Congratulations on 200k! I’m truly thrilled for you Sherry! I have watched you since the beginning, and look forward to watching your videos every week. Your creativity is just amazing! I was happy to hear that you went to college in my home state. It’s so different now, you wouldn’t recognize it. I received my heart trivet last week, and just love it! Your handwritten notes always make me feel special, and I want to thank you for that. It’s like getting a package from a friend. Cheers to you and your continued success!💜🥂🍾

Thank you so much! Frugal is a much nicer word than cheap, isn’t it?!

    • @tamaraliscia3408
      @tamaraliscia3408 6 месяцев назад +1

I agree. Frugal isn't just a nicer word; it has meaning, as does "cheap" (cheapskate) and "spendthrift". Frugal is in the middle of a bell shaped curve, while cheapskate and spendthrift are at opposite ends. We are frugal in most areas, never spendthrifts ... I just cannot.
My biggest problem is I have never liked to shop for anything though I did for a time after the sudden death of my husband. I got back to myself. However, for too many years I have a hard time spending money, but I'm not cheap. I always buy very good shoes and they're always expensive but they keep my feet in good condition and support my body very well because both are a necessity. On the other hand, I'm never going to spend $50.00 on a long sleeve tshirt.
I enjoy repurposing an item or furniture piece. And have little issue buying supplies to complete a project. While it saves money I enjoy the process of rehabbing a piece. I'm not crafty and only have the most basic skills but I get an image in my head and wade in. If it doesn't go as I thought, I start again.

I was a librarian in Peoria. I did that for 7 years then the district decided they didn't need full time librarians. In order to keep full time status I had to take a second position of In-School Suspension. After a year they only had me in the library one period a day. Which tells you all about the discipline issues. About 7 years ago my oldest daughter asked me to homeschool her two children. I retired early because I, too, was exhausted. I homeschool and help my two oldest children with their home renovation business. I am very busy but I am absolutely fulfilled and enjoying my life so much more! xx

Thank you for sharing your thoughts tonight. You didn't really retire from teaching, now you're teaching thousands. I appreciate your hard work. I hope would-be crafters listen up on how much time, effort and space you need to succeed at this! You make it look so easy. I am sad to hear that you're exhausted and hubby feels you are too busy. The money probably helps out for things like that trip to Ireland. Glad your cat is becoming adjusted to the puppy. Soon they might be inseparable. Don't know how long I have watched you, but I go back to watch ones I have not seen. Long may you continue! You would have many more subscribers if they only found you. You are the gold standard as far as I am concerned. I just hope you take care of yourself as you get even more popular. Sweet dreams.

Thank you so much for this Q & A session. I really appreciated the information. I grew up with a first generation Polish Mom who was raised during the Depression and my Dad who was not very financially responsible. We had colored pillow cases when I was a child (I'm now 72) as she could buy a gathered skirt for 10 cents at a rummage sale and make 2 pillowcases from it. It took me 25 years to wear out the 2 flour sack material pillowcases she made me! Growing up without much definitely fueled my frugality, my need for financial security, and my imagination--all great traits for DIY-ing!

I can remember, my friend and I heard about carpeting our homes with scrap carpet and everyday after the carpet stores closed we headed for the dumpsters, picked up the scrap pieces and glued them with carpet glue. I did my whole basement, bedrooms, den. It looked good. It was shag carpet so, it was easier to piece together.

I really believe that starting out young and poor is a great educator! Necessity is the mother of invention and I believe we have that in common! In the first few years of my marriage I installed a dimmer switch, built shelving, re-hung a sagging door, made curtains, created my own decor and refinished furniture! (Thank goodness I was a daddy's girl and learned to use tools and my mom made sure I knew how to sew!)

Sherry, this wasn’t boring at all! I don’t really do much DIY decor because I’m too busy with crocheting. But I love watching what you can do with the most insignificant piece, turning it into a true work of art.
I was the attendance secretary at a local high school from 1984-1994 and even back then, it was a very high stress job. I relied on Xanax for the last few years, before getting into another profession.
Thank you for your dedication in the work you do for this channel. I learned a lot of things by listening today!

Sherry, as a retired public school elementary teacher of 30 years I want to say thanks for having the courage to say WHY you retired. I enjoyed so many of my students as well, but the behavior issues of some and lack of support from parents and admin was what ended it for me. Now I enjoy thrifting and crafting. I'm so glad I discovered Canterbury Cottage. The Q & A format was enjoyable. I say do that from time to time. (I was one that asked about the dusting). Thanks for the answer!

Sherry, this was wonderful! - Like a visit from a friend, but without the tea and shortbread. I loved hearing more about your background, and boy can I identify with the poor years. My hubby and I have been married 54 years, and in those early years, we ended the month by rounding up bottles to return for the extra cents. Once we decided to improve our rental kitchen by building shelves on the vacant wall. We were pretty proud of our handiwork, but after we turned out the lights and left the room, we heard an almighty crash and looked in to see our "shelving unit" was now a pile of 2x4s and boards on the floor like a set of giant pick-up sticks, with the aroma of almond extract arising from the mess of flour, sugar and other baking supplies!
Thanks for sharing. I love your presentations and find so much inspiration from your creations.
Hugs from one of your "200,000 closest friends" in Washington State. - Pam

Now a comment thats more positive. I found your videos a little over a year ago. I have loved them. I watch a number of DIY videos. But you're my favorite. Your teaching abilities come through and your videos are so professionally done. Im a disabled veteran. I can only sit up or stand up for short periods of time. But after watching your videos, I find that I may be able to do some things myself. My parents have both passed away. So I have so much stuff that belonged to them. I also have a ton of stuff that belonged to my mother in law, tho she's still with us. Having said this, I have a great deal of inventory. And I hope to get started on some projects soon. Thank you! I guess it has been almost two years since I stumbled upon your channel. I had broken my ankle leaving work and was down for three months. Then when I got the all clear to go back to work I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Breast Cancer. Your videos gave me something to look forward to on days that I had zero energy but wanted to store away ideas for someday. I think we have kindred crafting souls. I started making things out of nothing as I was very poor growing up and into my early adulthood. I often joked that I would hot glue two items together that were never meant to be. And it worked! I am a person that drags things off the curb. I'm in my sixties now and my husband and I built our own house five years ago. It is furnished with thrift store "saves" and makeovers. Now that I am in remission. And my energy is coming back, I'm diving back into crafting. Thank you for the countless hours you have entertained, inspired, and reminded me of what I love to do. Congratulations on your huge milestone. You really give us more than you know! Blessings to you!

Sherry, thank you for your very informative and entertaining QandA segment. It was very enjoyable being a guest in your home having a comfortable and informal chat. Teaching is a noble profession and you certainly made a difference in many a young person’s life, I have no doubt. I also taught for 38 years in both elementary and high school panels, so I understand the daily demands. You are my favourite teacher, Miss. ❤️🇨🇦

Thank you for using the word maximalist. I love my things, my kitch, my memories all around me. So, the next time my husband makes a comment about my "clutter," I'll simply advise him that I am a maximalist. Thanks for the Q & A. And hearty congratulations on this milestone! How awesome! All your love and hard work are paying off!

Great informative video! When you were talking about being “poor” during your early years of marriage (weren’t most of us?) I remembered something my mother used to say “necessity is the mother of invention.” Being one of 7 children (and one income) we were raised to: use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without! I really enjoy your thrifty videos.

I really enjoyed getting to know you better in this video and thank you for taking the time to do this as you sound extremely busy working so hard on your channel. By the way, I really love the chair you were sitting in, what a beautiful pattern. Hugs from Arkansas!

Thanks so much for all you do. You are a great teacher to all 201,000 of us!

Sherry!!! I am one of those who have been with you since the beginning when you were having trouble with the sound. I am not surprised that you have gained such a following! I often wish that we were neighbors. We have so much in common. My husband and I were both teachers and very poor back in the day. I have always enjoyed making things, though I am not as creative as you! I am a maximalist, and love Ireland, too. You'll soon think I am weird, but I just want you to know that I love your channel and I appreciate all that you do to entertain and inspire me!!!

Sweet Sherry, I love your house too. I think that my favorite room is definitely your library as well. However, you are definitely not cheap. You are frugal and a wise steward of your money. kind of exciting to hear that you lived in Phoenix, Arizona and shopped on Bell Road. you do happen to be one of the most creative persons I have ever watched on RUclips. Cheers to your awesome RUclips channel.

Congratulations on 200K! These were great questions and I enjoyed hearing the answers. I am also a recently retired high school teacher, 34 years teaching math and science, and I remember the "broke" years quite well. 😊 My teacher husband moved into administration, but the thriftiness stays with you. I am originally from Illinois and envy the thrifting opportunities you have there. I remember several flea markets and thrift stores that I loved to visit. Where I live now the options seem to be at the extremes, items that are new/cheaply made/repro or older items at "antique store" prices.

In regards to dust control I would also recommend an air filter running in your most knick-knackiest rooms. Also, use good quality filters in your furnace intake vents. They cost a little more, but are worth it.

I watch a lot of DIY on RUclips. You are my favorite because your decorating sense is impeccable. You do beautiful work to create items to use, not just items for sale. I do wonder what the size of your rooms must be! They look enormous. I live in an 1892 Queen Anne in Rock Island and few of the rooms are very large.
