- A lot of us are on the quest for style, and it's more tangible than you might think! If you're comfortable on jumps but just getting started with whips, check out episode 16 to get started: • Throw Your First Whip ...
Key Takeaways:
1. Get comfortable hitting the bigger jump straight
2. Before adding movement, get a video of yourself and check for:
-Standing tall off the lip
-Light and relaxed hands
-Clean arc with both wheels
-Soft landing
3. Start with a bar turn to initiate body movement
4. Then start winding up your core, adding a little at a time, to initiate bike movement

ABOUT SIMON LAWTON
Following his own Pro Downhill mountain bike racing career, Simon Lawton (Owner and Founder) has spent the last 25 years analyzing the top riders in the world to understand the tiniest details that contribute to their greatest successes, and also any weaknesses that are holding them back. With an exceptional understanding of kinesiology, Simon has developed his own teaching curriculum that explains the incredible relationship between human and machine. He has trained top pro mountain bike racers across the world, and his foundational techniques apply equally to beginner riders. His on-bike drills allow you to break down complex skills on the bike and develop correct techniques.

ABOUT LINNEA ROOKE
Linnea has been racing locally in the pro category, but until this year she had almost no formal training and was held back by major gaps in her technique. While she was able to carry speed well on straight downhills and high-bermed turns, she lacked foundational cornering skills and was timid in the air. In Feb 2020, she met up with Fluidride to help with a filming trip in Baja, and was fascinated by Simon's teaching methods. Wanting to be part of this mission, she left her career in healthcare in July 2020 to officially join the Fluidride team as COO. We started filming this series to document her journey of cleaning up bad habits, adding new skills to her toolkit, and chasing her dream of riding with style.

I bumped into you guys I think the day before you taped this, while Linnea was practicing on Rooster Booster. You guys are both really approachable and friendly and I really appreciated you both taking a minute to chat with a fan. Thanks for all the great content, and I look forward to the next video!
Thanks Jordan! Nice to meet you in the park. -Simon
I have to say that the video production on this channel went from always very good to truly excellent. The break down of the elements of a jump with a whip is spot on. It's something I can really visualize now as my jumping progresses. Thanks for a great vid!
Thank you so much for taking the time to say this! Our videographer is sitting right here so I'll share with him too. Thanks for watching the videos and for your support! -Linnea
I've been on loads of mtbikers channels, this is the best.
How?
Everything is explained quickly but not to quickly, in a simple way verbally and physically.
Thank you both.
That's what I'm talkin about Stopping the video to show the move... That's the animationI really wanted to see.... Maybe even a slow motion during the "Bar turn and waist turns. anyway .. PERFECT! makes it 100× easier to see what you're doing! hell yeah!!!👍👍
Oh rad I'm happy the freeze frames were helpful! Stoked to read this 🥳 -Linnea
Visualise obstacles in the opposite way… that’s gold!!! Thanks guys!
I hope it works for you! I've never visualized something hard as something easy but it definitely helped 🤣 -Linnea
She's come so far! Wow.
So proud of her hard work! -Simon
Thanks so much Squrl! It's fun seeing all the little pieces starting to add up. -Linnea
Thank you for adding the text for the tips. Super helpful for people like me who are struggling to get their brain to make a gap look like Luna Line.
Plus a great soundtrack
Heck yeah, 2 strokes!
Linnea you’re have a 1 st podium before long. Well done 👍 nice style
Thanks so much for your support Richard! Hoping for some good results 🤣 -Linnea
Linneaaa !!! 🌹👸❤❤❤
Awwwww thank you! -Linnea
Very impressive!
Thanks Keeno! -Linnea
Great tutorial as always. That place looks amazing🤯Purpose built for progression. Wish we had that sort of stuff here in the Northeast. Kinda trial by fire riding out here😂
Yeah, we are SO spoiled! -Simon
I'm sure there are some benefits to that - makes you good at looking ahead and being prepared for anything! Hopefully you bring your bike out west some time, there's a lot to ride here! -Linnea
Huckleberrys, we have a native tree down here in New Zealand called the Totara (toe tah rah) berries look very similar, small and sweet need a lot for a meal though
Ah this is really cool!! The huckleberries are pretty tart - but they're really tasty in pancakes! Would be fun to try the totara -Linnea
nice
As always, amazing content. Simon, how you liking that fox 34? Surprised to see a rockshox --> fox fork swap!
Borrowed bike, which was a bit too small for me. Was actually tough to move around as the bars were a little in my lap! My bike was in for repairs but is back up and running. Fun to try to ride a totally foreign feeling whip! Good times. -Simon
I think Simon was borrowing a bike this day 🤣 But he can whip just about anything! His bike was getting tuned up cause we're headed to the alps in a couple weeks! -Linnea
Ningaliken mah jiga nu gampang om
speaking of style, is it just me, or do linnea's pedals frequently match her shirt? 😎
Coincidence...?! 🤣 Hard to argue with pink!
This is very topical for me as this is right where I’m at. I’ve put in a lot of time on jumps in the last couple months and I’m starting to hit some pretty sizable ones at the bike park. I’m noticing that my natural move in the air is more pushing the bike to the side (like a baby table top) more than a bar turn or whip.
It still feels loose and relaxed, but I’m wondering if that is poor technique and I should concentrate more on “steering” in the air.
Maybe Simon can weigh in on this too but my guess is that by pushing the bike around, you might be getting less centered over the bike - maybe check out a slow mo video of it? What's helped me is to try to initiate the movement with my body and core rather than my hands. I guess it's hard to speculate without seeing it, but we offer remote instruction as well! -Linnea
Whipplets, am I seeing things or do you both ride left foot forward. But whip in opposite direction?
Hahaha Whipplets! That's such a great word!! Since whips are generally intended for straight jumps, I think you can do them either way. In the first whips video when we had 3 small jumps in a line, I would practice alternating left and right. It's a great observation! -Linnea
@@Fluidride I would like to take credit but I stole "whipplets" from Alex Bogusky on Joy of Bike.
What park is this
Duthie Hill in Issaquah, WA!
Linnea how wide is your handelbar?
730! I LOVE the more narrow bars. I used to ride 760 and now I wouldn't go back. I'm 5'3 for size reference -Linnea
@@Fluidride Thank you Linnea for al these precious information 🥰🔝 I am going to cut mine and I really needed an empirical advice to choose the final measurement. Actually is 780 (too big) and I would like to bring it to 750 and maybe 740 (not less). I am 170 cm tall (in Italy we use centimetres). Thanks for your TOP videos!!! 🏅🚲🔝👍🏼
