I'm not the one who noticed it first, but I agree with the sentiment : The Machine adding zeroes to Sameen's probability of survival was definitely an emotional response, a purely "rational" AI would've immediately put 0% and discarded her. The Machine did not want Sameen to die and did everything until the last second to try and save her.
From season 1 to this episode was an exponential increase is quality, from a procedural crime drama to a sci-fi masterwork. I feel bad for everyone who stopped at s1, they missed out on this journey big time 🤭
Finch taught the machine to value every piece equally, which is why it didn't predict Shaw's gambit at the end. The winning move was a Queen sacrifice.

I love this episode, definitely one of the best PoI episodes. "Why not? We're in a simulation." 😆 But the entire episode also *does* illustrate just how well The Machine really does know each one of it's people. Oh gods, this season's finale breaks me every time. But we're only halfway there, let's gooo! :T
I remember this episode. I was shocked with the first simulation when Finch died. After that I felt we were safe. And then they killed Sameen. I bawled.
She was taught not to value or prefer a chess piece, or the life of one individual over the other. She was taught tactical sacrifice when absolutely necessary. She was still looking for valid options till the very end. She didn’t factor the odds of Shaw reaching there on time. The Machine gave herself the odds of 2.07% success rate (averaged over 4 lives) for saving all her assets, interface and admin combined. She was built this way for a reason. Harold killed every iteration of the Machine in her infancy, where she imprinted on him over others. Yet, she taught herself to care. She had to, else all her optioneering would have been futile. It took Harold a while to understand and anthropomorphise his creation. His child in essence. For 7 years, he raised her as one. And she too learnt her lessons well, both in Chess and the moral parameters he imbued in her. She knew she couldn’t imprint on Sameen at the cost of those others. And the Machine had way too much respect in her for human Free Will, even though she refused to abandon them until the very bitter end.
Oh, that's cool but a shame to lose her character for a bit. However, I do like the direction the story took and what they did with it, so it worked out well to be honest.
What Queen Isabella didn't consider was that by making the queen the best piece, it was also made the piece everyone wants to kill♟ We're in trouble. The Machine has learned what fanfiction is👩❤💋👨

Damn, That is such a good thing to notice!
So crazy! Makes me even sadder for the ending.

Just got better and better, such an amazing show that definitely deserves more love!

He taught it too well!
top 5 episode no question.
can't help but agree ... I saw the title and shouted out loud 'top five, if not number one!" ... was looking forward to this one
It's so good!

IRL, Sarah Shahi was pregnant with twins, so Shaw had to be written out of the storyline. But the possibility of her return was left open.

Ooooof this episode still hurts🥲 Still a great episode
Really does, but it's so amazing.
In hindsight, a lot in common with The Good Place 2x03 (the reboots)
Never seen The Good Place! One day hopefully can check it out.
