a researcher at the Urban Institute, estimated that about 25 percent of the homeless population is employed, while Megan Hustings, director of the National Coalition for the Homeless, told Axios that between 40 and 60 percent of the homeless population floats in and out of full-time and part-time work." That's not full time regular employment, it's just employment. The bureau of labor stats also doesn't have an efficient way of collecting data on the homeless if you research how they go about collecting their data on their page, you will see there are some major flaws when it comes to homeless population statistics. I also explained why most homeless don't have regular employment. I don't see how you assume I am a democrat for having empathy and understanding when it comes to homelessness. As for Babe, I never said they shouldn't have to pay to park. I just mentioned how it really is sad that we live in a world where you can't live off the land- it's literally illegal to go off the grid almost everywhere in the USA. There are so many ways that the laws target the homeless. I also said it is sad we live in a world where we don't have much empathy for homeless people. In many situations where something isn't hurting anyone, such as someone parking in a walmart parking lot, pulling food out of the trash, etc, our society doesn't show very much empathy. It's also fun to note that walmart punches holes in their clothes and throws them away. They punch the holes so poor people can't wear their clothes even if dug out of the trash, and they dont donate them. That's the evil I am talking about. A lack of empathy in place of greed.

If it is a smaller/indie stop, I will casually let the attendant know how long I'm going to sleep there. As a truck driver, I sleep in truck stops as a matter of course. I see people sleeping in their cars quite often. I don't have a problem with it as long as you're in a car spot and not taking up a truck stall. I've spoken offhandedly with a couple of truck stop managers and for the most part they're ok with it as long as they don't get the impression you're hooking or dealing. In a financial sense, you're probably gonna wake up in the morning and buy breakfast or at least a coffee, fuel your car, maybe take a shower, so they're happy to take your money for a few hours parking in an unused spot.

We have people who park along our street and will stay here for weeks, defecating outside of their vehicles on our sidewalks and grass areas, leaving trash including needles. I think it's truly about respect. I wouldn't mind if they were clean about it.

I was going to say something along the lines of taxes too. I honestly think that they just don't want anyone living outside the bounds of "normal" society. They see it as just gaming the system, because they can basically hold people hostage with mortgages and rent and bills, and you've found a way around that (to an extent). Shame on you! Haha but I really believe that's why, because otherwise who cares? You're literally not hurting anyone. Imagine how our wild distant ancestors would feel about someone telling them where and how they're allowed to live. They would be horrified. Our society is bonkers.

Think about who "they" is. It's not a group of people that indescrminately don't like homeless people. You can't group every cop, business man, gas station owner, or neighbor into one category. Each is looking out for the well- being of property intrusted to their care. They don't want insurance problems or the cleanup that a lot of people cause.

Well I work at a truck stop. I always have to remind people that our lot is not a public rest stop. It’s for customers. We don’t have signs saying you can’t sleep over because we don’t need them. Just as any other business. My first question to them is, why didn’t you just ask? Because you got away with it 20 times before right? Would have avoided it if you just asked. There would have been zero surprises. Should have just stayed at a star bucks lol. Why is it people think it’s okay because it’s a truck stop that they believe they can use the property at will? Dead ass serious question. Is it because of rest stops that are state owned? Even they often say no overnight parking. Why not just let them stay?

Joe Kyser I don't know what's the difference?

    • @JoeKyser
      @JoeKyser 6 лет назад +8

matemahe trucks stops are privately owned. If they allowed opem traffic and parking in their lots then anyone and everyone would stop and use it. That hinders those looking to be a customer. Most rest stops are on state property (actually on the highway) with businesses leased out. Maybe a state troopers barrack on site. Typically they have a ton of parking and open to use because its already paid for by tax payers. At private truck stops they are typically limited parking. Very expensive realestate (prime property of the highway) they require a lot of money to flow through it to pay the bills so they want only customers coming through and using their lot. If she had come to our truck stop, filled her tank and asked to stay. She would have been told stay as long as you want. Actually if she bought all her fuel at my truck stop she bought a permanent place she can always be. We have a few guys who get a free place to keep their truck at. one thing that we can't do absolutely cannot do is take money for parking. our insurance doesn't allow us to do that. if we were to charge specifically for parking then we would have to put up all sorts of signs get better coordinated and actually make a little sub business out of it so it's a lot easier for us to just say there's no parking unless you're a customer. Would I have kicked her out? No i would not have but i only work part time, i can see other associates acting exactly how ahe described. To the T lol. public property is public property and private property is private. If tax payera pay for it you can bet it's public.

  • @mopar_dude9227

The reason is because it is private property. Taxes do not cover private property, so you can’t say you have a right to stay overnight at a truck stop. The reason that truckers get to stay overnight is they spend an incredible amount of money on fuel, same goes for RV drivers. Most businesses do not want their parking lots to become a place for homeless people to camp out. Sorry if that sounds cruel, but I does affect business when that happens. Just because you choose to live in your car, doesn’t mean anyone has to allow you to park on their property overnight.

Criminals sometimes wait in their cars looking for victims, so store owners do not want people hanging around the property. In 2003, I had my purse cut off me in broad daylight by a young man who had been sitting on a toy horse in front of a large grocery store. According to the news, criminals also drive their cars up beside shoppers putting their kids and/or groceries in their cars and rob the shoppers at gunpoint. Three days ago a young man held a gun to the head of a two-year-old child and robbed the mother while she was trying to unlock her apartment door in Texarkana, twenty miles from where we live. Sometimes criminals car jack the shoppers and/or kidnap them. I was actually kidnapped at gunpoint in 1974. Criminals are the reason why they do not want strange people in cars sleeping on their parking lots.

That's one of the reasons-a very good reason--but not the only one. If there's no rules--word gets out that you can stay there as long as you wish. The place then turns into a "motel on
wheels". Truckers need to get in, get fuel/food, and get back on the road. Families on vacation need to stop there also..

As indicated, truck stops are mainly for men and women who need a comfortable place to rest, eat, take a shower, and wash there clothes. By law, truck drivers who are driving long hauls have to obey the down time. Six to eight hours of driving, and eight to ten hours of down time. During the down time, they must rest. You are not a truck driver, therefore; you are taking up a spot that is recommended for truck drivers. The business would not mind if you eat at there restaurant, but as far as sleeping in there area where they are allowed to rest eight to ten hours that is sort of stretching it quite thin. The truck drivers have the right to get mad at you for taking up there spot.

I've lived in my car on and off for three years because I prefer it. I just discovered your channel, and it's so refreshing to hear someone who feels the same way as me. I relate to you more than any other youtubers who do this sort of thing. People think it's crazy or wrong that I do this, and it has gotten to me sometimes, which led me to stay at people's houses when they insisted, which I nearly always regretted. I've finally accepted myself and what I prefer, and this helps me do so even more. Thanks for sharing Katie!
Oh by the way, I've never been kicked out of anywhere. I do the same thing as you and mostly stay at rest areas or truck stops and bounce around. On rare occasion, I've stayed at walmarts and in neighborhoods if I absolutely needed to and felt comfortable doing so. I drive Uber for a living, so I can be anywhere in my state, although I have also bounced around the whole country while driving Lyft. Cops did knock on my window one time at a rest area in Pennsylvania, but it was because I stayed there longer than normal into afternoon hours, and they just wanted to make sure I was alive. They were surprisingly kind and said I can stay there as long as I need to. I have dealt with much harsh judgement, however. Some people really have a tendency to assume the worst about people who live in their car. They consider me homeless, but I sure don't consider myself homeless. The worst experience happened this morning when I was doing my daily morning ruitine at a truck stop I've stayed at plenty of times. I was in the bathroom, spraying my pits with mineral salt deodorant in one of the stalls while my shirt was off. I let them dry before I put my shirt back on, while using the bathroom, and just as I sat down, they told me to step out because they thought I was doing drugs. I told them I had my shirt off because I was waiting for my pits to dry a little more and that I really had to pee, and they said they were going to call the cops if I wasn't out in five minutes. I told them that the stress was making it harder to relax to pee and that they could call the cops because I was innocent, but I ultimately decided to pee somewhere else. When one of the employees (who had talked with me before) found out it was me, she felt really bad and asked if she could make it up to me. I told her it was fine because I understood. It still made be ball my eyes out when I got back to my car. It was so stressful.
I'm thankful for every experience, however. I have a close relationship with God, and I know I'm doing what's best for me and facing the challenges I'm meant to face. Nothing has made me grow more than this lifestyle because I'm staying true to my heart.
"The will of God will never lead you where the the faith of God cannot protect you."

The whole being illegal to sleep in ur car is unconstitutional. There is no crime if there is no injured party.
But not many are willing to stand on that simple fact. The public roads belong to the people at large, you have the right to use them and your car is private property which means the castle doctrine applies to it and you if you choose to stand on it.
A parking lot belongs to whatever corporation owns or leases that location at the time. So yeah, you would have to move. But a fine/ticket for being there can be dealt with by facing ur accuser and having them prove you injured or damaged them. Which becomes their burden.
Enforce the Constitution and choose trial by jury while making sure the jury is aware of constitutional principals and if they're unfamiliar. Have them removed so that a more competent jury sits in their place.
I respect your desire to create and follow your own goals instead of excepting pressure to do what others think is best for your life.
My comment is nothing more than shared information not legal advice, so consider me a "next of friend". :)

So this is how I see it. You are getting to stay somewhere rent free. That someone has to pay for. Be it in rent, lease, or just taxes. Therefore it comes down to owners choices. If they want you there fine. If not that is fine as well. Someone crashing in my parking lot. Can't really get pissed or question me as to why. When I ask them to move. What you should do is ask for the manager or owner of the place. Then ask them what the stance is own sleeping in the parking lot. You could ask if they have a program or have thought of starting a program. Where people like yourself can sleep in the parking lots for a small fee. If its a truck stop they have showers so that could be part of the fee.

  • @JohnHoulgate
    @JohnHoulgate 6 лет назад +10

Learn the difference between rights and permissions. Parking lots are someone's property, even public property (owned by 'the people,' but subject to the rules agreed on by 'the people' and delegated to appointed officers to enforce.) Therefore you have no right to park in any lot, only by someone else's permission and that permission can be rescinded at any time for any or no reason. The property owner doesn't have to explain why you are asked to leave.
That said there are a number of reasons why a lot owner would ask you to leave. The one that makes the most sense to me is that if it is a truck stop, the lot was intended to give truckers and mobile homers a place to stay the night. Truckers need lots of space for their rigs. They travel long distances hauling products that lots of people need. They serve a very important function in our economy. So if people like you, who make it a lifestyle choice to live out of your car, want to stop at these places and spend the night, that sends a message to other people that it's okay to do that. So, if more car-dwelling people took up space at these truck stops, then eventually it could reduce the amount of space for truckers. Multiply that by the number of truck stops out there and we have a problem that affects our entire economy.
It's the old adage, 'If I let you stay here then I have to let all the others stay here.'
One solution would be to set up a network of people willing to share their driveways for people who live out of their cars. They can charge a small fee, maybe in cryptos and let you stay. Another is for lot operators to reserve some space for car dwellers for a small fee, maybe eventually leading to what truckers have, except the space and onsite services cater to the needs of car dwellers.

As a Trucker, those truck stops there because we need them, for short stops(12 hours or less) as is the law.
If I stay at a rest stop 2-3 days in a row I will be kicked out.
Don't forget if they let you stay there, they have to let everyone. That is a potential crime risk. And it should go without saying that a young pretty girl staying at a truck stop to everyone there they must be thinking a lot lizard.
Truck stops were designed to give me a place to stop when the Department of Transportation tells me I'm over my hours and I must take a break, many companies have been smart enough to make them very enjoyable places well-lit and inviting, but they are not meant to be used as a semi-permanent home
And ask for the government requiring you to actually have a physical address, and not just allowing you to maintain a post office box that makes no sense. Don't forget you may have a car with Windows and a back door, I've got a large rig with a double sleeper. They will not allow me to consider that to be my home even though I have two twin beds or television set refrigerator microwave and all the amenities, I still have to maintain a crappy apartment with doesn't have half that stuff.

Maybe they just hadn't notice you before.. also the area where you were parked, was it for car parking, or were you in parking spaces intended for trks, maybe bobtails normally parked there, because you can prk almost anywhere, anytime, and trk drivers are running on federally mandated driving schedules and they HAVE to have those parking spaces to get rest so they can do their jobs safely.
They're already short on parking spaces even counting r4est areas, for their legally required 10 hr breaks. They only have so many places big enough for them to park in, .. ergo the purpose of trk stops.. to the point that now a days, there are programs run by some trk stops where a driver can call ahead and reserve a spot if he/she knows they will be there, to make sure they have parking available for the night.
So they may have told you to leave for that purpose, because the smaller spaces are used by bobtail trks, in order to leave the full size ones for trks with trailers.
On top of the reasons listed, I hate to say it, but if that guard had not noticed you all before, he may have thought you were lot lizards, which are a big problem in trk stops. Unlike what people think, most drivers are not on drugs, and 99/100 drivers do not want some woman knocking on their door waking them up from a sound sleep, asking them if they want a "date"! So especially if he was a new guard he might not have saw you before and new what was up. As for explaining, you would not BELIEVE some of the excuses they give! I always love the looks on their faces when I get up instead of my husband, roll the window down and holler back into the sleeper. "Babe, it's for you!" and go back to the sleeper! LoL
I Finally started tossing my red lace bra over the steering wheel and dash area so they knew this trk was already occupied by a female.
Anyway, just giving you some possible reasons why the guard was obviously clearing out all the traffic that wasn't in and out customers or trks parked for their 10 hr breaks..

I’m not an expert in this particular area of law but I am a sociology PhD student and one of my areas of expertise is law and society. My educated guess is that laws about living in your car are similar to vagrancy laws, many of which were created and continue to exist to criminalize people of color, poor people, and the mentally ill. We don’t like to admit that we want to punish people who don’t align with what society expects from us, but that’s essentially what happens.

It's not illegal to live in your car. Where you park is what the issue is. In some areas there is a homeless problem and you can imagine the encampments that would pop up on residential streets if cities didn't have certain ordinances restricting this. I worked at Home Depot for some years and we always had sleepers pull in for a night or 2 and that went pretty much unnoticed. But when 4 or 5 motor homes pull in with boat trailers loaded with junk covered with tarps and extra vehicles and they start making a certain section of the lot look like there camp ground ,,,they would force them out. You would also start having vehicles broken into and the bathrooms in the store would be filled in the am with people bathing in the sink etc. soap dispensers torn off the wall so they could get enough to do the cloths in the sink. Get the picture ? It's not the many struggling in their life that are a problem. We all understand this and wish there were answers to all the problems. It is the few that trash everything that ruin it for the innocent. AND there are those people out there that are intolerant of anything that doesn't meet their standards. ***butt heads****

The sad part is the ignorance and lack of education as to what is under the jurisdiction of cops and people that work for the cities, counties, States and United States.
The Constitution for the United States clearly states in Article I section 8 clause 17,
"To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases
whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding
ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular
States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become
the Seat of the Government of the United
States, and to exercise like Authority over all
Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature
of the State in which the Same shall be, for
the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals,
dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings;- and:"
Article IV section 3 clause 2, that
"The Congress shall have Power to dispose of
and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting
the Territory or other Property belonging
      to the United States;..."
That means they can only make rules, regs, statutes, codes, public policies on "Territory or other property owned by the United States"
That does not include any of the land that is privately owned, or on public easements.
The State of California's legislators are totally aware of these sections and even mention Article I section 8 clause 17 in their code 126(b)
According to their codes @ 110-127 in their government codes Labeled "Territorial Jurisdiction" if one is on land within the exterior boundaries of California, and the land that you are on is not on the lists of 111-127 then one is not in the "State of California.
I understand that what I just wrote will be very confusing for most of the people that went to indoctrination centers(euphemistically called the public school(fool) system.
But all one needs to do is actually read the codes.
And learn how to read their terms as they have defined them.
The way they define their terms are mostly different than the colloquial way you read the definitions as they are diction in a dictionary.

my CBD life I get frustrated when people get judged for saving money getting rid of things they don't need or want to do what they ultimately want to do. Why isn't the tons of unhappy average 9-5 worker who has many physical and mental health problems seen as a problem? So many people view luxury as more important than health even if they don't realize it.
I'm happy that you all are living the life that adds value to your lives. I hope to one day travel and start a family and do likewise.

The reason is bc most homeless people are seen as potentially dangerous to the public, or at the least a nuisance. Its a fear and safety issue, not for you, for people who may need to stop there for gas or whatever. The sad fact is most people are homeless due to mental health and or addiction issues. Plus, (im a social worker, i deal with this all the time) they tend to act like the world owes them something bc of the predicament theyre in when its usually their own doing theyre in that predicament. Yes there are the few who are temporarily down on their luck, but thats not the norm. The majority are homeless by choice or by mistakes they made.

Her number one tip is to just stay in cooler places in the summer and warmer places in the winter. Since she doesn't have to be any specific place, it makes sense for her to just go where she'll be most comfortable. But she also has a 20 degree sleeping bag and a portable fan I think.
