  • Harlan Estate was started in 1984 by Bill Harlan, who wanted to create a first growth of California wine. His vineyard site is ideal: in the western hills of Oakville right above Martha's Vineyard and To Kalon. The vineyard is 240 acres of which 40 acres is planted with vines.
    Harlan Estate's first commercial vintage was the 1990, which was released in 1996. The first vintage of The Maiden was the 1995 vintage. The vineyard composition is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wine spends around 24 to 26 months in a mix of new and used French oak barrels. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered at the estate. About 2000 cases of Harlan and 1000 cases of The Maiden are produced each year.
    In April of 2021, Bill's son Will Harlan was appointed CEO of Harlan.

    Thank you for opening this young wine so that you could review it for us. I think you would have enjoyed this wine much more with 15-20 years of age on the bottle. The wine would have been in more harmony with more rounded tannins and a bit less fruit. Hope you feel better. Cheers🍷

      Cory: yes I agree but I do think it is important to drink these wines young so that you know what it should taste like young (that is when you buy the wine). Yes, you are correct...I am hoping that if I open the wine, I give people who are holding the wine some idea of its progression. Cheers!

    Maiden is fantastic. If you haven't hard Harlan Estate proper, it's absurdly priced but also incredible.

      I have had it and agree...it is amazing but pretty expensive! That is why I like Maiden. Cheers!

    When you say that a lot of wines over oak, I could not agree with you more. I hear so much about certain wines and how great they are and when I try them all I can taste is the oak. It seems like this oak forward profile is a fad that is becoming increasingly popular.

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  7 месяцев назад

      doublewides: I am not sure it is actually that they want to over oak...it is just the fruit profile is not high enough so the oak and alcohol just naturally stand out. The problem is that so many Napa wines are like this, everyone thinks that is what Napa wines are supposed to taste like, which is incorrect. That is why it is so important to taste wines like the Maiden. If people get used to over oak wines, they will think there is actually a problem with the Maiden as the oak doesn't jump out at you. Cheers!

      @@TrophyWineHunter very interesting insight that I had not considered…. that the fruit profile is what is lacking. That said, I agree with you that it makes it that much more important to know which wines are really representative of the region and to try those so that you understand what the region is capable of.

    I try to tell people in our wine club that the price of the wine ultimately has very little effect on the taste/quality of the wine when go over a certain threshold. What effects the wine are the terroir, vineyard practices, vinification etc. We drink trophy wines because they are an evolving snapshot of history from a certain place and from a certain group of people making the wine.

    I’ve just purchased a bottle of 2001 Harlan Estate through auction. Please tell me it’s a good investment 😅

      calthang: thank you for viewing my video. Depends on what you call an investment and how much you paid for it. If you are thinking of reselling, probably all the lift is already done after all these year. In terms of drinking, I think you have a tremendous wine that will drink well now but could go at least another 10 years easily. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

    How different you think between The Maiden & The Harlan Estate ?

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  7 месяцев назад

      Gary: thank you for viewing my video and your question. In my mind, pretty different. Harlan is quite a bit more intense and would not be, in my mind, drinkable now without some heavy food. But for the price difference, I prefer to by the Maiden, which to me is already an exceptional wine. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

    what other napa valley wines would you consider first growth, maybe scarecrow or screaming eagle?

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  7 месяцев назад +1

      catchingwithkyle: I think this is a great topic for a video. Other than Screaming Eagle, I would have to do more research on auction prices but not many others are going to be in that league. Cheers!

    hey trophy, ive picked up a bottle of durfort vivens 2020, what are your thoughts on the winery? seems like cellartracker loves it but curious on your thoughts since you have really good insight into wines and bordeaux. Cheers! P.S., would it be cursed to open in the next year or two or should i really put this away somewhere safe for 5+ years.

      jcbd9415: thank you for viewing my video and your question. I will be honest..haven't tried this wine for awhile and 10 years ago, their wines were pretty ordinary. But I know the quality has improved across the board in Margaux.
      Yes, I would hold on to this wine....leave it to people like me to taste 2020 young and see how they are doing. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!
