Hi, I'm Dr Shawna D’dharan and an associate dentist of Elite Dental Group.
Today I'll be answering a question on "why my crown is hurting". The painful tooth which has just been crowned might be hurting due to one of two reasons.
Either something called Pulpitis, which is the inflammation of the nerves inside your tooth or due to a heavy bite.
Teeth that have been indicated for a crown have usually undergone multiple rounds of dental treatment, may have really large fillings or sometimes even cracks in them.
Now all these may cause the pulp in the tooth to get irritated. An irritated pulp can sometimes get inflamed over time and that is one of the reasons why your crown tooth may be hurting.
If the tooth is trimmed too much or sometimes your tooth has been worn so severely after long periods of time, and the nerves are very very close to the top of the tooth, then those get irritated as well, and some that may cause Pulpitis.
In old crowns, the margins of the crown is not fitting well onto the tooth, it has open and leaky margins, bacteria can go under and irritate the nerves in the tooth as well and this can be made worse by decay that happens on the tooth under the crown.
These open and leaky margins will cause sensitivity and sometimes ultimately dislodge the crown. It is important that poorly fitting crowns or tooth that have been undermined by decay, the crown should be replaced to prevent further loss of teeth.
After fitting a new crown you may find that your bite feels a little bit heavier on one side compared to the other side, and this can cause some tenderness around the tooth when you're biting or even some sensitivity to cold.
In these instances your dentist will call you back in for a quick bite adjustment, just make sure that your bite is level and it feels normal again. Based on why the tooth is hurting, your dentist will be able to advise on which treatment would be best to solve your problem.

    What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is cemented onto existing teeth or implants. Crowns can be used to strengthen and protect a damaged or cracked tooth, and/or after a tooth has had root canal treatment done, and/or improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function.
When do you need a dental crown?
To protect a weak, cracked or damaged tooth from further breakage
To restore a severely worn or cracked tooth
To reinforce a tooth with a large filling
To reinforce a tooth that has had root canal treatment
To cover poorly shaped or severely discolored teeth
To hold a dental bridge in place
    To cover a dental implant
What are dental crowns made of?
The most popular type of dental crown in the market today is Zirconia. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, other types of porcelain (lithium disilicate) or resin-ceramic hybrids. Porcelain can also be combined with zirconia or metal bases.

I got 5 crowns about a month ago. Ive been taking motrin basically around the clock because of extreme pain on molar area where I got the crowns. They knew I had lots of sensitivity before they put the permanent crowns on and still did it. I thought it would go away after a week or so. Went back to get bit adjusted and thought it would sove the issue. Still the same. Any advice? This has been a nightmare.

I had my crown removed because it hurt so bad! It was just maddening and life was unbearable with the pain. Hopefully yours will get better but unfortunately I went to an idiot who shaved my tooth down too much and the crown was absolutely horrid! He ruined almost all of my molars and I’m having to now go through the very expensive process of re-doing all my back teeth. Hope your teeth feel better.

@@ScrapBaby83 How do they fix the tooth that was shaved too much? Do they add composite bonding to it to bulk it up?

    • @GospelOfTimothy
      @GospelOfTimothy Год назад +3

@@smokescreen2146sometimes they can drill into the root and add a pin then attach the crown to the Pin. Even that the tooth is level to the gums.

Omg im having pain there as well. Literally feels like a tiny hole causing the pain cause it's trimmed too much. They told me there's no way because my root canal would've killed the nerves. So they tell me its the tooth behind it causing the pain so im going in a couple days to get the root canal done, but i don't even think thats the cause of my pain. The crown itself hurts

Are things better now? I’m in the same spot. Tooth where a crown was put has been hurting for months.

@zach4627 yea it went away eventually. I think it's just tooth sensitivity tbh. I've recently been using this foam Mouthwash and it seems to be helping. The Brand is called "EverSmile" and it's called Omnifoam Implant Crown & Bridge Cleaner.
