    1. If we are using dark mode for coding I would prefer IPS.

      I think for people that like coding in the evenings etc. or in general prefer the dark editor color theme, it might be even worse on a VA - as I understand, smaller gray-to-gray transitions are even slower and that's precisely what happens in that case - dark editor themes do not use white text on black background, but a combination of colors with lower contrast so that they are more natural for human eyes not evolved for high contrasts in dark environments and don't cause retinal "burn-in" issues.

Personally, I love the clarity (PPI) of the 27" 4K, but it's typically at 60Hz only and require far better CPU and GPU as well since the resolution requires a lot of horsepower.

    Coming from IPS for almost 15 years now and trying VA for once (due to I needed an ultrawide real estate for my work), in coloration: VA is surprisingly tolerable for color work-related purposes, but VA still has its downside esp when it comes to bleed, full black screen, and to others you might even noticed some unevenness (I got lucky my current VA monitor was well-manufactured and its stock calibration is good).
    But if purely for gaming though, VA and IPS doesn't really factor that much to be honest.
    In the end, it can still boils down to the quality of the product: A well-optimized and quality VA monitor is worth considering and can be a good alternative to a decent or average quality IPS monitor.

    Those "deeper blacks" on VA are useless in my opinion, because you must increase your brightness so you have less black smearing because of VA's technology. Any movement on a VA panel messes things up; for instance, if you have a star dotted sky and the scene moves, the stars dissapear while the camera moves, because the black pixels take too long to change from black to a color. I use a 34 inch ultrawide 2k VA display for working, general computer usage and gaming. Its fine for casual use but for gaming is not that good, and sometimes my mouse dissapears while everything is still normal on my older TN display.

    • @nerd20fromdiscord
      @nerd20fromdiscord 3 месяца назад

      Increasing brightness will not reduce the black smearing much at all but decreasing contrast will, and yes your correct decreasing contrast makes black into grey but it also makes a va panel not literally hurt your eyes while using it, i am currently the owner of a va panel and i run it at half of the stock contrast settings in nvidia control panel to make it even slightly usable

    In this 30 years of my PC crusade I had a lot of monitors, IPS, TN, VA... and now I'm using Philips 165Hz 32" VA panel. And yes, it has smearing but I'm not annoyed about that. In most games smearing isn't so noticeable - only if you are looking maniacally for that. What I like and prefer over other monitors are really deeper blacks and non-existence of GLOWING of IPS (you forget to mention that) and, the most important: richer colors and saturation. VA panels (especially Philips' ones) are capable of more vivid colors and that's game changer for me.

With high gamma the colours were worse than on my old TN benq esports monitor. On my IPS monitor I can turn up the gamma really high and the colours stay vibrant. Eh, smearing while coding in a dark mode (Well, in my experience a dark grey background) isn't the worst on a VA. It's not bad enough that I can't scroll through my code quickly to identify the blocks I'm looking for, and most of the time the image is static. I have a PLS, IPS and VA in my monitor setup and my main coding window usually lives on my VA because the smearing doesn't effect it's functionality.

I couldn't find an RL way to test VA black smear so I relied on videos like this from reviewers and other PC gamer's opinions. The panel shown here must be one of the worst for black smearing, the scrolling dark mode almost convinced me not to get VA at all. The G7 is known as the best VA panel period so of course that one doesn't have it. I had bought an insanely expensive VA monitor back around 2004, an EIZO, i forget how much it was. I returned it right away due to VA black smear. It was pungent, sticky. Since i program and engineer and need to scroll through insane amounts of text, text becoming completely illegible during scrolling was not acceptable, and it was affecting black text on white background too. This was before Overdrive was invented though. I hoped these things would have gotten better by now.

    This is a good comparison, but I still think it's a little unfair. VA monitors does have smearing because pixels have lower response time and the alligment doesn't help, but have significantly better blacks. Also IPS suffers from heavy Back light bleeding and glow, almost as hard as the smearing on a VA, maybe your IPS has a good control on that issue or the recording does help mitigate it. But as VA can't get rid of smearing (helps to tune your monitor with included settings), IPS can't get rid of glow/blb. To me having used both, I still choose a good VA with good settings, as I always play on a dark room, can't tolerate bleeding.
