Hey DrMatt357 - thank you so much! I've been struggling for years with cheap hones, and pulled the trigger on a Coticule a couple of years ago thinking it would solve all my problems. I had exactly the same issues as you using slurry like it says in the instruction! I just watched your 3 part series, and tried it again with no slurry, and have just experienced my best shave from any previous hones. I feel I'm on the right track thanks to you, still got a lot to learn, but wow, this is a step change for me! Regards from the UK.

Cheers. I'm experimenting with a little trans Ark following other finishers...seems to produce pretty nice results. FWIW, stumbling on these videos inspired me to pick up my first coticule from Jarrod. Will definitely try the slurry-less technique when I get the stone. Thanks for sharing these videos.

You've forgotten Part IV: THE SHAVE ! Yes, I know that you've posted a link in another video where you can see a shave by your friend, but I 'd love to see YOUR shave with the YOUR cuticle technique. It would be really cool!! XD
I ended up with a coticule in a box of oil stones from a old tool box. I had no idea what I had and used it as a fine grit oil stone for all of my hand tools. Never understood why my edges ended up so nice. A little time in the dishwasher pulled the oil out and it works great in water now.
Hi Dr Matt. Thanks for making this series definitely did learn a thing or 2 about using my coticules. Speaking of cheating, I do sometimes go from a coticule to a Jnat with very light slurry. I believe that the entire progression does somewhat reflect the finish. For example. When I do a one stone hone using my Mikawa nagura set followed by a tomo the edge is a lot more comfortable than just doing a synthetic progression then tomo nagura. Also I have a 7 Jnat progression from soft to hard, when I use that, again it's different. I wouldn't be good at explaining the exact theory but I believe that each progression plays a small part in the finish after a bit of experimenting, I found that the edges look slightly different too on different progressions with the same finisher. dr matt, if I would have to choose between an ILR or a coticule which stone would it be? For optimal use, what are the ideal measurements for a finishing stone? (in mm or cm?)

Chris Picking - The Trans Ark. I bought from an individual. Don't know of any vendors that have them. The one I have is a vintage one sold by Norton. They're out there. Check eBay.
They polish as they abrade or cut!! They are slow but they are a hell of a finisher!! It just takes about 75 more laps, and it beats the hell out of a coticle!!

I know many guys who use oil. It works fine. I just find it a bit messy and the clean up is a pain.

I use the suehiro 20k after any finishing stone and it does improve naturals and synthetics

I'm curious...how far do you go on the Arkansas after your coticule edge?
Only 20-30 passes as it gets really sticky. You can add a drop of dish soap and that will get you even further.

After Bruno if you want. These are just a few things some people do to go even further than running water.
I know you put up your email a while ago, I just want to make sure you're still ok with it
A car shampoo would have a much higher lubricating ratio than dish soap if you wanna try something weirder

going to finish watching this but the smith honing oils is terrible product that should not be used on the stones.
Kyle Kelly Don't know about the Smith oils but this is a water based product that rinses right off.
