  • Growing up is scary. Things will change, like my relationship with my parents, family members will pass away, friends and I will drift apart, I’ll have to figure out this life thing on my own. But after all of that, I’m excited to be an older man who has experience lots of things - hurt and happiness - and has learnt and grown from that. Thank you for listening to my little ramble this evening. :P

    FAQ:
    “Name?”
Kovu Kingsrod (pronounced k-oh-vu). Yes, like the guy from the Lion King. Legally, my surname is spelt with the Norwegian letter "ø", but I usually drop it online ;)
    “Where are you from?”
A town called Fredrikstad in Norway, my accent is not a stereotypical Norwegian accent though! :P
    "How old are you?"
    17, I was born the 6th of September 2001
    "What are your pronouns?"
    He/him, I'm a guy :)
"What camera do you film with?”
My Canon g7x mark ii, occasionally my iPad, hehe
"What editing software do you use?" iMovie and/or Movavi Video Suite 12
I hope you have a lovely weekend!

There is a german song called "Keine Angst" and it says:
"Keine Angst, denn das was du jetzt bist, ist nicht, was du für immer sein wirst"
    Translation:
"No fear, because what you are now is not what you'll be forever"

I’m 42 and I certainly didn’t want to, and couldn’t imagine myself, married and being the daddy to a toddler when I was 17. That was not in my list of life goals then and, at the time, it wasn’t legally or biologically anything that could happen anyway. That said, now I’m in that position, although it did take a lot of consideration at the time of whether I wanted those things when the opportunity arose - I am very happy and content I am now in that position. An awful lot can change internally within yourself and externally in society between your youth and your ‘adult’ life. I think you just need to be open to the experience that every opportunity presents and decide, at the time it arises, if it is something that would suit you NOW, in the present, regardless of how your younger self would feel about it. I have had to wrestle with that over a number of things: careers, money decisions, work-life balance, relationships, children. Each one I would have rejected at different stages in my life for different reasons. Some you may end up regretting but you just need to know that you weighed it up at the time and you felt it wasn’t the right choice in that moment in your life. Then it’s easier to accept. You aren’t psychic, so you can’t always predict how something will work (or not work) for you, but you need to be able to trust your decision making process - just as you do for transition decisions and other choices in your life. My university decision was a bad decision - but at the time I was working with the knowledge and choices I had available, so you just have to try to make things work for you later to balance out a poor decision made for the right reasons. As for uni - spend the free time learning something - whether that is a language, experiences or musical instruments etc. It’s the only time in life you get that much flexibility to be able to create your own timetable! Even in my twenties when I was single and lonely I didn’t have the variable timetable to do different things at different times of the day, and that flexibility was a gift.

Anyways, I completely get what your saying, I was fortunate enough to learn mistakes from my friends and classmates and not from myself. Now that I have more free time, I spend it learning how to play the guitar and watching cartoons and sleeping in. I'm blessed to have known what I wanted to do since I was a little girl and I understand that it will change. I'm 18 right now.

My moms a teacher and she’s always tries to encourage her students and make sure they are pretty stress free. She always tries to be that “support network” you explained.
She had a new student morph into her class schedule. Her mom, clearly high, jumped into her classroom and screamed “do you teach stupid people math?”
My mom came home and cried for hours about this. It’s hard for her to know that kid she loves so much could go home to that. If people every think teachers don’t care that’s what caring is.

I loved your video! In response: When I grow up more I want to be super knowledgeable, more so than I am now. I want to have traveled and be okay with myself-with being alone. Have read many things, created and improved a lot with my art and storytelling. I'm very mature for an 18 year old due to trauma, but I still want to grow and feel healed more as I'm older. I want to be the opposite of what my parents were and be everything right and the opposite of what they did wrong. I want to help people on a daily basis and learn how to help myself.

You are already making such an impact on the world and have made such an impact on hundreds of thousands of subscribers lives! Here you are making an impact on my little life all the way down here 15000 km away in South Africa!
You are a great trans representative or advocate. Not only that but you are a great role model for so many people in so many ways. "Calm, wise and content!" You already have so much of that..in addition you have a vision and a purpose! That's a powerful combination. You are a great work in progress (& a great storyteller like your grandfather).
Trust yourself you wonderful man you! We never stop growing and learning. You can screw up, and angst, but you are more than enough!! You will always be gifted wth graciousness and humility. Any son or brother or father..I would want to have your qualities and gifts. Any human in fact. As a man those qualities and your insights are even more precious.

Everything will work out, trust me. It has for me, I'm in community college right now and I have a very relaxed schedule, but I have a set schedule. Having your own set schedule will actually help you. Your teachers might become your best friends later on in life and you will grow up to become a more mature version of who you are today if you want to be. No-one knows for sure what they want to do/be especially at our age. Don't be ashamed of being a teenager and you will become a calm content person if you let yourself be. Your perspective of having a family will probably change and highly unlikely that you will be alone when your older, unless you want it that way. Your life has a purpose and is only pointless if you make it that way. PS: All of what you said made sense and your adorable. Btw, I am not that much older than you, I'm 18 and I've learned this stuff over the last few years and my parents always told us about the not being able to do things and that they taught themselves how to cook and take care of themselves as adults, which you will learn later on. If you set your own goals, your life will become more meaningful to you. I have more free time now than ever and I spend it doing what I want, I learned how to play guitar, acouple different languages, how to dance, somewhat how to fight, learn how to drive, and watch cartoons. Also you just have to set your own time schedule especially for important events and due dates.

when I watch these videos I just want to have a conversation with you! anyways but yeah I get the structure thing, I need tasks to do, I think you're gonna do well. I have found this troubling during the summer but it can be great practice for the future. I wish you well. And there are so many activities in Uni I think you'll definitely find things to keep you busy. And growing up into an adult with more responsibilities and autonomy over my own life and how I function in society? terrifying but at the same time, I'm so very excited. I want to learn how to do taxes, I want to learn how to go grocery shopping and even I had to grow up really quickly because of certain circumstances, there's so much I haven't experienced yet. Also, I'm so psyched to start conversations that don't start with an adult talking down to me trying to teach me something, but then realize I'm "oh! so mature!" or "such an intelligent kid!" as if young adults can't have normal conversations with other adults with actual contributions to a conversation. I know I have a lot to learn, but we all do, every single one of us. and everyone and anyone can learn from someone else no matter their age. I look forward to learning, and that's what growing up is eh? as for growing old. I think I like the concept. I hope I get there one day and I bet you'll be a really cool old man as I hope I will be too! have a good day mate! (or night, whenever you're reading this I suppose)

If unable to sprint, run. if unable to run, walk. If unable to walk, crawl. Whatever happens, continue progressing forward. That’s what I tell myself when I get in that particular zone we each know well.
You know, I share many thoughts with you. Growing up and even to this day I allow myself to believe that I’m the only one that thinks like myself. But you remind me that isn’t true because you and I think alike. I admire your maturity and confidence in putting yourself out there. Haha, you don’t see me putting this kind of content on my channel, hell, I seldom say anything in the videos I put up. I can tell you’ve come a long way in your life, and I know for sure I have. That’s what really counts.

Okay. I honestly love this video. It's just... I'm as old as you and I experience very much the same things (though I'm not as far as you yet, still hella confused about gender and kinda school-phobic) but the future thing. You're exactly saying the things that I feel and that is just... it's a good feeling to know that you're not the only one to struggle with these things, but also I'm desperately looking for a way out of this "what the hell how do I do future I don't want this". The problem is, I'm pretty anxious about school and I... ugh. I really don't want to start telling all my problems now, lol.
I just wanted to let you know that I very much love this video and I'm probably gonna watch it more than one time.
Also: I, too, want to help people (you call it work with people, but I just... really want to make a (good) difference, you know?) but the problem is, I'm really shy and not sociable and a living mess and I can't even talk properly when I'm nervous - which I always am, so....
Gosh, I just don't know and I'm so confused and now I'm in an existential crisis again. Yay.
What is this comment. I'm sorry.

Hey. I came out as genderfluid to my parents today. My mum is 100% accepting and is letting me get my hair cut soon. My dad says he accepts me but is refusing to let me change my hairstyle and told me if I do he will ground me and take away all privileges I have (phone, horse riding club, etc). On Monday my best friend is going to secretly take me to get it done and we aren’t going to tell him. Being punished a lot but being happy with how I look is much better than feeling suicidal and wanting to self harm again because I’m stuck looking feminine. Wish me luck! 😄 I’m also out to everyone around me now so yayyyyy :)

6:30 Kovu, finding friends at uni was SO much easier for me than finding friends in school. I went into uni thinking I wouldn't make any friends cause it had been hard for me in school but people were so much nicer and they shared my interests and I found a great friend group and a couple of really close friends. (I'm in my 9th semester already now, I've had these friends for a while now)

I started studying some weeks ago and I was really worried that I would be alone. But believe me, it is so easy, even for introvert/shy persons like me, to find new people! I was really surprised, but it just happens somehow. I guess the reason is, that nearly everyone is new and alone and wants to get to know new people. Also you and the people that study the same thing as you already have something in common, that makes it a bit easier to find something to talk about. Oh and it can be helpful to run around wearing merch xD (I had so many conversations about Harry Potter, 'caus I am wearing a Potter-themed neckless ^-^)

    Dear Kovu,
let me start with a saying: "things do not usually happen quite as one expects them to". And that´s a good news. I do understand that you are reflect who you will be in the future, but be aware who you are right now and where you come from is as important who you will become as what you do next.
From the little glimpse you share by this canal with us (thanks for that) I can say you are on the right way. Try not to worry to much about what ´s coming next, here and now is the right place to live your life, tomorrow is coming anyway! I know this are easy words to say and it could be unthinkable to accept but it´s reality.
By the way I asume Uni in Norway wound be much different from Germany. Yes you will have more choices and yes you will meet more people but in the end it is mostly quite structured and small groups form naturally and if an extraordinary introverted queer fellow like me found friends for life, you can do the same.
Oh, and yes I´m much older...

Kovu I am a 56 year old heart surgeon in the U.S.. You will find that University is a far more accepting and welcoming place than high school. You may not see it yet but you will grow and mature a lot in the next 4 to 5 years. I have been following both of your channels. Your will find that your friends and your accepting circle will widen. Not only old ladies but you too will be less self conscious and more self confident as you have more successes in your life. You are already more self aware than most. Yes I do see you having a family and spouse and your desires will change I promise but yes that is not what you are thinking about. Yes love will come your way I promise but as you have said before self acceptance will come but I can assure you - YOU HAVE A GREAT REASON TO BE HERE! You will have a lot of things coming your way in the next few years that will be very exciting. Take advice from an old person relax a little and let it come cause there is so much a beautiful person like yourself has to offer to someone else. You will figure out eventually what you want to study but take some advice from someone that has had students for years open yourself to subjects that you never thought about and take a class like anthropology, geology, behavioral psychology, art history, architecture etc because something will interest you or excite you that you never thought of. I know one thing for sure and that is you are who you are for a reason and your here for a reason and half the fun of growing into adulthood is discovering things about yourself that you only find out as your mature into a young adult. Just my two cents for what its worth. I will continue to follow your journey with great interest!!

You are still young, you aren't going to know what you want to do with the rest of your life at 16. I know I didn't, it will take time. Don't be scared of the future though, it will all work out later on down the road, even a few years from now. Every teen/kid feels this way, at times I still do too. I'm 18 and in my first year of college and trying to figure out what I want to do in life.

Kovu: I'm one of your 'older' followers. Every time I watch a video, like this, from you, I'm in a very contemplative mood. Sometimes I think you are a lot older and have great wisdom, I don't remember ever being like that at your age. Then I see the little kid in you as you end and say good bye. What is not to like about Kovu. You're a lot like me, so I can see myself in you. Mark.

I'm 17 too, and thinking of my future definitely freaks me out. I don't even know what my future will be like, and I don't know if I can ever get to the point that I'm comfortable in this body. Nothing is easy for me, esp living in a lgbt unfriendly country. But I often remind myself that it's no use at all worrying about the things unknown. I really hope that my effort won't turn out to be vain.

Hey Kovu I need help, have you got any advice for figuring out your gender identity I have been a girl my whole life so part of me is fine with it but the other half just wants to be a boy and live in peace, but what if I transition and that’s not what I want and then I stuff everything up

you can always just try living as a boy like changing the way you dress and style your hair and how people adress you etc. and wait on doing irreversible changes so you can figure it out and still go back without a problem if you realise it's not you

So for me I'm the same as in I don't see myself living with anyone as in a love interest. My sibling might live with me if they chose. But for the most part I just see myself and a beard dragon as my pet plus a few plants. also with kids I'm the same, if I do decide to have kids they are going to be adopted, (I made that decision when I was 10 yr old, years before I even knew I was trans) and teens. Because teens get less likely change of getting adopted because of there age. I moved back to my hometown and I'm know what career I'm going in. But I also know that my career and life paths and go through some detours or even change. I want to become and do so many things and it's up to me to make them happen. Life is hard, believe me I know. But for every person out there, you can become what and who you want to be. If you told me three years ago that I would be living in my own place and socializing with others, I would have thought you were a liar. because when your in that dark head space, you don't see past the present. You don't see a future but if you hold, just hold on, you can become the person you want to be. There is this quote that I love "Sometimes things don't get better, but YOU get STRONGER". Stay Strong and do things that make YOU HAPPY.

I don’t really know what I want to do I think i’m going to go into psychology maybe. I’ve never really been able to see the person i want to be when i’m older I just know I want to be happy and to finally get out of this fricking closet!!!

How is a 17 year old this wise? To think through the future and make plans already. I wish I was like that. I'm not an outgoing person either but I had a good group of friends in my 20s. We all connected through our shared love of the same bands. We were all emo, ha. We met online at first and met up at gigs. So my advice to you is to pick a favourite subject and try to meet people through that. Stay connected to LGBT groups and meet up at events. That is my plan and I'd be doing it now if it wasn't for my social anxiety. I'm sure you will still have your friends you have now.
You must be quite gifted, even the existentialism. It's common in gifted children to feel that way.

I feel like as i grow older i am expected to be more of certain things, like confident, independent and that sort of stuff, but i am a little bit scared because i feel like i haven’t accomplished much of that, what if i stay like this as an adult? There are a lot of things of things i want to be, similarly to you, wise and calm, but i feel depressed when i see that right now im not very strong in that sense:(

And i just don't know how to react to that, like we were not in the same school and didn't saw us for a year or so even though we live in the same town. I'm not really sad and that bothers me. I feel bad because i don't feel anything regarding him...but now i'm also overthinking like what am i doing with my life, just sitting at home, going to school and then? I have no clue what to do in the future. I don't see any realistic goal to archieve. i feel pointless too and I'm aware that my life can end at any time, it's just not in my hands.
