  • As everyone was taking photos from onboard the PS Waverley this week, we decided to go and visit the remains of the PS Ryde.
PS Ryde was commissioned and run by Southern Railway as a passenger ferry between mainland and the Isle of Wight from 1937 to 1969, with an interlude during the Second World War where she served as a minesweeper and then an anti-aircraft ship, seeing action at D-Day.
In 1970 she was purchased by two Isle of Wight entrepreneurs, cousins Alan and Colin Ridett, for £12,000. After a two-year refit costing £60,000 and involving the removal of her boiler, she was fitted with eighteen luxury cabins, a restaurant, bar and dance-floor, and was renamed the Ryde Queen Boatel by Miss Great Britain 1971.

I rode on this ship as an eight year old boy on holiday in 1960. When I last saw her in 1982 I was with my own children. She was in quite a state then. It is very sad to see her now.

Remember her crossing the Solent to Portsmouth. then as the Ryde Queen use to go dancing there on a Saturday night back in the 70s, shame should never of been allowed to end like this

Yeah, I remember going to the Ryde Queen in the 70's, had good nights there, and if I remember you were able to walk around the preserved engine room, all the brass was polished and shiney, its a shame no-one was willing to save it ,such a waste of a beautiful boat

It's an ode to the British Empire and the crumbling remains of the time when you could dare to dream.
That ship would have been built with pride and sweat by real men when H&S would have had heart attacks watching.
The whole way of life is crumbling alongside. It's such a shame we allow so much to be lost across the country.

I remember seeing her 50 years ago the deterioration is shocking, I remember my cousin and I cracking that old joke about what is brown and steaming and comes out of Cowes backwards. A great shame no one could be bothered to restore her back then, I guess all the steam enthusiasts were too busy playing trains.

Such a shame to see what's happened to her. Probably ready for the scrapyard now I imagine.
I heard a nice idea on a Facebook post a while ago saying that if the wreck is scrapped then perhaps the prow of the ship with the nameplates could be salvaged and moved elsewhere (Ryde beach was suggested) and used as a viewing platform or monument?

Such a shame that they couldn't restore her, and that she was left to rot. Is it still possible to see today, or was she scrapped?

It’s a sad sight to see what could have been a lovely paddle steamer go to rot, I enjoy getting around the Scottish islands on the Waverley, 👍

    Notice the Funnel missing?
It was apparently blown down in a gale? With the help of course of some ropes and a JCB pulling it.
This entire set up has all the hall marks of some very under the counter dealings. Little wonder that the name Dominic WhiteChapel has been involved.
But give this some thought? Why has it been left there for so long? Of course it cannot possibly be anything to do with it's former usage on the site meaning there would not be so many issues in removing it and building a hotel? Just my thoughts, no facts, would anyone bet against it?

She was a Solent steamer, running along the south coast from places like Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight.
She was withdrawn in 1970, spent a few years on the Thames before being laid up where she still resides and turned into a nightclub and hotel. She's been slowly deteriorating since 1989. Her Funnel collapsed in 2006 but the rest of her was still in reasonable condition. The bridge collapsed in 2012 and she's just got worse every year since as you can see in the video. Several attempts have been made to preserve her over the years, but nothing came of any of them.
That's a very brief summary. Look up PS Ryde and you'll find a lot more info about her :)

shame she's been left to rot i think 20 years ago there would have been a chance for restoration, but not now... she's too far gone.

I appreciate the sentiment but this is pollution and sadly all too typical of the marine industry. Yes, it's a sad old scene - now clear up the damn mess

Unfortunately you are spot on, I can remember seeing in the new year on her in the late 80's, probably the last new year she seen with people on board. If the hull was intact I'd say restore her but she's beyond that & should be scrapped..
