The only thing that can be defended is that the USSR really had noone else to trade with.
Nobody liked it (because communism, before committing all their purges, genocides, and deportations).
It was also utterly unprepared for any conflict, and it feared (correctly) that other countries were trying to use Germany to bring it down.
So aiming for a non-aggression pact and friendly relations was extremely reasonable. I still don't know how Stalin believed that pact could stand and didn't listen to Allied communications about the plans they found of a German invasion.
Anybody in their situation would have done pretty much the same to ensure their own survival.

This knowledge comes from my Italian history book (which was very biased against the USSR), but it might be antiquated. But not everything is a lie. The USSR was unprepared (see the disastrous defeats and encirclements at the start of the war).
It was facing diplomatic isolation, as no country would dream of legitimising a revolution of the poor.
It faced tremendous problems, and trade was very limited, both because of ideological problems (idea od communism in one country) and because nobody liked it. (source: freaking declassified CIA report on trade relations of the USSR with the West, declassified 1999/09/27).

Firstly, just as it’s a misconception that Appeasement was to prevent war altogether, it is a misconception that Stalin believed H*tler was trustworthy
He thought that Germany was incapable of fighting both against the UK and their allies, and to fight the USSR, which was true. However, this became basically another lie passed around as truth, and when both local and abroad pieces of evidence came up, Stalin allowed his ego to basically overrule it
Secondly, I disagree with the last response of “everyone else would have done the same thing”. Stalin acted purely out of self interests here, and I’ll cover it with multiple points:
Firstly, he wanted to expand while the west was busy, yet after murdering like half his army, he wasn’t able to take anyone west on in his view, so a NAP bought him (what he thought was guaranteed) time to prepare
Secondly, even with the idea that this was the goal, Stalin never needed to fund the German war machine. Tons and tons of resources were desperately needed from the USSR for Germany, and simply put, they easily could have left that part out and not traded, and starved Germany out. What is Germany gonna do? Invade the USSR while France and the UK are around?
Something everyone forgets considering this is that the initial war against Poland was a massive risk. The west was barely fortified, and only the incompetence from France saved Germany. If the USSR promised to wage war against Germany if the invaded Poland, or merely didn’t agree to the pact, then what?
No war but no NAP, Germany can’t move the entire military from the east, thus maybe the quick war in the west could have instead become a WW1 scenario
Yes to war, especially with Poland alive, this easily would have been the worst case scenario from Germany. Completely cut off from trade, fighting France, UK, Poland, and the USSR all at the same time… another element is that H*tler only gained much of his military’s support *after* winning these wars. If this happened, we could easily see an early operation Valkyrie occur

As an American I fully support America not getting involved in foreign wars. Women still aren't allowed to be front-line infantry iirc, but other than that women can serve any other role in the US military.
That's mainly because of population and reproduction stuff. Say we went to war and sent a bunch of men to the war, but the women kinda just stayed home. Then, the men come back, but there isn't many men left. But that's okay, because there are still a bunch of women, the population goes back to normal. But if we sent a bunch of women instead, the population would absolutely tank because now, not many babies are being born without women.
So, in summary, it's not a sexist thing. It's just something to keep the population balanced.

Meanwhile a single man can impregnate so many women in that time depending on the population density of where he lives. The shear difference in this ratio is why what MapBot said is true and makes sense.
I'm just going off of the top of my head here, but I believe an 85/15 ratio between women/men can slowly repopulate the population. For proof look at Paraguay after their loss of the triple alliance war. They lost 90% of their male populace in that war (male not just men), but the countries population is still managing to recover slowly.
The concept of super breeders also plays off this principle. Anthologists believe that the blue eye color gene came from a single man that was a super breeder back when he lived. Genghis Khan was also another super breeder which is why a statistically significant amount of the population can trace their linage all the way back to him.
