Capacitor Tester, Neon Lamp

  • This is a well built, safe to use, capacitor tester using a neon lamp. It is good for paper, mylar, ceramic and mica capacitors. Not for electrolytics. It is a simple project with good results. The device will last a lifetime. Sorry I misspelled TESTER in the video.

      People have been building this type tester for 80 years or more. Nothing new.

    why isn't it good for electrolytics please explain

      Electrolytics have some conductive nature and will always make the lamp glow. Electrolytics have to be tested by other means. Their value can be read with a LCR meter if the capacitor is good but voltage/current tests reveal more about their condition. The electrolyte material that makes them work will deteriorate over a period of time causing them to fail. Cheaply made ones won't last long. After 20 to 30 years most of them are already failing. When my old O'Scope stopped working I changed all the electrolytics in the unit and it came back to life. They are a plague on old electronic equipment. When I get an old radio the first thing I do is replace all of the electrolytics. In their old age the paper caps are failing also and must be replaced. There are plenty of videos on the subject.

      It's a pity the circuit cannot be modified so as to be able to check electrolytics as well by a switch... but well done just the same.
