Really love this design, but I’m not sure this is where I should have started. Steep learner’s curve here, but beautiful ornaments produced!

Your work is so hypnotic! Do you thin your paint, or thicken it? It lays so perfectly. I have problems doing the "dots get smaller" technique, the paint stops transferring after the 3rd dot, but when I thinned the paint, it became blobs not dots. I'm wondering if there is a medium that works well for thinning? I'm not doing ornaments, just black paper cards which I enter in art card exchanges all over the world :)

Depends on what kind of paint you use. I started with Decoart Americana plus Liquitex pouring medium (very few) If you use heavy body paint Liquitex pouring medium it's the best on the marke. Mix with 1:1 ratio and keep adding pouring medium till you have the consistency you need.

Very pretty, but you have this titled for beginners. There is no introduction to the type of paint used nor of ornament preparation for the painting. There is no verbal instruction as to why the placement of the beginning dots. Not to mention the speed of the video. Great for more experienced artists.

Look at Barbieft Me above, where I told her how to slow the speed down when playing the videos. A good consistency of acrylic paint seems to be Deco Art Americana, if you are able to buy. If you are starting out and buying your paints the multi surface acrylic paints can be used on many surfaces. If not, then any acrylic paint mixed to the consistency of yoghurt is okay. You can use a Gel Medium to thicken your paint and a pour medium to thin it, if you are having problems with your climate or for any other reason. Maybe you surface is too steep, then the paint may want to dribble, to thicken it. While the mediums aren't that cheap, they go a very long way.
Your beginning dot is usually in the middle of your work area. But not always, depending on your design. The decoration is sometimes painted with a black acrylic paint, though you can choose any colour you choose. Either in a matte or gloss. Black paint does tend to allow the dots to pop. Your choice. I would recommend you try painting on flat Christmas balls first. Both flat and round can be purchased in shatterproof plastic. Glass is difficult to work with. I buy my ornaments on eBay. I suggest you got the etsyshop.com\SweetWillowDesigns. She sells two packs of design and practice template sheets that will help you learn how to Dot paint and space. Very helpful.
She also has a RUclips channel. There are some very helpful dot artist to be found on YT. I hope you soon learn to love dot painting mandalas, they are very therapeutic.

@@Lyn4817 Thank you for sharing your info! I'm working on getting the consistency right. I dot paint on black bristol board, very stiff. I spray it with matte varnish first though, so it's non-absorbent. Getting the consistency right is the hard part!

Joyce Kimble The shiny ornaments originally like that...I bought them on amazon!😁 I like it better because from the acrylic sometimes you can see lines or the black acrylic not cover perfectly your ornaments!

You can slow down the replay of the video yourself. Click on the three dots on the top right hand side of the video. Then select playback speed and select your speed. Don't forget to reset when finished. Pause the video if you are dotting along and you need to catch up. Have fun.
