    amazing series I love this for all the people that are quite simpletons like me
    the way im seeing it, its kinda like learning theory in music, sure you can get away with pounding on some chords, and eventually find out what boxes to play in for leads and stumble into it, but its not like learning theory and scales WONT make you a better player. and even the people that do it by feel and in some abstract way are actually learning the scales, just in a really inefficient way and eventually youll hit a plateau where you cant get any better

    This is the best explanation of the application of frame data that I’ve found. Other videos explain the concept well, but give the impression that high level Tekken players are savant level mathematicians

    Oh man it took me a bunch of vids to understand the concept of using frame data. As aris mentioned, I only understood it to a level of using frame data to punish opponents. This vid really hit the light bulb switch for me. I've played tekken 3, tag 1, 6, and now 250+ hrs of tekken 7 and I've only began a deeper appreciation for the game. I can finally get out of green ranks, hopefully.
    Compared to more mainstream games like league of legends, fortnite, etc, tekken is just harder to get in to, but when you reach a level of competency, it really feels good
    Anyways, thanks for the vids, really appreciate it. Love from the philippines

    Honestly this video is pretty amazing. Aris does an excellent job at explaining frame data for fighting games in general while still keeping "the conversation" really casual and loose. Which is important in my opinion because a lot of people get intimidated when you start talking numbers

    Really like the rpg stats analogy, gonna use that in the future. Also just wanted to emphasize that frame data is only part of the story. Things like pushback and other random properties can contribute to whether a move is good or not.

    what got me hooked was learning different crazy distance/weight combos and approaches with johnny. I am obsesed with fighting games now. t7, ggxrd2, sfv, kof14, bbcf. I cant stay on one. they all have their merits.

    I think one can understand frame data as a basic concept, i.e. the game's based on frames, and some moves are faster than others, etc. Some players may be familiar with frame data in that sense, but may not know the actual number of frames in each animation. Aris once spoke to FightingGM at a point in his Tekken tenure where he was unfamiliar with frama data, and played based on intuition. I think you can play based on intuition. Maybe frame data might give you a very useful technical advantage, but ultimately isn't necessary, I believe.

    I thought I was the only one who had fun creating situations. The situation that reeled me in was Lars Db4 into WS 2.
    Now it's even better cause NH Db4 is +5 and making WS 2 nearly unavoidable while still being safe enough plus I can make an attempt at juicier pokes like Ff1+2.
    Also the increase in damage potential on CH is nice too.

    Have to agree, however i use frame data differently. I played in arcades in the 1990's and SF2 vanilla era i was in highschool. and in the 2000's. Back in the 1990's we didnt really have concepts of framedata, i'm sure it was out there but the way i learn is usually i eyeball moves and experiment with them and i can get a good idea of how safe or good a move is based on just looking at it and i still play like that, i also learn by getting punished by players to learn limits. With frame data now you can skip over most of the painful trail and error part of learning because it's all outlined in the data for you. If you get blown up by something or punished by something you were not aware of you can goto the frame data and it will all be there for you which is excellent
    I like how he explains the creative aspects of moves since i'm very much someone who uses frame data in the first application he outline, i used it to learn how to punish people.

    i understand it's really important and i always use frame data, but why oh why can't they just include it in the game?? like mortal kombat just add the frame data in the move list, it's really easy. All the stats in dark souls are in the game are they not???

    I am actually getting into this game after being a long term Dark Souls PvP player (looking for something more competitive) and the analogy wth starts and weapons really works for me.     I love it when someone messages me on PSN complaining about me spamming. I always tell them, "You can't spam in TTT2." This video explains why.
    Well, technically you can "spam" by doing a move over and over. However, my point is that spamming does NOT work in Tekken. Those people will never reach the ranks of Bukkake.

    Hello Aris, I M total newbie, and I have to say you are an awesome teacher and like how you explain stuff. I do find this game very hard to learn but I also like a challenge. I am trying to play online but get my ass kicked all the time. I cant even get a hit in with some of these people. Any hints on how to progress?

      Play with ppl your level (that is what I do). Over time you'll learn stuff by mistakes, pure accident (im an artist and thats how I level up the most: accidents). STEEL SHARPENS STEEL: find a discord server and ask for others willing to learn like you. Practice is good but enjoying the game is too.

      No, the CPU plays nothing alike a real person.
      They pretty much use every move in the moveset, they dont know frames so they aren't able to punish or build pressure/mind games.
      They are also able to block all your unseeable lows which a person wouldn't be able to react to.

    I get the concept but with so many characters, and about 150 attacks on each of them, its hell having to analyze attacks like this; it will take forever.
    Also, how do you even know how many frames an attack is? Is it listed ingame, are you actually using a stop clock or browsing the internet for a list?

      data on the net, print it out for your current main; and yes, it takes a long time to learn who can punish what and how, but if youre getting cucked out by electric spams or orbitals or some garbage all the time after 8 months of consistent play youre eventually going to take three minutes to learn the frame data on an electric for Mishimas.

      They need to add a lot of stuff. Tekken 6 had scenario campaign so i wonder if if they made a better one for 7. Damn mode was broken as hell but i still had fun with it.

      It's actually how faster you recover from your move. If it's +2 you recover 2 frames faster from attacking than the dude recovers from blocking.
      The mini stun is block stun, it's important but not exactly what the + is for. It's 2 frames of advantage after all interaction is done. It's the same for any fighting game =)

      Yeah, never really looked at fighting games in a competitive way.
      I just try to master my character as good as possible. And often there are some moves that chain up well and some others that don't.
      e.g I know that most "recommended" 10-hit Combos (the ones on the command list) like Lily or Alisa have very big windows in which they are vulnerable, even if they have hit the first punch. Which is why I think that you could only use those against newbs (worse than me).
      I play fighting games more like. Recognize pattern, block when needed, punch inside the frame when vulnerable then chain up with something.
      But regarding the 2 frames.
      Aren't those nearly impossible to hit?
      I mean at 60fps 2 frames are about 33ms.
      No way I press a button inside that window (or rather not likely I do it purely on purpose).
      So the guy is blocking 2 frames even after you have hit him so inside those you can hit him again.
      But moves need to start as well (and those generally take more than just 2 frames afai can tell). So how is t his possible then?

      The 19th Fighter I didn't see your reply, sorry =\ you don't use that +2 to hit them.
      Taking street fighter as an example (I know the numbers better for it, but it works just the same) Imagine I do a jab and you block it, and that jab hits on the 3rd frame of the animation, and let's say it's +2 on block. You are gonna be stuck blocking for 2 frames longer than it will take it for me to move again, that's what it means, it's 2 frames of advantage.
      So let's say you try your own jab after blocking mine, and Indo the same. Since I started my 3f jab 2 frames before you did, you are gonna get hit out of the startup of yours. Framedata is mostly useful for said situations, to know when you are in a disadvantage or advantage, and in street Fighter for instance all jabs are either 3 or 4 frames so it applies to a number of different scenarios.

    I kind of feel like all fighting games have the necessity to learn frame data, people just hold Tekken to this double standard that dictates its not fun. I find street fighter more complicated because they're flat at okay with unbreakable grabs, spammy projectiles, oh and these charge characters from SF II in SF IV who fly at me bounce off my character blocking just far enough so I can't hit him back. That's my perspective. I feel like Tekken gives me the tools to deal with stuff I find annoying. Oh you're gonna span a three hit string? Bet the last part leaves you vulnerable, or I can side step it, or something.
