    In an interview Maurice said that they seldom do this live because of its complexity. He went on to say there was 26 layers of Harmony on this particular song. I think the reason it is the favorite of so many is 1 the outstanding Harmony and 2 each of the Gibb Brothers sang the lead/solo on the recording. I haven't seen it mentioned in the other comments so I'll go ahead and mention it now. Fanny was their maid when they had first come to the United States to record. They rented a house and it came with a housekeeper / maid and her name was Fannie. The Story Goes that when she found out that they had this song named after her she actually cried. I think I would have too.

    • @DianaJG8
      @DianaJG8 3 года назад +53

      The maid/housekeeper/cook was actually the lady that came with the place they rented that Eric Clapton also got when he went to Miami to record at Criterion. When they were rehearsing the song, they weren't using an actual name, and Maurice mentioned that they should pick one and the song would have a better flow. That's when they decided on Fannie as a "Thank you" for such great care and meals, and brought her into the studio, and the tears flowed. ❤😊❤

      I think this is another indication that the brothers were just really nice guys and sensitive to people's feelings. (Well they weren't sensitive to reporters feelings. LOL.) She probably had never had such appreciation bestowed on her before or since. I bet she's a fan. If I'm going to have a hard crush on a group I'm glad it's the brothers because they're just nice people. They don't yell at or cuss out the audience like I've seen rather heard other groups do.

      I believe Barry was nine and the twins were six. Barry got a guitar for Christmas. The may have sang together before this, but Barbara (mom) heard them singing later. Such a great story they have. Born to sing, for sure!

    • @bethanyhuber2598
      @bethanyhuber2598 2 года назад +6

      I have heard Barry say in several interviews that they were singing together when he was 6 or 7, the twins 3 or 4. He was writing lyrics when he was 8 and by the time he was 9 and got the guitar, the twins were joining him in creating lyrics and they had figured out harmonies. It’s mind-boggling to me that those three little boys were working together musically at such a young age! Then they stuck with it and had mastered their trademark harmony enough that they were performing professionally when Barry was in his early teens, the twins nine or ten! Think they signed a recording deal while still in Australia! Just incredible!

    This is the quintessential Bee Gees song because it showcases everything that made them great. Great story about this song. Maurice met Quincy Jones and Quincy said that Fanny was one of his favorite R&B songs of all time. He told Maurice that he tried for years to find someone that could cover the song and that the search was futile because he couldn't find anyone to come close to this performance. That says so much.

      @@CoowallskyMo was not a alcoholic in the late 60's early 70's. Try listening to his song "Railroad" from I believe it was 69' or 70'. Also other songs from his unreleased "Loner" album. It was unreleased because he wrote it during the split in 69' - August 1970. When they got back together, all 3 agreed that they would not release their unpublished solo work. So it never got published. Also listen to his songs from "Cucumber Castle" especially his part in the song that Barry and he sang called "The Lord". I was in 9th grade when this came out. This song is raw. It fills my soul. It brings me back to my old bedroom listening to it and belting out the words with them. If you didn't know better you'd think there were 8 people singing this song. I don't know many artists now that have this talent. They all have been or were married for a long time, had children, and produced music for many many others. Yes, they drank and smoked pot... and sadly Andy did his share of cocaine, but they functioned. You rarely heard them curse, they were alway super polite when being interviewed, smiled to their fans.... These guys were one of a kind and I really think this song is on my top 5 songs. So much range and feeling. Okay, I"m done. Thanks for listening.

      I have always loved the Bees Gees older stuff. I have bern listening to them everyday for months now. I have a much deeper appreciation for their songwriting and arrangements. Their lyrics, vocals and instrumentation are phenomenal, setting them above all others. They seem like good guys too. Rest in peace Robin and Maurice (and Andy).

    This video is kind of deceptive though; the camera will be on one, but the lead vocal is actually coming from someone else. I think most of the lead vocal tracks on this one are Barry (tho Robin & Barry sing unison on the chorus, with Mo handling the harmony). Oh, and you’re welcome for the request for this gem. Even tho I was around back then, I am just now discovering the early and later bee gees.

      Robin probably did the high lead falsetto vocal in the key change part of the song (or shared). You can clearly hear Robin do the very same in the first verse of Living Together after the opening chorus (1979), at 1:02, or 2:02 a clearly more feminine voice than Barry's ruclips.net/video/1U9noJETLU0/видео.html

    • @Erizedd
      @Erizedd 3 года назад +4

      Barry is the one doing the two voices actually. You can hear him singing in the same baritone on the 'do you think I'm gonna stand here' lyric of the song, and also in Nights on Broadway and You Should Be Dancing.

    • @susieq9801
      @susieq9801 3 года назад +9

      @@Erizedd - Robin is the one singing in "two voices". He sings "Fanny be tender" in falsetto and then switches to "It's all that I've got" in his baritone. The vocal power in that line is all Robin. I've been a fan of the Bee Gees since 1967 and know their voices. They are quite distinct. When they sang together there are times when the two are indistinguishable. In this song Maurice also switches from baritone to falsetto.

    There Range is unbelievable these 3 brothers were the best of the best, you listen to Barry's falsetto and Robin's baritone along with Maurice playing the bass ladies & gentleman this is no accident there born with this music in them & there voices are just insane, you can hear Barry's falsetto which is insane then Robin & Maurice come in with an up & down baritone they take turns on it, you know how hard that is wow, just amazing absolutely amazing the 3 of them are, plus the bass & Barry's guitar 1 continues Rythum holding it that is what makes these 3 men special, Bee Gees man oh man wow #1 in my book always till i die. Barry lost 2 great brothers. That will be missed for ever R.I.P. MAURICE & ROBIN.

    Thanks for playing one of my favorite songs! Maurice (pronounced Morris) plays bass and Robin's in the middle (they were twins). Isn't this group the very best?! Fanny was a song they almost never played live in concert because of its difficulty (I've read.). They wrote all their own music--incredible writers as well as musicians. I enjoyed your reaction again! Have you seen the Stayin' Alive video yet? Such a great song for these turbulent days. God bless!

      Maurice [pronounced "Morris", nickname: Mo; the youngest BeeGee (born 30 minutes after Robin, his twin)] played many instruments & was the musical genius; he also sang the high harmony, above his brothers; & he was the 'man in the middle' acting as referee between his brothers, both lead singers. Mo was so vital to the group, his tragic & unnecessary death ended the BeeGees. FYI, Mo said this song was 'just a bitch to sing'; it's intricate vocals is why it wasn't performed live.

    They're Brits/Australians, so Maurice is pronounced 'Morris'. Robin is in the middle. The deeper voice is Barry. Robin actually had a higher voice than Barry, but not the fabulous falsetto. If you listen to a real oldie called "I Started a Joke" (which I thoroughly disliked when it was new and so was I) you'll be able to distinguish the voices more easily. Robin has a distinctive sound and accent and sings lead on that one. You'll be able to hear him on pretty much every cut once you've heard that one.

      Actually the three could perform falsettos, some falsetto choruses (including this one) are Barry and Robin together, a wonderful blending. Robin did it solo in "Living Together". Maurice did falsetto mostly in harmonies, but also in some live performances of "Nights on Broadway".

    It is so much fun to watch you react, Chad, to this music. I felt EXACTLY the same way. I can't tell you how much fun my friends and I had dancing to this music. It really was a magical time and we loved every minute of it. It was that way all around the world. The girls went wild. And yet, the best part was that they were so humble. Barry will tell you they were songwriters first before anything else; can you believe that? When they took a break in the early 80s, they wrote music for Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross and others. What a total package. Not even the Beatles could top their all around talent.

    My dad ran WOW-AM in Omaha during this time which they promoted the Bee Gees concerts there.. But more important to me - this song - I was just a small youth then and it was on the PA speakers anytime you went to any nice restaurant, shop, park (lobby area, etc) so when I hear it it brings back all those memories. The best moments in my life.. My dad said of every band that came through Omaha from Elvis to ABBA, The Bee Gees's were the nicest back stage of them all. Their parents were always there too. My dad said in particular Andy Gibb was the most memorable. He was these three packed in one. Nicest guy of all people he's met since 1967 all the way to today.
