Hi, I'm Dr Shawna D’dharan and an associate dentist of Elite Dental Group.
Today we're going to talk about how a tooth crown gets fitted. Now, coming in for a crowning procedure, you would have to make at least two visits to your dentist.
The first visit, your dentist will trim the tooth slightly and take an impression or a mold which will be sent to a lab to make your brand new custom fitting crown.
On the second visit is when the crown gets fitted. Now on that visit you will get some anesthesia on the tooth, even though your tooth maybe root canal treated, because we also want to anesthetize or make the gums around the teeth numb.
Your dentist will remove the temporary crown that's on the tooth, clean it up to remove any excess cement and then they will try in your new crown. Once the crown is tried in, we will check for a couple of things:
1. does the crown fit well?
2. are the margins fitting properly?
3. is the bite proper?
4. is the color of the tooth matching your natural teeth color?
Sometimes we may even take an x-ray to check whether the crown is properly sitting on the tooth. Once we are happy with the fit and the color of the crown, we will remove it and clean the crown.
Sometimes the internal surface of the crown gets chemically treated as well, then we will move on to your tooth. We will make sure the tooth is properly cleaned and ready, to get the new crown cemented on it.
It is also very very important then that tooth remains dry. Sometimes your dentist may even put a rubber dam on to just prevent any saliva or any moisture contamination from getting onto the tooth.
Finally it's the most awaited time, your crown gets cemented onto your tooth and your dentist will be cleaning up all the excess cement around your crown, which sometimes does get under the gums.
Finally we will take one last x-ray to check that all the cement has been cleared off and you will be going home happy with a big smile because you have a new crown.

What Are Dental Crowns?

How much more does it cost to have a tooth pulled that has a crown? I heard sometimes they have to cut the crown off. My sister told me she had an infection under the crown and they charged her $1,700 to pull the crown off, clean it up and put it back on. I'm beginning to think it's better just to have the tooth pulled in the first place.

Can you please make a video on the different kinds of crowns and what are the benefits. I got a zirconia crown and they can't see through it with an x-ray. They make IMAX crowns that are little more expensive but you can see through them on an X-ray to tell if you got a problem and I'm wondering if I can get my crowns changed. My dentist already took an impression so if they change a crown will they have to take a new impression? Or just mill out a new crown with the impression they took last year?
