Thank you, your videos help me so much, I've burned my life to the ground doing elder care the last 2years for my 86yr old mom then in the last 48 hrs she's got Covid, an Alzheimers diagnosis and broken her hip. I lost my job in January and have been overwhelmed by life, her chronic delerium 24-7, money shortages and my own diagnosis and medication changes. Your videos give me skills and hope. Bless. ❤

I thought I was embarking on a 2-yr. recuperating journey that lasted 17 years. The $33k drop in income, family dynamics, as well as retreating from former friends, as time & class changes. Be sure to keep your health care appointments so that you’re well. Blessings to you ❤

I think those who do not need therapy are not as strong as those who are in some way psychologically injured, but who do the hard and necessary work to overcome it or learn to function with it. Often this work is life long, we may never be 'cured,' instead becoming more mentally and emotionally capable. The alternative is to just feel broken and angry at the people or circumstances that caused it. (What possible benefit can come from that?)
Resilience is a good term. I like the term antifragile. Which Nassim Nicholas Taleb introduced in his book Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder. Can child trauma which leaves you with complexPTSD , after therapy actually end up leaving you uncured, yet stronger? I don't resent my difficult childhood, it made me. It's taken a lot of work and therapy to make me not just be hardened, determined, and unbearable; but strong, optimistic and unstoppable. However, I would never recommend it as a way to raise a child.
Taleb's simile for antifragile, is a muscle. You can develop that muscle with 50 lbs weights, but when it's presented with a 100 lbs, it's able to lift it. As we exercise a muscle we damage the tissue, which our bodies grow back stronger. This is antifragile. A chair can be well made, but the chair will never become stronger than it was the day it was made. A resilient chair may last for centuries but it will never grow stronger through use. Ibram X. Kendi's book How to Be an Antiracist applies this concept to prejudice. The Black Panthers used to talk about the underlying idea, that racism is like a bug in all our minds whether we are for it, against it, or think it isn't there. Only the struggle against it can kill the bug. Kendi made these ideas clearer and easier to grasp. Where these concept meet is, even if what is in you isn't broken, you can still work on it; you should work on it.
I think this is what good therapy, personal reflection and cognitive behavior therapy does for our mind. I knew someone who did something impulsive and violent. He resented that the judge instead of sending him to prison assigned him anger management classes. I didn't understand his resistance. I doubt there's any sign I need anger management classes, but if someone suggested I take them? Sure, why not?

I'm Brazilian and living in Ireland, and have suffered a lot with depression, though haven't gone through it in a long time. I have drastically changed my diet, but it has been through gradual change. I cut out all soda. Only water. Trying to cut out most sugar, etc. I feel quite a bit better. I still have days where I struggle. But I'm improving a lot. I have a therapist I trust. I put myself in therapy and feel like I will stay there for the rest of my life. I know I need help. I DO NOT feel that improving my mental health means that "I'm crazy" or "weak". It's quite the opposite. Love and light to all!

I love Dr. Marks videos. They've been a life line, especially during COVID and for helping me learn so much about what I didn't know I didn't know, if that makes sense. One thing I do notice is that there is an area of mental heath vs. physical health that is often overlooked in these types of videos: Chronic illness & also acute types of illness that can impact your brain's physical & possibly emotional abilities. These techniques are great if you're a "normie" with "normal" life problems, but I'd LOVE to see someone of Dr. Marks' caliber tackle things like how to do or adapt these techniques when you have fibro/CFS, EDS, MS, IBS, sleep apnea, cancer etc. How do you build resilience in those situations? Which techniques are most helpful when dealing with the physical impact on the mind/brain and/or gut impacts of those? And how do you help yourself through such things? It gets incredibly tiring and discouraging to keep being told how "vital" something is to your wellbeing only to have that thing be out of reach for you (due to a medical condition/disease or the medications used to treat a disease.)

They will always be here, and it really is about how you frame it to help recover from it, and for those other life challenges that are here to stay, managing and living through it. But how we frame it to ourselves is what makes the huge difference. I understand it’s an everyday practices that we have the fortune of gifting ourselves and not just spending time in therapy for a period of time to learn to get rid of.

I love that you (& other scientists) are focusing on the benefits of mind-body strategies. However I would just like to add that as someone who is a qualified naturopath, graduating in 2012, the amount of times we had to experience the derision, ridicule and name-calling of "quacks" for advocating the very same recommendations is astounding. I know I sound a bit like "I told you so", but it's important to understand how mindset shifts do take time and just because lots of people disagree doesn't make it wrong. Personally, I love the integration of evidence based combined with natural or mind-body-spirit approaches.

When your 2 steps ahead your a genius, 3 steps and your a crackpot. I hear ya n feel ya, it takes mental fortitude and resiliance to remain genuine to your own knowledge/beliefs and stay the course. The current science/data is catching up to ancient knowledge and reinforcing the facts.

I appreciate your coming focus on resilience at a time when I think my recurrent major depression is returning. It's a feeling of, "oh no, not again," and of knowing that just when my energy and motivation are waning, I should redouble my efforts to engage in the activities that might help me to cope. Also of knowing that it means more medication and side effects and more experiencing and explaining absences and failures. It requires immense effort and resilience to deal with this again and again.

I am so grateful to God for you and the incredible service work you do. Your dedication to educating the public on the importance of mental health and the need for psychiatric or other mental health assistance is truly commendable. Your platform is a treasure, and I believe it should be recognized with a humanitarian award for the positive impact you’re making. Your work has inspired me personally, and because of your sharing, I’ve decided to pursue a career in health and wellness, even beyond my senior years. Your platform is a hidden gem that deserves to reach an even broader audience, and I’m proud to follow you on your social platforms.

This is very exciting!!! I've realized that when you study the goal, it can heal sooooo much no matter what you struggle with. I really think that looking deeply at resilience will help everyone no matter where they're at in their healing journeys. For example when banks were facing the problem of how to identify fake money and when it was becoming a major problem, what they found the most helpful was just teaching the tellers to identify in very meticulous detail what the real deal looks like. They just had to study one thing to identify with no problem all the very different kinds of not real. So while it's very helpful to have a wide variety of info on each different struggle, sometimes you need to focus on the goal and what does healthy really look like, so you know where you're going, so you can much more easily identify what could be holding you back or harming you.

As an I-O (Business) Psychologist who studies toxic work environments, I advocate for I-O and Organization Psychology programs to have a clinical track because research has demonstrated that toxic work environments (TWE) can cause PTSD, personality disorders, anxiety, and depression, and all areas of psychology have a clinical component since psychology studies behavior😁.
