    No matter how many times I've seen this movie, it always shreds my heart and leaves me in tears.
    "I dreamed you were wandering in the dark, and so was I. We found each other. We found each other in the dark."
    That line always has me bawling, this is such an emotionally draining movie but it's also so masterfully done.

    The implication is that John was an angel. Remember when his attorney says it seems like he just dropped out of the sky? That’s also why John comments during the film “They’s just like angel up in Heaven.” John knows what both angels and Heaven are like.

  • @jmhaces
    @jmhaces 2 года назад +216

    John Coffey was tired after Del's execution because he used his power to take away some of Del's pain, since he was suffering so much on the chair due to Percy's psycho actions. That's why he said he could feel it and so could Mr. Jingles because he was with him.
    John Coffey himself is a Christ figure, and just like in Christian mythology the centurion who pierced Christ's side with his spear while he was being unjustly executed by the government on the cross was cursed with immortality, Paul sees himself as cursed with unnatural long life for allowing John Coffey to die on the electric chair, even if John Coffey himself asked him to do it because he was tired of how awful people were to each other.

    As far as who John Coffey is, an interviewer asked him, "Having the character with the initials J.C. isn't very subtle," and King responded, "I wasn't aware I was supposed to be subtle." Also, I do have to say this is one of the few times I actually like the movie more than the book. The only other movie I can think of is Forrest Gump, which was a horrible book and not worth reading, but the movie was amazing. And I'm not saying King's book was bad, it's just the story works better the way it was filmed.

      Trick is to not humanize them. It's incredibly hard not to give depth to a character as you build them up, even those you set out to make as monsters. In Percy's case, there was no fall from grace. All you see is all he is. He is evil in a truly one-dimensional, childish way.
      I don't remember the book well now, but the movie really hammers it in. Every single scene with Percy is exposition of his awfulness. There's no rest, there's no pause, so that at the end when he is shuffled into the mental institute all you can feel is the most bitter type of pity for him. A monster wearing the suit of a man, locked up inside himself for the rest of his days.

      You can read many of his books, and just read them as one shot, but if you read them again AFTER reading the dark tower series, you will see all the little links spreads here and there connecting many of his books to the dark tower.

  • @NateKyng
    @NateKyng 2 года назад +2

    So there's a lot of biblical references here, allow me to break em down from the convos I've had about the movie over the years.
    1. Mr. Jingles represents humankind under God's eye; a small glimmer of light and joy in a world of chaos. Tho on a side note, the one who kept him was Delacroix, and Croix is French for Cross, so some say he represents the Cross and how despite his evil crimes, we as the viewers enjoy his character, because of his love for Mr. Jingles, showing his true nature and that through the cross, we are forgiven for our sins; us feeling sympathy for him is us forgiving him.
    2. The four guards represent the four centurions who accompanied Jesus to the cross & executed Him (not because they wanted to, but because it was their "job"). Some have argued that they're the 4 horsemen too.
    3. The Warden represents Judas, as he still signs the death warrant that kills John Coffey despite that he saved his wife's life.
    4. John's public defender represents Pontius Pilate, for his indifference towards John and sending an innocent man to prison/death penalty, much like Pontius did to Jesus.
    5. Percy represents the evil of mankind; the pettiness, the pride, the greed, lust for power, corruption etc.
    6. Wild Bill Wharton (the one who actually hurt the little girls) represents the Devil; pure evil. Which when Coffey kills him, it's the light overpowering darkness, which is what most believe.
    7. Tom Hanks' character is named Paul, who in the Bible was one of the main leaders in the early foundations of Christianity (Paul, the Apostle) following Jesus' death.
    8. And, of course, Coffey represents Christ...who was executed despite not doing anything wrong, judged by the prejudices held by humans, who couldn't understand his gift.
    Of course, this is all left up to discussion...but it's what I take from it.

    I agree with you on people asking, "How are you?", "how's it going?". Generally, there is no genuine empathy involved. For a lot of people, it has become a greeting like hi or, hello, They don't really want to know. If you answer honestly people tend to move on as fast as possible. So it creates a situation where most people lie with responses, "I'm fine.", "Good". If you return the question most respond similarly. Few people feel comfortable answering truthfully, "It's a bad day, and false sympathy is just another annoyance added to my day, Thanks for that.".

    To answer your question about making somebody happy (lying) etc. I’ve had to bring somebody to peace as they were dying until they’d passed on.
    He was an old friend of mine, made his fair share of mistakes in life bless him but he started to turn a new leaf and start a better chapter of his life when he became terminally sick with cancer.
    Never got to see his little girl or make up for his time in prison and all the things he’d done wrong, one day while he was at home he collapsed and he told the hospital staff he wanted me to come and say goodbye.
    Truth of the matter is he told me he didn’t want to die alone, as he started slipping away all he asked was if his little girl knew that he loved her, I told him yes even though her mum told her that her dad had died when she was born.
    He had one last cry and gave me one last hug, said thank you and quietly passed away holding my hand.
    Stuff like that isn’t something you ever forget but I’m just glad I could put an old friend at peace.
