TokenBlackman7 Exactly.. I think its fucked up that its taboo for a white kid to be prideful of his heritage and is mind fucked into thinking being black is cool. Why is he deemed gay for appreciating a well dressed man? Are ppl gay because they think a rapper is fresh? Or they like the style or shoes? That's asinine.. The ignorance with some of our own is completely sour. The guy is well dressed, and I myself like his style as well.. It's like we can't appreciate anything unless it's hood or a cliche.. Something is horribly wrong with that picture. Then you say his picture is gay or ugly, but that doesn't deem y'all as homosexual for judging the next mans features? Lol.

Honestly, my opinion is that if the word has that much baggage on it, why even use it? If it's a term of endearment when we use it, but immediately loses that endearment when a white person says it -- even in the same context -- it's clear that the word has not lost its toxicity. Jidenna is an underrated performer, but I'm not on board with his stance here. That said, I'm not losing any sleep over the use of the N-word... it shows weakness to let words compel one to violence.
I think term loses its endearment when its use by a person without the background for it. If somebody I dont know call me like that, I'll be pissed. If somebody I know and who had a different (ie better) background than me called me that, I'll be pissed of. Why? Because, of its origin.
What's the background for the use of the word? That's kinda vague. Because black people can have the wrong "background" to use the n-word. Drake uses the n-word, he's a Jewish black guy that grew up in the suburbs of Toronto while starring on Degrassi. Hell, if he can use it, ANYONE can use it!!!
I dont give a damn about color but if a black with a suit call me that i would be as pissed as if he were a white in the same shoes. Now if a white dude is my friend and neighbour (ie background) then i dont care, because this guy has to work as hard as me to get were he wants
I like what you saying its a toxic term and me myself being a black man don't like being called that even by other black people. Its a dehumanizing word in my opinion.
MrFredstt and? You're WHITE. Why concern yourself with the affairs of a culture your not even apart of. lol your opinion on the words we say or are offended by doesn't matter. You're probably the only white guy you know fixated on blacks. Mind your business and return too your culture.
Beat me to it. I felt uncomfortable when they both concluded negro was correct. Not sure if it was the word itself or the fact that they both mistook Spanish for French, but I cringed lol.
O-Ren Ishii Do you really think that earning a degree in a subject from one of the greatest universities in the world, does not make you fairly knowledgeable on that subject? Come on.
O-Ren Ishii Ok, I'll adjust my original statement. Jidenna earned a degree in Race and Ethnicity from Stanford University. He is educated on this topic, which therefore, renders him more credible on this topic.
jon balmer I still disagree. The opinions he has stated in this interview was strictly emotional. None of his opinions required education on race and ethnicity from Stanford University.
+So Flo Absolutely. It is negative, defeatist and makes a mockery of the suffering of the men and women exposed to it's real meaning. Why someone as educated as Jidenna (Bachelor of Arts from Stanford) cannot know the importance of this is beyond me. Shame.
Thank you, I agree, we don't need it. We should let it die. The word is full of hate of are people. When I hear it, I see that person as a slave and I see the white person as a slave master.
Great interview. I really liked when Vlad asked Jidenna about how he would feel if, say, a Puerto Rican said the n-word. When I think about how non-black hip-hop stars like Pitbull, DJ Khaled, Jim Jones, etc. freely use the word, I tend to wonder if the n-word, in the context of relation, has transformed from a black-thing, to a as-long-as-you're-not-white-thing. Tricky convo to have.
***** Jim Jones is part Aruban, part Puerto Rican...Unless my research is wrong, that's very probable :) But to answer your question, as a black man myself, I consider "black" to be defined by biological ethnicity, not sociological race, and I think that's what a lot of people think of when they say someone is black...unless they just "look" black but their ethnicity is actually unknown. Blacks, samoans, Hispanics...I believe we have a ton in common in terms of racial ancestry. But I think anyone should be very proud of whatever race or ethnicity they are, instead of trying to "act black" or "act white" or something they aren't. This includes usage of the n-word.
***** Yeah I agree with you there. A Hispanic kid, for example, grows up in a black neighborhood with a black family, traditions and vernacular are bound to be adopted and shared. No question, no argument. But there's a difference between that, which is fine, and "acting" a different race, which I think is silly. You know what I mean? The later is quite prevalent, which is why I bring it up. And using the n-word doesn't necessarily mean one is trying to straight-up "act" one way or the other, but it's there y'know. Assimilation, adaptation, survival, I get that for sure. Disowning ones true race and ethnicity, and thus that culture and history, however, to pretend to be another? I dunno if that's offensive or to be rewarded haha.
Every #VladHater out there should hear this interview. I love what he said about him never using the "N-Word" and appreciating and valuing his being accepted by the black hip-hop culture and being able to have a business and flourish. He gets a stamp from me for this. 💯💯💯
Yo I never thought about how frustrated all these white dudes who like rap are especially when there's a track that's fire, and right in the middle of the line is the word 'Nigga' and they can only say it when they're by themselves.
the more i listen to this well educated artist the more i adore him, this guy is amazing and his music is amazing, im currently burning inside while waiting for this album to drop
Hip-Hop needs this dude. He is the perfect intersection of style and substance. With that being said, I am a white fella and I don't think anyone should use the N-word.......seriously, it just sounds ignorant no matter who's tongue it rolls off of.
All words should be free to be used (in a perfect world (but then again negative words wouldn't exist in such a place)), nothing can ever be truly censored or stopped. As it stands, the limited usage of a word for small occasions of cussing or endearment amongst local groups of people will naturally spread and eventually become less or not taboo. I'd suggest looking up the euphemism or dysphemism treadmill. Of course there are exceptions to all rules, but it's unlikely that the word will hold its stigma forever.
I dig this brother. Not only is he making good music. He is leading by example and showing that you can be in hip hop, be classy and not forget your roots.

***** from my understanding, she led her local NAACP. She also teaches classes on African-American culture at Eastern Washington University and is chairwoman of a police oversight committee monitoring fairness in police activities.
so I'm South African and the word is used way too much out here. The equivalent for the word here in my country is "kaffir" and I havent heard a single black person use the word "kaffir" whether its endearing or being hateful, we just dont touch that word, but African Americans have made it glamorous and cool (music, movies) and since USA has so much influence on a lot of countries, the hip hop artists out here in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban or where ever in my home country, will use it because they have adapted the hip hop culture and the N-word seems to be part of hip hop lingo.
Using it as some twisted word of endearment is completely sick. But they do it. As a blackman I have never been comfortable hearing the word. He lost me at it's a beautiful word. It is not.
He reminds of the characters off Boardwalk Empire where they had The Libyan's.. I actually like the fashion he's displaying, very classy. He's an interesting person..
I don't know what majority your speaking of wen the African blood line can't be measured just by pigment I am actually Puerto Rican born and raised and my family is from liosa and santurce if you know anything about that heritage then I dont have to go on..... am not thinking is a fact buddy ....I don't even care if he is or not (obviously he's not)my point is know what your talking about before you bring us in to the pic... mr t that goes for you as well
Mixed blood is detected by people who actually have PROVEN mixed ancestry. Assuming people are mixed when they look white and have no proof of any non-whites in their family tree, is idiotic. The majority of rican's in Puerto Rico consider themselves to be white Spanish according to every census ever given on that island.
Having zero African features, absolutely no mixed or non-white ancestors equals you being white, that's how it works. You need mixed ancestry to be mixed. Puerto Rico is: 75.8% white , 12.4% black/African American , 8.5% other (includes American Indian, etc), 3.3% mixed Eh you have more black people on your Island than mixed but how much representation do these blacks get on Rican TV shows? Of course you had slaves on the island but that's no indication that most Ricans are mixed. That was a pointless "fact" to make. Your proof of mixed and non white ancestry is the amount of people who identify as black or mixed, that's it. Dominicans are mainly mixed but Ricans are not. Even if we take into account random people with distant black ancesty the amount of mixed people overall would barely break 10% in PR. There are more mixed people ratio-wise in America than Puerto Rico but you don't hear white Americans claiming that they're all generally mixed because slavery occurred. That doesn't even make sense.
I'm new to Jidenna. Loving his music and style right now. Didn't know he was half white tho. Listening to him talk in this interview, he seems a little too conscious and secure in his blackness to be half white.
A friend of mine has an Austrian mother and a black American father. So he was born in Vienna, in Austria and he finished Highschool in the states. So when he came back to Europe, I asked him if it was better in the states. He said, well you have to types of whites in the US, the over the top friendly whites, who just allow black people to do everything and racists, at least those are the ones he met. So I asked him, which country does he prefer to live in, he said Austria. He said sure, there is racism in Austria, but you never have to fear for your life and people are simply honest, they dont just kiss your ass because you are black or something. The US will never find peace in its own society, because it has to many race baiting pimps
I honestly had no clue who this gentleman was, but his answers and overall vibe just spoke intelligence to me. I'm so glad that I had the chance to watch this video, and I look forward to googling him and finding out who he is... Thanx Vlad TV
"It's not a term of endearment from a white person! "..."nor do i always care for the way some black's and other people use it"...u can say this again.... so smart and so real this guy's style and individuality is endless .....not afraid to be who he is and still be honest.....wouldn't expect him right off to be a rapper either by looking at him not knowing he is.....yet goes hard amazing really
Puerto Rican is a nationality.. Period. I'm black and my nationality is Puerto Rican. So no, the struggles were the same between the both.. And, in my birthplace it's still a struggle going on.
They Live fasho. Word. I was a little lazy. I understand that Africans and Europeans have the same relationship everywhere. Let me ask you a question. How would someone like Fat Joe be seen racially as in Puerto Rico?
This is a hell of a topic. I have been in heated debates about this one. Your innotation and use of the word is important to the meaning of the word. To me it's common sense. And for me if the white person uses the word it is a slippery slope and if you are that in love with American black culture that you are willing to fight in our defence, more power to you.
The N word, with everything we’ve been through as a society , I️ feel is just an unnecessary word at this point. It’s obviously a word with a lot of controversy and it’s just a word that really has no use in anyone’s vocabulary .
Thank you, youngster for your take on nword use among others. I appreciate that from the heart, truthful, mature in a sense response. Since that's understood, it isn't an issue. Very good, J
I Bramblebush This is about our peple having something whites "can't". It's a power thing. They get a kick out of whites being scared to say it. Getting physical is a way to gain back power if a white has the audacity to use it. It's not the word that offends them, it's white bravery and comfortability that offends them.
OnAmission8 it is power and authority in that word and if whites cant use it power is taken from them and they have to be in control at all times even over the n-word white power cant be isolated
I guess so. Even though I personally don't use the word as a black female, I actually love how the black community hijacked the term from white Americans, from them using it as a derogatory term freely to now "I dare you to say it" and if you do be prepared to possibly be labeled a racist.
If somebody shouldn't say it, nobody should say it. If somebody can say it, everybody can say it. It's either just a word or it's a serious infraction. You can't have it both ways.
IceDragon978 Well he said, feel free to say it. He has no jurisdiction over your tongue. But when white people use the word, there's always a historical reminder of what it was used for and that will never disappear.
It should never be a term of endearment for anybody, due to the history, I completely understand about making a negative word and turning it positive but most Africans, Jamaicans and many other places won't use the word because no matter what it will always be a negative word, the word should not be used full stop. My personal opinion.
Cooley96 Then I don't know where you have been. I've witnessed a man call a woman his "main bitch" and she blushed and wore it as a badge of honor. So many of these same women will even boast about being "his main bitch" and tell the "side bitches" to stay in their place. I've seen it.
Of course you can go thru life and cry every time sum1 calls u a name, or you could just not worry about words so much and live a happier life. Up to you.
I personally, don't agree. I respect his argument, but white people using the N-word as a term of endearment is completely fine as long as it isn't in a disrespectful way. I feel like it's not what it used to be anymore and it can be used by any race as a term of endearment. We've got whites and Latinos more associated with the black community than some black people these days and consider it apart of their culture- so who are we to say it anymore than them? That's just my two sense.
Increase Peace If you don't know, you're not worth the conversation. It's willful ignorance of an extreme nature and/or arrested development. In all cases, this makes any engagement with you a moot point. My advice.... read to learn.

I don't know what majority your speaking of wen the African blood line can't be measured just by pigment I am actually Puerto Rican born and raised and my family is from liosa and santurce if you know anything about that heritage then I dont have to go on..... am not thinking is a fact buddy ....I don't even care if he is or not (obviously he's not)my point is know what your talking about before you bring us in to the pic... mr t that goes for you as well
*loisa
Mixed blood is detected by people who actually have PROVEN mixed ancestry. Assuming people are mixed when they look white and have no proof of any non-whites in their family tree, is idiotic. The majority of rican's in Puerto Rico consider themselves to be white Spanish according to every census ever given on that island.
Having zero African features, absolutely no mixed or non-white ancestors equals you being white, that's how it works. You need mixed ancestry to be mixed. Puerto Rico is:
75.8% white ,
12.4% black/African American ,
8.5% other (includes American Indian, etc), 3.3% mixed
Eh you have more black people on your Island than mixed but how much representation do these blacks get on Rican TV shows? Of course you had slaves on the island but that's no indication that most Ricans are mixed. That was a pointless "fact" to make. Your proof of mixed and non white ancestry is the amount of people who identify as black or mixed, that's it. Dominicans are mainly mixed but Ricans are not. Even if we take into account random people with distant black ancesty the amount of mixed people overall would barely break 10% in PR. There are more mixed people ratio-wise in America than Puerto Rico but you don't hear white Americans claiming that they're all generally mixed because slavery occurred. That doesn't even make sense.
The slight smirk when he was asked about Rachael... lol
I'm new to Jidenna. Loving his music and style right now. Didn't know he was half white tho. Listening to him talk in this interview, he seems a little too conscious and secure in his blackness to be half white.
Awesome point about the Charleston dude. Great conversation all around
Passé Noir lol
You are in fact the only person that knows the french word for black
Donmonique M he at least said he didn't speak French.. so don't fault him for trying.
"They know that I'd roll up my sleeves and they'd be on the ground" LOVE DAT
I am truly feeling Jidenna
are u feeling.............me???
+Percy Sherrod I am loving him
"It's not a term of endearment from a white person!
I'm mad he turned it into his own interview, "as a white person I feel..." lmao, nobody asked you!
FINALLY VLAD HAS SOME INTELLIGENT PEOPLE ON HERE. I'VE JUST HEARD OF THIS GUY BUT I HAVE MAD RESPECT FOR HIM
The French word for black is noir, just for future reference.
Jidenna is brilliant, though.
Maybe people shouldn't use the word if it offense people
Vlad you can't compare apples with oranges. Black people had very different experiences with Puerto Ricans and whites.
***** maybe, but I suspect that he'll be viewed as white in Puerto Rico. Their definitions are different from ours.
Thank you Vlad. I appreciate your integrity and character Vlad. Jidenna is so artistically wonderful. Why is he not more recognized?
I don't understand some white people's obsession with the n-word. And I'm white...
Loved him on BET Awards. #InstantFan
Well spoken dude! Cool, calm and collected!
Man came straight out of 1875
Alot of people have made a comment about his archiac dress sense. He explains why in one interview!
The N word, with everything we’ve been through as a society , I️ feel is just an unnecessary word at this point. It’s obviously a word with a lot of controversy and it’s just a word that really has no use in anyone’s vocabulary .
Seems like a cool dude.
He is very well spoken & comfortable with who he is! Im most def a fan!
His educated mind is so attractive 😍😍
lol hahahaha that Moment when he said ( they know i would Roll up my sleeves and lay em on the ground)) lol i actually visualized that lol
Reads title... No shit.
Thank you, youngster for your take on nword use among others.
I appreciate that from the heart, truthful, mature in a sense response.
Since that's understood,
it isn't an issue.
Very good, J
Passe noir
Never realized how intelligent this brother is...hated that classic man song but the more I hear from him...respect.
Yeah, I just started listening to his catalog...you are correct.
I hate hypocrites who say they use the word, but don't white folk saying it. Just stop saying it all together.
I Bramblebush This is about our peple having something whites "can't". It's a power thing. They get a kick out of whites being scared to say it. Getting physical is a way to gain back power if a white has the audacity to use it. It's not the word that offends them, it's white bravery and comfortability that offends them.
O-Ren Ishii It's not power, its stupidity. Have some self-respect.
I Bramblebush I don't understand why white people would want to say the N-word so bad??
OnAmission8 it is power and authority in that word and if whites cant use it power is taken from them and they have to be in control at all times even over the n-word white power cant be isolated
I guess so. Even though I personally don't use the word as a black female, I actually love how the black community hijacked the term from white Americans, from them using it as a derogatory term freely to now "I dare you to say it" and if you do be prepared to possibly be labeled a racist.
I respect him so much for his comments
Sorry, but this dude couldn't slap the shit out of nobody.
I adore his style. Such a dapper gentleman
He's not African American he is white and African get it right.
sadatkb allah He declares himself as Nigerian American
That's cool but don't try to say as he talking about us native blacks.
Bruh, He's basically a native black bruh was born and raise in the U.S as well as many other places.
He is black I'm talking about his ethnicity.
What's the different between African Americans and Africans
good interview
What is the name of the woman they are talking about?
Rachel Dolezal
Great interview
If somebody shouldn't say it, nobody should say it. If somebody can say it, everybody can say it.
It's either just a word or it's a serious infraction. You can't have it both ways.
IceDragon978 Well he said, feel free to say it. He has no jurisdiction over your tongue. But when white people use the word, there's always a historical reminder of what it was used for and that will never disappear.
Yes, you can have it both ways - but like he said - they can say it, and then deal with the ramifications and repercussions...
It should never be a term of endearment for anybody, due to the history, I completely understand about making a negative word and turning it positive but most Africans, Jamaicans and many other places won't use the word because no matter what it will always be a negative word, the word should not be used full stop. My personal opinion.
IceDragon978 STFU white boy
Love this brother's outlook.
No disrespect but this guy won't even be on the radar in 2017
say what?
Haha he still on it 😂😂😂2017
good call
Janelle Haha no hes not 😂😂😂2018
Bitch ass. Eat your words.
Great interview.
Just like when girls call themselves bad bitches, but If a man say it they wanna get mad😂
TheAmazing NebulaJo It's all in context. Some may even be flattered if a man they greatly admire refers to them as his bitch.
O-Ren Ishii Yeah right.
Cooley96 Yeah right what?
O-Ren Ishii I guarantee you no woman will be flattered to be called a bitch. She may act a s though, but she will never be flattered.
Cooley96 Then I don't know where you have been. I've witnessed a man call a woman his "main bitch" and she blushed and wore it as a badge of honor. So many of these same women will even boast about being "his main bitch" and tell the "side bitches" to stay in their place. I've seen it.
Hypocrisy is the reason there are issues with this topic. If its bad don't do it period
3:00 - 3:25 LISTEN TO VLAD WHITE PEOPLE..
Of course you can go thru life and cry every time sum1 calls u a name, or you could just not worry about words so much and live a happier life. Up to you.
There's nothing wrong with a white dude saying nigga while rapping along with a song. Get over it.
Chris Ferguson Well, he looks stupid, at least.
How does he look stupid?
Increase Peace White people sound stupid when they say it, this coming from a biracial person who looks and lives white.
Increase Peace So pretty much white in everything but. race
So what? That gives you more validity or something? To be honest, it's black people who look stupid saying a word that was meant as an INSULT.
This man is so slept on as an artist
I personally, don't agree. I respect his argument, but white people using the N-word as a term of endearment is completely fine as long as it isn't in a disrespectful way. I feel like it's not what it used to be anymore and it can be used by any race as a term of endearment. We've got whites and Latinos more associated with the black community than some black people these days and consider it apart of their culture- so who are we to say it anymore than them? That's just my two sense.
don't sound smart lmao
bullshit.... not from white ppl. Not even Mexicans.
c'mon now
What difference does it make if it's from blacks, whites or Mexicans?
Increase Peace If you don't know, you're not worth the conversation. It's willful ignorance of an extreme nature and/or arrested development. In all cases, this makes any engagement with you a moot point. My advice.... read to learn.
I wish that guy a lot of success.
