Underrated is the most overused word in musical conversation. And who is underrating Al? Certainly not his fans. Certainly not critics who know what they are hearing. His lack of Pink Floyd following is merely due to his personal choice to present us with something no one else does and not enough understand.
My favourite from the 'Year of the cat' album. Used to listen to it 45 years ago while being a navy cadet on a tall ship sailing to Spain. Always reminds me of this voyage.
Better lyrics than 90% of modern hip hop, catchier tune as well, simply one of the most under-rated songs ever! Though you'd have a job explaining it to Richard Coeur de lion...
In 2009, Al Stewart spoke about “Soho (Needless To Say)” (1973), saying that the piece is “mindbogglingly complicated” and that “the words come really, really fast. He added : “I have no idea why I wrote it; I was probably reading W.H. Auden [1907 - 1973] at the time…” When the Scottish-born musician moved to London as a tennaged singer-songwriter chasing the dream, he did live in Soho. As well as being a commentary on a district of London that is - simultaneously and in equal measure - glamorous, mysterious, notorious and historically fascinating, “Soho” is a 3:55 catalog song, the kind Cole Porter (1891 - 1964) might have authored had he been “a post-war baby in a small Scots town.” 💜🎶💚
Good picture & sound quality ... you could almost be there:) 'Soho ..' came out in '73 and he says it was from about 5 years ago so that would make this 1978. Al was great .... and a bit risqué too with his line at 2:15 :D
One of my fave songs from a very underrated artist. So glad I was able to see him perform live in a smaller venue. And of course Peter White is beyond compare as a guitarist. Had no idea he was a virtuoso organist! Sincere thanks for posting.
Peter White was originally hired as a keyboardist for Al Stewart's band, but when Al heard Peter play guitar, he changed that fast. Peter White "and" AL Stewart discuss the change in various interviews on RUclips.
Just another one of those tunes that I learned about the Hammond B3 at a very early age. I love them to this day. There is NOTHING like the sound of an old Hammond Tube organ running through a screaming Leslie cabinet. Tremendous!! I have two questions... who is playing it here? And who is the second guitarist?
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️❤️❤
I'm correcting the post I made a few months ago in response to your post: You are correct that the organist is Peter White. I was mistaken in my previous post (which I've since deleted). The other guitarist is not Tim Renwick, however. I believe it is Adam Yurman.
Al Stewart never gets the credit he deserves, and either does Peter White. The two are absolutely fantastic here as always.
The best lyricist in the universe.
👌🏼👍🏼
Heard this as one of Neil Gaimons desert Island discs. Thank you Neil.
Yep, that's why I am here...nice to find new music of this quality
@@robinhampshire8923 Me too, it reminds me of Roy Harper's Ageing Raver. That's a good thing!
Me too! Just had to look it up
One of the best songs I heard the last years. It is sad to see that Al Stewart is such an underrated musician...
You could say it's sad to see, it's a tragedy, that he's wasting away on valentina way

The last 30 seconds of this song with the organ thrashing it out sounds unreal
Good song. Peter White is a great organist! And keyboardist! And guitarist! I love Al Stewart!
Al has so much hair in this video. I am glad he is still making his wonderful music.
An incredible song writer. Fascinating subjects mixed with high quality lyrics and even higher quality composition. Remarkable talent.

if subterranean homesick blues had been written in london, it would have sounded like this.
Weirdest back-up singing part ever. lol LOVE Al Stewart. Met him once. He was a doll.
Yeah ! She is ...unneeded !

This is amazing!!!
My all-time favorite musical artist. And funny to see Peter White on keyboards.
Great song played well...from an excellent album.

I lived in soho and al has it right
Peter White, Peter Green. Al knows Peters of many colors.
Peter Wood😊
BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a pure wonderful artist
always loved this song. saw al Stewart at the Berkeley theater with Steve Seskin opening
Love AllStewart
Yep. It was a bit of a challenge since Al's backup band was kind of a revolving door during the 70s. Peter White was onboard most of the time though.
Subterranean homesick blues here...just under the surface. Anyone else hear it?? Bob is that you?

Yeah...Peter White is a marketable artist in his own right. Good instrumental albums and collaboration with Basia.
Does it get any better than this? Mon dieu!
You're right, it is indeed Adam Yurman.
So, we've cleared that up!
"You never seen a lady lay down and spread her legs like..." Classic.
que hombre
I think the organist is Peter White (better known as the acoustic guitar player in "On the Border"). Pretty sure the lead guitar is Tim Renwick.
Lead guitar is Adam Yurman

I'm pretty sure this is Al with Shot in the Dark for his backing band.
I like this live version better than the studio one - has more energy and funk. Usually I feel the opposite.
Well shot video for the time.
It was shot in a TV studio with a live audience which is why it looks so good.

musikladen at Bremen. Marvellous.

Al originally hired me to play keyboards - it was only later he realized I could play guitar too!
I really hope this song is part of Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho…I think it’d fit perfectly considering the trailer
Kick Ass
Here is Peter White on guitar:

Looks like the same guy that is on organ in this video
alright!
Looks like Patrick Moraz on keyboards here.
Yes, but it's actually Robert Alpert
The bass line makes this song. When was this taped?
1978 I think
Why on earth would you compare it to hip hop?
What's the deal with the haircuts in this band?
We all had a lot of hair in the 70s!
@dtwhitwell lol
Come in back take your time and have a good look........never seen a lady lay down and spread her legs like....lyrics that would make a rapper blush.
Lol
