- Celebrate Community & Culture! ✨
A Red Circle's Kwanzaa celebration is rooted in a cherished family tradition that began in the 1980s. Led by the Executive Director Erica Williams’ uncle, Damu Smith, the celebrations were held at their Aunt Joyce Coffey’s home in North St. Louis. This incredible family, known as the Black O’Kelleys, carries a legacy of pride and cultural celebration passed down through generations.
This year, we’re thrilled to have Lady J Huston, family historian and Community Arts Program Coordinator, playing a vital role in coordinating “Kwanzaa: The Village it Takes” on December 21, 2024, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church.
Lady J is a multi-talented artist, performer, and storyteller with a passion for empowering the next generation. She’s helping A Red Circle merge culture, art, and history into one unforgettable evening featuring:
🎭 A 15+ member cast of performers (Lady J on trumpet!)
🍽️ A soul food dinner prepared by our talented culinary team
🎨 A live arts project led by Jessica Johnson, our Community Arts Director
🛍️ Twelve minority-owned businesses
Lady J’s Roots & Blues program, in partnership with A Red Circle and Music to Life, inspires youth to explore their family roots and learn the foundation of American music-the Blues.
🎥 Don’t miss the Roots & Blues feature video, produced by Caitlin Ung, showcasing this beautiful connection of culture and music.
