Nice color and looks great. One note , You have the aircap on the 290 set for a Horizontal fan. Try turning the aircap 90 degrees to get a Vertical fan pattern for more even coverage without "Tiger Striping."
All the videos you produce are brilliant and informative, but it's great to see you spraying a kit body. Would love to see more of this when you can fit it in. Hopefully, you will show us the final build? Keep up the good work, this channel is awesome
Cool! I did this kit in the 90s. I did it for my friend who has a cherry red one. I used spray paint I got at the auto parts store. Back then they stocked a lot of paint. For panel lines I used a 0.5 mm black pen I got at an art store. My friend loved the model. He also still has the car too.
One comment regarding the setup of your PS-290 during spraying the clear coat. With the fan cap set as you did, you actually sprayed the clear with horizontal fan pattern. In order to get the vertical fan pattern (as you intended, I guess), you have to set the cap so that the prongs are horizontal in relation to the airbrush (basically turned 90 degrees from what you used). These prongs/horns are nothing more than additional air channels, delivering the air to the sides of the main nozzle, so that it kind of squeezes the spray cone into an oval/fan shape. It's very easy to overlook this, as our brain naturally assumes that the cap must be positioned with the prongs in the same plane as the intended fan spray pattern. In fact, they should be positioned perpendicular to the intended fan pattern. Unfortunately, this feature of the PS-290 (and others with similar fan caps) is fairly ineffective. Because of that (lucky you! 😜) this small mistake didn't affected the overall great finish at all!😉
@@barbatosrex9473Robert, Do you know what brand or size thread of fan cap would fit the Gaahleri Advantage w/ the .5 needle? You achieved an awesome finish on that 300ZX using that fan pattern.👍
@@Ryotsu2112I couldn't find a Gaahleri fan cap or any of their airbrushes that would use one. I ended up getting the PS-290 from Amazon for $100. It has standard and fan caps.
You're the best, Robert. I love how you do everything right in front of us with an explanatory commentary as you go. Please show us at least the finished model. Wonderful process & thanks for sharing!

Hey Robert! Looking for your expertise again. I’d like to buy a nice quality spray booth. You have reviewed several, and figure you can point me in the right direction. Like the airbrush, I’d like something in the middle of the road as far as pricing goes. Easy set up and tear down with good lighting and ventilation. Let me know what you recommend and thank you in advance!
It's a bit different to see you paint something other than a gundam piece or spoon, lol Very nice color and paint job. I'm sure your client will be more than pleased.
Great video! Would love to see any of the steps of you painting this kit that you would be willing to share. It already looks awesome. All the. Best to your wife and her healing process. Take care.
Hope you don't take this the wrong way, just some constructive criticism, when you sprayed the clear, you had the fan cap the wrong way to get a nice wide vertical fan, you had it set for horizontal. I'm sure it was just an oversight. I had pretty much spray gun experience over the years, I remember it by having it the opposite direction you want the fan, the air holes actually push the paint into the fan pattern. You got a good finished result either way.
If that model had metal transfers for say emblems or door locks, would you apply those before doing clear coat like decals? Or does clear coat tarnish / discolor them? You’re the man, thanks for all you do for the modelers of the world!

Great job Robert, I like that you put a lot of thought into doing this build right for the commission. When are we going to see you do a Gunpla build and paint?
I was looking at your RG3 spray gun review as I'm looking for a tool to help with larger scale model kits (1:48 aircraft, 1:35 armour), and wondering if you have experience with central pneumatic guns i could get from harbor freight?
I looked into them but even though they look the same, they're not. They require a full sized shop air compressor. When you see 2 outputs on the bottom of the handle then it's a real auto spray gun. When you look at the RG it has only making making it closer to an airbrush
Very nice! I do a lot of odd ball commission work and there's a lot of research, sourcing of materials, in addition to figuring out how long it will take to do a project. It's really great you're doing something that's totally in your wheelhouse and a vehicle you're very familiar with. Looks great and I'm sure that it will be awesome when you're finished.
Its cool seeing you work on one of your builds! I hope Mrs. Rex and the puppy are having a better time. Any chance you can show us how to spray clear colors without them clouding the chrome thats underneath?
Great job Robert!! The color looks awesome 👍👏 Hope you´ll show us the finished model. I have the same model kit in my stash and planned to paint it EH7 Yellow (pearl), but now I think I have to reconsider my decision...
Beautiful paint job! Just curious, are you wearing a respirator while spraying the 2K? I know you said you forgot your gloves but breathing the 2K is another matter. My son got sick for 2 days after spraying a model car with 2K outside without a respirator.
Love the color! Great kit to build! I heard you sand orange hand cleaner, the absolute hands down best hand clear I have ever used is Dorrs Hand Cleaner!!! Takes paint right off your hands 🙌 😎 maybe a review on that to help everyone get the paint off their hands. How is the wife doing?
I never wet sand. Maybe on occasion if there's a bad blemish I'll will do that one spot but overall I never wet sand. I personally find it tedious but if you take your time spraying it it'll come out great
As this was hot automotive paint you were using, weren’t you afraid of the paint crazing the plastic (in the video it looked like you shot the bonnet with quite a heavy coat)? Is the primer you used better in this regards compared to for example Tamiya Fine Surface Primer? Thanks for the very informative video and looking forward to seeing the completed work!
What a treat! Thanks for sharing, by the way would you recommend using a single action for doing car bodies? Going to try to emulate your technique with a Paashche H. Tried using an Iwata Revolution a few times with all kinds of PSI's and paint consistencies, and I'm not liking the final result.
You can get good results with a single action for sure, especially with car bodies. Just start spraying before you hit the car and stop spraying after you pass it.
Totally unrelated to the video but does anyone have any idea as to why my procon boy seems to be getting insufficient airflow? My other airbrushes work fine but the procon feels like it would need to be well above 30 psi to move even heavily thinned paints.
so can you recommend an inexpensive compressor i have 2 40 year old models i want to paint but i dont want a huge investment beyond airbrush and compressors.

I've wanted to use 2K gloss for some candy paint on some gundam and car kits, but cant find anywhere that would tell me what you use to clean it out of your airbrush after using it.
