I like to come back to this song every now and then. Despite knowing the lyrics, it always feels like the first time I listen to it. It’s a unique feeling for me.
Imagine Thomas playing one of these lullaby versions live, then out of the blue, the tempo rises, the volume doubles, and the rest of the band appears from the darkness behind him just in time to play the chorus. That would make a sweet scene at a live show.
I bought Night into the Woods back then because of this music video. Stunning stuff. Finally got around to doing a full playthrough.. And the bridge of this song, man.. The shapes..
This song came out at a time in my life where I really needed it. I would listen to it on repeat, over and over again for months. 5 years later, this song still hits me so hard. Thank you
Thank you for sending this song to me, Tyler. Could not believe my last goodbye to you was yesterday. I hope you are at peace... Thank you for helping me fight for my life and through the blood, sweat and tears. Thinking of you... x
The aesthetics to this music video are just spot on. The colours and the contrasts are fantastic. The art style is beautifully original, and it just works with the song so well. Just on a visual level.
The first time I saw this I thought the shadow with the red particle's was the dead girl, but after a few watches I've realized that it was the photographer. He was haunted by the image of the dead girl, and the inevitability of his own death. He's sick. He doesn't have long. One day he doubles over outside his regular diner, his life flashes before his eyes. He stands at deaths door. But it's not his time. His eyes open and he starts stumbles forward, but his friend catches him before he's hit by the car. They go back to coffee like nothing happened. I fucking love this video
I don't see him as sick. I see him as unable to come to terms with his own mortality. I see his stumbling more as a mental thing rather than a physical one due to illness.
I just realized something. The photographer bought the camera after coming home from the war, everything up until that point showed a broken man until that moment when he first saw the camera in the shop and just used it to take simple picture, it was something that brought him out of the war and back to enjoying life; yet sometime down the road he became a crime scene photographer, the hobby that took his mind off his days of violence just brought him right back to it.
And he stepped into traffic to kill himself but his buddy he served with pulled him to safety and was there to talk with him all night at the cafe to make sure he was safe. So much in this video, the premise would make an incredible movie. The importance of friends and community to our mental health, the importance of love and support. This video makes me cry every time
@@Scam_Likely. i don't really see war here. I see a girl who died, possibly from a car crash or something, and a photographer who witnessed it, possibly accidentally. I'm not even really sure he witnessed it, it could be that the girl was photographed and then appeared in a newspaper headline or something. Either way, the man clearly doesn't take the reminder of his own mortality well and has a panic attack, eventually finding his way into the street. To me, the art implies that he didn't really intend on going into the street, he just had a panic attack and wasn't paying much attention to his surroundings. Fortunately, a friend or acquaintance of some kind saves him from getting run over. I don't see the photographer as being ill or suffering PTSD from a war or anything, just not able to come to terms with the memento mori of the girl's death. Maybe a look at how he envisions the afterlife or people who have accepted death or crowds who aren't listening to him. I used to (and still sometimes) get nightly panic attacks and terrors over thinking of death and mortality. It shakes me so badly I sit up in a horrified sweat.. man when i first listened to it i never thought of the lyrics because it was the streetlight version i just vibing but after hearing and reading the lyrics its a pretty depressing song
Hello. I posted here a long time ago. I come back to this song sometimes, it gives me the most comforting feeling about death. And I know streetlight manifesto have their own more upbeat version of this, but I can't help but feel like the original version does the feeling the most justice. It truly incapsulates humanity's relationship with death in the best way I have ever seen.
Spoke to him last week(that was a good night). The record deal he signed is (somehow) for 4 albums ONLY by streetlight that are ONLY new material, however they own any music he produces ASWELL. It seems its finally going to turn into a legal battle. In short, they seem to think that they own his soul.

People talk to me about the afterlife and there I am, with the existential dread of feeling that there's nothing after. I really wish I had that, to feel better about this
By far my favorite song on The Hand(s) that Thieve(s) . Streetlight opened with this last month in St.Pete at the show I went to. Everything got live real fast in there.
So for the third time I have come across another version of one of my favourite songs, can't believe I never heard this, it's so funny knowing every lyric when the song is layed out a little differently.
I did a paper on this song. Considering they referenced Camus in other songs, it seems to me that this song is somewhat about Absurdism. Pretty interesting concept
I don't think the guy is even a crime scene photographer. He took the photos on the bridge above the police and in his development room there were labels that said "Press". It seemed more like he got a bad assignment and it triggered a number of horrible thoughts, memories and emotions.

Streetlight wrote the songs for The Hands that Thieve under a contract with Victory. It is probable that Victory controls these songs' legal status and wouldn't want others to profit off of them.
in February 2012, Streetlight Manifesto went so far as to request that their fans boycott their music.[wiki] Streetlight Songs were written by toh kay (thomas kalnoky) and sold as intellectual asset to victory records from catch 22's first album to hands that thieves apparently being the last album with victory. We can only guess they will only be releasing with pentimento(founded by toh kay to re-release a call to arms in 2007 wich i dont think happened
It deals with all of the peoples' souls; those whose bodies have gone away, but not their ''inner core.'' Some people believe that the souls of those deceased also have some ability to ''affect'' what happens in the world of the living. In plain though, TL;DR: You'll always have to live with the choices you've made and the consequences that become of them
I doubt they'll see this, but, if Victory Records wants to have any sort of good will towards them kept, they'll let Toh Kay release the acoustic album and let the wicked gang be on its way. If not, it will come back to bite them in the ass one day.
The Hand That Thieve was Streetlights last album on their contract, so as a nice little fuck you to victory they released the Toh Kay version independently. Victory sued, demanded Toh Kay album be halted or Thomas had to sign over all the rights to victory, and they refused to ship the Streetlight album too.Last time I checked the album was still unreleased, the Toh Kay album has been suspended indefinitely. I really hope this gets cleared up before I see them in October so I can actually buy it
Also within a day or two of this video being released Victory pulled it from youtube, soundcloud, or anywhere else they could find (which is why I re-uploaded it)
A few months ago I wanted to end myself. I went to an institution and got help. I'm not at 100% but Faith helps. And this chorus oh this chorus. I love it so much and it gives me hope.
I hope I wasn't the only one who noticed, but the off-note at the end on the song (the one that doesn't sound right) is supposed to be a reflection of the lyrics; second guessing the choices that we've made. He is a genius.
Indeed, people are pissed off because Victory won't let Tom release it except through them. Upshot of that being he cancelled the release. Victory, classy guys that they are, are currently refusing to provide any copies of the Streetlight album for them to sell in the Risc store, too.
Too bad this verse: "And I don't care if the ship sinks, and we drown, we can drown or if the plane crashes straight into the ground, to the ground as long as I had a chance to close my eyes had a moment to realize that it was time, it was time, it was time" is not in this video.
also helps with the pacing and the overall structure of the video since the animator doesn't have to deal with what happens during an additional verse and chorus in the narrative of the music video
You're correct BUT if they songs are under streetlight manifesto then they could technically control what he does with them with Toh Kay. Especially if the label has the rights then forget it they don't have much of a choice.
They still claimed musical property since it's the same song. That's why it's an awesome "fuck you" to them that he releases this on the same day on Pentimento.
Victory says Toh Kay's companion album will "cannibalize" the sales of the Streetlight album so they're not releasing it. But that album completes their contract, so they're no longer with Victory. Pirate the albums, buy merch from the RISC store, and minimize Victory's profits
@DangerousMuteLunatic lol yeah I know all that, but I'm pretty sure Toh Kay isn't with Victory and Tomas does want people to buy the Toh Kay album. I believe they only wanted fans to boycott the Streetlight album.
so, uh... Crime scene photographer's story is pretty straightforward (and really cool), but.. has anyone got any solid theories 'bout the lil' sideways-blinking guys with holes in their hands that found themselves stuck in some kinda landscape that reminds me of the PS3 game Journey? cause.. as long as I had a chance to close my eyes
had a moment to realize
that it was time, it was time, it was time"
is not in this video.
+Hummler it isn't??! i never noticed.
Well, the missing verse is actually in the song on the Toh Kay album, thus is it added since it is not in the Streetlight Manifesto version.
sometimes verses are removed for the sake of a music video, I'm not sure why but from what I've seen it's not uncommon
For this video it might be because the process of making a 5 minute animation can take a lot of time and money so they made it a shorter song
also helps with the pacing and the overall structure of the video since the animator doesn't have to deal with what happens during an additional verse and chorus in the narrative of the music video
Thanks man, this song is really great. It's too bad such a great band has such a crappy Recording Studio behind it
You're correct BUT if they songs are under streetlight manifesto then they could technically control what he does with them with Toh Kay. Especially if the label has the rights then forget it they don't have much of a choice.
Is this song on Amazon Music? I can't find it anywhere.
ooh, thank you, i didn't fully understand.
cheers mate.
rest in peace.
Don't know why everyone is saying this is scary, it just made me sad.
They still claimed musical property since it's the same song. That's why it's an awesome "fuck you" to them that he releases this on the same day on Pentimento.
Victory Records: killing music since my emo/scene phase
Does anyone know where you can get this version?
This Video is fucking awesome
Victory says Toh Kay's companion album will "cannibalize" the sales of the Streetlight album so they're not releasing it. But that album completes their contract, so they're no longer with Victory. Pirate the albums, buy merch from the RISC store, and minimize Victory's profits
So I just heard about this album, and it probably took so long because Victory records made it impossible to hear about.
@DangerousMuteLunatic lol yeah I know all that, but I'm pretty sure Toh Kay isn't with Victory and Tomas does want people to buy the Toh Kay album. I believe they only wanted fans to boycott the Streetlight album.
On Repeat.
colorful...
So uh, where does the soul go when we die?
WiiThoko I'd prefer the mystery remain unexplained, my friend.
so, uh... Crime scene photographer's story is pretty straightforward (and really cool), but.. has anyone got any solid theories 'bout the lil' sideways-blinking guys with holes in their hands that found themselves stuck in some kinda landscape that reminds me of the PS3 game Journey? cause.. I've got nothin' >.>;.
