Frank wrote every score for every instrament on his recordings. He knew exactly what he wanted everything to sound like, and he would know if you hit a wrong note or were out of tune.
One of the tightest bands ever! They often improvised at the direction of Frank Zappa himself, who would use hand signals and facial expressions to change the tempo, rhythm, sound effects, flavor, etc on the fly. The band responded without flaw!
Zappa was a genius who demanded nothing less than perfection from his musicians and his bands were like a rite of passage for some of the best players in the world. The music was very difficult to play but there is lots of improvisation too
One of his players was sort of bitter that Zappa could make mistakes, but his musicians were "not allowed to make any, or he'd rudicule them". Yet when asked if he'd join the band again, he said "yell heah!"
This is the content I come to RUclips for. Please revisit Zappa again down the road. The Library is MASSIVE and spans so many different styles and moods.
A cool but difficult thing to do is listening to this song while focusing on one key instrument at a time(Guitar, Bass, Drums) each time through will really show how unspeakable the musicians are that he had in his band. Absolutely as good as you can assemble together in terms of pure musicianship. Great video work man. Blessings.
Frank’s bands practiced long hours daily- this explains how the band was so tight even with all the seeming chaos - it was all planned and excellently performed - his bands were incredibly talented and rose to the complexity of Frank’s musical vision.
One thing to remember whenever you're hearing a Zappa guitar solo is that the solo was totally improvised at some point. He recorded almost every show they did. He actually helped pioneer(debatably invented) a recording technique called Xenochrony. Which is basically taking a solo or other musical part from its original context and placing it into different recording. Many of Zappa's solos including the beautiful solo on the song 'Inca Roads' was taken from one performance and placed into another performance of the song.
Actually no, that's just a normal editing decision. "Xenochrony" means cut-and-pasting a solo from one song onto the backing track of another song, to create harmonic/rhythmic clashes. The Joe's Garage album is full of that,
@@Grithron2 So... He didn't cut, edit and paste the solo from one performance of Inca Roads and paste it into another performance of Inca Roads? It's the same thing minus creating a 'new' piece of music.
On the '79 tour Zappa had a 4-track recorder that was used to record only his solos, no backing, just solos. Those solos were added to studio recorded backing tracks on Joe's Garage. The solo with its full backing track in Inca Roads as recorded in Helsinki in '74 was edited into a different performance of Inca Roads. There was nothing pasted onto something. On Rubber Shirt (on the Sheik Yerbouti album) a bass guitar performance (somewhat improvised) was pasted onto an unrelated drum performancee (not sure what the origin of that drum part was an unreleased song? a studio jam?). That's xenochrony.

I always loved when I knew Zappa album showed up at the record store. I always knew I would be getting more bang for my buck musically speaking. I might be getting western music mixed with reggae and some jazz but I didn't care. I always felt like I was getting more that I did from other bands annual releases. Frank was releasing 2 and 3 albums a year. Frank referred to his music as : "Difficult listening music"
I've been listening to Frank for 40+ years. He is brilliant. The invention of quality ear phones makes this Incredible and that of all music. Damn. Dude you need to do Apostrophe don't eat that yellow son.
This song is apparently about the early-to-mid 1973 touring band - everyone in the band (even George Duke) was, at the time at least, a shy-and-retiring wrapped-up-in-books type, and therefore Frank found them the most boring travelling-companions he'd ever had. If you think this solo is long, Frank had an occasional tendency, from the start, to play solos onstage that were in the 9-12 minute range. The longest solos he ever played are a handful from the mid-to-late '70s that hit the 15 minute mark (for some reason most of them were in Black Napkins, though one well-known instance is from a Duprees Paradise in 1974).
So cool to see the Zappa reactions - the solo & the end sequence really seemed to move you, much as it did me (and still does), thirty years ago. Keep diggin', there's plenty of gold yet...
Thank You! Finally somebody reacting to Po-Jama People, and my favorite Frank guitar jam on record. When ya get back to more Zappa, try Yo Mama or Muffin Man. Hoy Hoy Hoy!
It might sound chaotic, but keep in mind that almost every beat and every note of it is carefully composed and orchestrated. Every weird little off-tempo fill, every crazy-fast xylophone run, every off-kilter note, every munchkin vocal... the whole complex chaotic mess is intentional and purposeful and the more you scrutinize it with your eardrums, the more you come to appreciate the consummate skill and transcendent beauty of it. It is a well-ordered chaos that requires excellent musicians to perform.
This song was about his 1973 band, several member of which were still around in '75. Mostly conservatory graduates who'd rather play chess or read books than mess around with groupies (FZ's favorite pastime while on tour).

@@TommiBrem According to the book "The real Frank Zappa book" it was a decision taken after spending some time with mr. Dylan, having some coffee and so on. And during that time Bob D. didn´t smile once. I guess Frank Z found that a bit disturbing.
The religious issue drove a wedge between them but as I understand it Frank was frustrated by the fact Dylan's songs were far from finished, and he made matters worse by floating the idea of getting Giorgio Moroder involved. (The idea of Dylan being superimposed on some electro-disco backing tracks tickled his fancy, if no-one else's)

The drummer on this record was Chester Thompson, who went on to play with Weather Report. Just terrific.
