Tour of the Ford Mustang Factory - Flat Rock Plant, Detroit

- Following my visit to NAIAS with Ford, before flying home we were taken on a whistle-stop tour around the Flat Rock plant, home of the Ford Mustang. Normally one cannot film within the walls where everything from a Mustang EcoBoost to the latest Shelby Mustangs are built, but we were granted special permission to give you an insight into the facility.
I've edited the video to give you a feel of what goes on, from the stamping department to final assembly, although naturally there's a whole lot more to know about. Given the importance of this location, building over 1m Mustangs since 2005, I felt it worth sharing the experience.
Thanks for watching, Tim

Mustang is a truly amazing car! Big thanks to everyone that made this marvel possible.
So proud of the Mustang, it is becoming a true world class legend.
Yup the only muscle car that was never discontinued like the challengers camaros chargers there are so many mustangs out there
@@ponyboy2195 Yet, the Mustang isn't a muscle car, it's a sports car. The Challenger is the only true muscle car. It doesn't matter it was discontinued.
@@rickitysplitz7035 who cares. The mustang is miles ahead of the challenger in every single way.
America should have gotten a Barra powered Turbo in a Mustang at least.
I toured the Flatrock Plant a few years back, before the Fusion addition was completed. It was a hard-hat and goggles walking tour then and the most impressive place I had ever seen. The current video of the tram-tour with audio is terrific. I hope to visit there again and see the new Lincoln Continentals in production. Assembly began on July 11th. I have one on order and hope to take delivery of it in the Fall or early Winter of 2016.
Well done, Shmee. Reminds me of the Mustang plant tour I did in Dearborn, Michigan, around 1979. Fewer people on the factory floor now. It appears like the robots & computers continue to do more & more.
Even with the 94-04 Sn95/NewEdge it was the case, there is a video following their production out there.
I wanted a challenger originally but drove the mustang love it 10x more got a 2017 gt lighting blue
I'm on my 2nd Mustang now, and they just keep getting better in some ways!
great video proud to say i now own 3 mustangs 89 lx w/ 351w, 05 v6, 2015 GT I just love these cars
I love my Mustang, one of the many things i'm glad mankind created. I'm also from Detroit so the Mustang has more meaning for me! 🖤✊🏾
that place is huge!, great video, it was like a short version of How it's Made, lol
I like my 2017 Mustang Ford is the only car I'll drive thank you to the employee's at Ford for doing a great job an stay safe everyone
Shmee i hope youve been enjoying your time here in Michigan! Im from Detroit myself and its cool to see you and your vids here in the city.
I find it ironic how some Europeans complain about the build quality and plastics on some American cars when Japanese cars use more plastics then C4.
*JoshuaPlays* It all nationalism and envy. Its been like that since we became superpower at the beginning of the century.
Well, Europeans are likely comparing with ... European interiors, not American. Massive Mustang fan myself (hence why I'm here) but there's a clear difference in quality between the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes etc and Ford, Dodge and Chevrolet.
But there's a reason a Mustang is an affordable blue collar car, and I hope they keep it that way.
Mustangs are awesome! The car that can run with just about everything out there !
I normally don't like mustangs but ate my words and bought a 2016 gt350
hahah same here lol
lol congrats!!!
Same, I got the 2017 GT because I can't afford the 350 lol. But I agree with you, I was never a mustang guy until I drove the new S550 chassis.
Bobby I bought a 2001 cobra 4.6 I don’t believe it’s one of the more popular models because of the independent rear suspension and the 4.6 engine. I really love it.
Thanks for the tour Shmee
Go to the VW Wolfsburg factory in Germany if you get the chance, great facility with a long history. I'm surprised they don't wear a uniform. I love how they state all kind of so called incredible unique production stages which actually are applied all over the world.
Have my V6 pony 5 speed love it. It's my baby.
Progressive stamping. Biggest innovation to the auto industry since the assembly line. Ford used to be only able to make a fraction of vehicles a year prior to it.
Cool!Great to see how the Mustang is developed!
I did a tour at this plant and was totally impressed.
I was tired of BMW, Mercedes and AUDI. I bought the 2017 Mustang, in Belgium the car is a real eyecatcher compared to those boring German cars, almost everybody her loves the car but a few have the guts to buy one.
I usually don't like American cars but I have to admit, mustangs are really cool!!!!
+Will James It instantly adds 2 inches to your ball sac, trust me.
THAT WAS WAY COOL! Thanks Shmee.
Have two Fords. A Fusion and a Fiesta. We love them both.
I love mustangs!!!
Thanks Chmee great video. Can't help but think that the factory doesn't look as bright and clinical as the Porsche or Tesla factories. I think a few sky lights would help to brighten up the place.
this is where my Mustang GT was made........and shipped to Australia!! now second biggest market globally after the US!!....my shadow black is now supercharged 854HP from Herrod Performance Melbourne Australia!!
Awesome, thanks for posting.
thanks a million for sharing this video.
you sure do get around, seen you make videosin Dubai, at LeMans etc etc
Great video!
The best american muscle car ..... Love it
I didn't know you could do a tour of the plant. I've been to Detroit twice this month and would have liked to go when my mustang was in the production process in November.
daniel55645 you won’t be able to photograph the plant UAW won’t allow it.
Mustangs for life!!!!!!! I have a 2014
I work there!
So do i😊
I just bought a 2019 Mustang GT, love the car out two things really stand out. The rear trunk light doesn't work, and upon closer inspection, there is no wire connected to the bulb, its completely missing. The other issue is my GT has the Ecoboost analog RPM gauge installed which has the 6500 rpm redline. The GT has a totally different engine and the rpm gauge is supposed to have a 7400 redline. This is the gauge that was supposed to be installed. 🤔😡
@@JCTiggs1 LMAO
+JCTiggs Surely you can go back to the dealership and have them swap the tachometer an install a trunk light for ya?
@@D-dly0 Regarding the trunk light, absolutely! They are taking care of the issue but I'm waiting on a part for another issue as well (the rear decklid was cracked at some point during delivery and needs to be replaced). The analog rpm gauge with the incorrect redline is a complicated issue since it affects ALL 2018+ Mustang GT's with an analog km/h speedometer outside of the US. The rpm gauge and the speedometer are a single part and not two individual parts. Therefore, one half (the rpm gauge) can not be swapped out while retaining the other half (the km/h speedometer). The dealership currently can't do anything about this issue, since its up to Ford Head Office to either manufacture the proper part, issue a special rpm overlay piece that is somehow retrofitted to the existed gauge panel while retaining the km/h speedometer, or swap out the improper analog RPM gauge with the digital dash which does have the correct rpm redline. I'm currently discussing this issue with Ford to see how they're going to fix the problem. 🙄
Retired from maintenance a year ago. Good plant.
This is where my 2016 was made :D
That was interesting! Thanks for sharing.
would love to do the tour, what would be sweet is to meet the 2 people that built my voodoo 5.2l engine in my 2017 Gt350
My favorite car 😍
The introductory is not totally true...The Flatrock foundry was built in 1972 but the assembly plant, a totally separate building was build in 1987 and assembled Mazdas
I really wanted a Mustang and was planning to buy one. Then I rented one; driving it cured me of any desire I once had.
*****
If you rented one and it cured you,it must have been an entry level POS or beat to shit from being rented because I've never heard of anyone not loving this car..I have an 04 GT that and I'm thinking about the 2015 now but mine I did a few upgrades to and I have 96k on mine.
Mike Samra exactly
ugly ass car
I just bought a 2017 GT Convertible just by how beautiful it is and test driving it completely sealed the deal
Did you ever end up buying a 2015? I have an 01 GT and am thinking about getting a 2018.
Awesome video man!
Jeeze, those presses are massive
So proud that pretty much everything is made in the U.S.
You want to get "behind the scenes" on some of Ford's cars.A lot of components have Made in damn near anywhere else stamped on them.
Hey Shmee do you happen to have the full length unedited video of this tour? I just Purchased a new 2015 50th Anniversary and I would love to see the full tour..
Nice video! Thanks for the upload. :-)
Great video Tim! Would love to work on one of those production lines.
Pablo Garciadealba Norwood Ohio GM plant is closing soon.
Thanks for this video. Now I've seen where my 2015 Mustang GT was assembled. Do they normally have tours to the public?
I hope to see new videos of you driving your new car.
I would love this job. Got a Mustang.
Took a photo of my 2005 mustang next to that plant just after I bought it
I’d show you but RUclips comments suck
I bought the car in Detroit and thought I gotta take a photo of the car by the plant before I head home
Maybe some day I’ll come back and take a tour of the place where my car was built
I like how ford names its flagship vehicles after the most feared US fighter jets/planes... I think that's awesome..
4:35 if I knew a video was being made, I would have turned around and waved.
I really appreciate the video since I am studying engineering in Italy, but I really wonder how you could get the permission to shoot inside the production plant
I have been to some factories, but I was not even allowed to take pic. Shmee150
im a big mustang fan, but I wonder how many component does the mustang share with the fusion?
hey Tim, i am from norway and im going on a trip to England, i wounder if you coud tell me some places to spott some nice cars?
And how many parts are stamped with the small triangle with a 7 in its center, designating it as a recycle plastic part. No foul, I just know lots of cars, all manufacturers, use plastic components. Thanks for the quick tour. To have a good tour, would take longer, PLEASE!
This plant is less than a mile from where I live.
Best video ever
Yes
are there walking tours to this mustang plant? is there some kind of schedule? very appreciate for any answer
Well that's a huge factory.
Flat Rock makes the new Continental as well now.
I’m not too sure but didn’t Flat rock plant make the Ford / Mazda alliance cars, the Ford Probe and the Mazda 626 or whatever it’s called there.
I totally forgot what I was watching and was waiting for a goat and a fucking huge T-Rex. Never mind.
Lol wtf
Start to finish... how long does it take them to build the actual car
My dad's Fusion was built here.
Great camera work
My car was born there, omg
I have a 2016 mustang an I love it
Did the tour a few years ago. No Trams, loooong walk.
A lot less workers than I would have expected... I guess because of all the robots and automation.
I love the mustangs
Is this factory going to be closed?
Damn so this is how my 2016 mustang was made
I love how my teachers make me watch this
So, if you have to remove the engine, you have to remove it with the car on a hoist and drop it from the bottom?? UGGH!!!!💣
Did anyone else notice the Komatsu presses stamping American made cars...Not bashing, just being observant.
David Johnston have to remember that Mazdas were made at flat rock factory before the mustang, I’m sure the stamp press was left after Ford sold Mazda.
Why the hell they have so many back order? I ordered my Shelby GT 350 in 2017 and delivered in 2018.
Amazing
wow, they can make the car tilt. Man, that's some hi-tech shit.
The narrator sounds like exactly like the narrator from the Disneyland Railroad and other rides.
shmee should get a mustang
Ben is getting one ;)
Sad to see not a lot of people on the line anymore.
Even sadder, every one of these peoples jobs **could** be automated.
Why is the Flat Rock plant holding 4,000 units ... what's the PROBLEM ????
I bought a 2016 Roush Stage 3. I should have bought the GT350. Traded the Stage 3 for a Roush F-150.
I love ferd!
It's bloody jurassic park isn't it. Where's the eggs hatching?
6:03 baby mustang is bearly walking lol
how many stangs come out a day ??????
Really sad to see but a handful of people working in the factory. Dam place is totally automated.
This might sound weird but I want to go there just as bad as mr krabs wanted to go to the money mint
"World class quality" as half if not more of the 2015 mustangs have multiple misaligned hoods trucks quarter panels etc.
Indian favourite car mustang
Can you tell me how much can you make on One Day
All built in the USA. GM and MOPAR can't say that.
MADE IN USA!
Mustangs are the best. 1964 of course.
Sir G
sir me also felt here in the job plzzzzz
It seems so crude compared to the BMW factory. Highly recommended if anyone visits Stuttgart.
That would be interesting to see the difference. The airplane manufacturing plants in Kansas are very similar to this car plant in Detroit, maybe the crude appearance is an American thing?
you compared BMW a luxury vehicle to Ford, which is meant for low-middle class folk
Went to both. Have to say the BMW tour was a lot more impressive.
Actually what you need to understand is the fact that Americans like things simple not all fancy bullshit for now reason. we are building machines for everyday use here not a Ford GT. for that Ford has its own luxurious facility. but if you go look at NASA Space Shuttle research facilities and or Boeing Aircraft Facilities they all look as simple as flat rock because in the end its all machines that you use everyday and don't require the most expensive shit in the world. which is whats wrong in the world today. you guys think a car sucks just because of the womb it is born. well tell me something guys, every single commercial airliner(is mostly built by Boeing) or Cessnas are built in American Soil in factories also as simple as you see this one be. and hey they are the greatest ever built lets not forget the 747, the A380. and its just an american thing. Europeans have always had that high divinity for they're workplace shit that american cowboys never cared about and hey Cessnas are top of the line Private Jets and they are built in Kansas. ,maybe the most american place in history
Your comment is crude not the plant. Visual appearance means little in this game. Its about efficiencies, quality, and labor hours per vehicle.
half-life
