Nymphadora Tonks I love Catherine. She is literally my favorite character despite her wicked ways. But yeah, I knew she would be on that list. How could she not be?
I may not know enough about British history, but from what I do know about Mary Tudor (Mary I or Bloody Mary), I think an argument can be made that she was more of a victim than a tyrant
She suffered a heck of a lot of hardship, medical problems; and emotional abuse/neglect. She was a victim her whole life, even when she was a queen, she was victim to poor health; an unfaithful husband who deserted her; phantom pregnancies and no children; being hated by the pope despite actually reforming the country back to Catholism. On top of that, she was the first real queen of England in her own right, so she faced a lot of misogyny and unpopularity just for that; and also she was targetted by plots and rebellions. And finally, on her deathbed, she knew her hated, Protestant half-sister, Elizabeth would inheret the throne and reverse her entire work.... The final nail to the coffin was the fact she was not buried with her mother, but instead with her hated sister, and she'd be forever remembered as "Bloody" Mary despite doing (what she believed) was God's work. This of course, is simply just what she suffered as a queen; before then she faced many more hardships. But, as someone already pointed out, this does not excuse what she did; she did afteral burn 250 of her subjects to death; which is a horrific way to die; just for their beliefs. So, while her life does not justify this, it explains what happened in order to create a tyrant. She was a victim, and a tyrant.
Also Isabella of Spain was acting on the advice of the monk Torquemada . He was the mastermind of the Spanish Inquisition so in a sense she was a victim as well
She gets a lot more hate than she deserves seeing as her father and many other past kings caused just as much death over religion and other matters, and some were even worse.
Possibly because Mary had a bigger body count if you take in consideration that she only ruled fo 5 years, oposed to the 40 year reign of her siter. And also because Mary isn't known for much else, while Elizabeth I is known to turn England into an important player in the European political chess.
Mary pathed the way for Elizabeth, Mary was the one who came up with the idea to turn England upside down, and Elizabeth did not give her sister any credit for it. Plus, who cares if one ruled more than the other? The fact remains that people died more under Elizabeths reign, and historical facts cant be changed
Mary may have came up with the idea but she acomplished nothing of significant in that direction. Elizabeth acomplished a lot, while she had most of European monarchs and the Pope against her. And yes, the fact that Elizabeth´s rule was 8 times longer then Mary´s is important for what we are discussing here. Check how many deaths were atributed to Elizabeth´s and how many are atributed to Mary, devide them by the number of years each rulled and see who had the biggest bodycount per year of rulling. Now, I don´t think that she deserved the title of Bloody Mary, because it´s likely that she wasn´t a cruel person. She just allowed the persecutions to happen because she tought that it was necessay. But that doesn´t change the fact that her reign was marked by way more downs then ups.
Isabella of Castile... Seriously? With that logic, almost EVERY single medieval ruler could be on such a list. Moreover, other famous queens like Elizabeth I of Englad and Catherine the Great could very well be on this particular list. Facts: When she started her reign, Castile was a land constantly in chaos, bankrupted, undeveloped, ruled by greedy nobles instead of monarchs. At the time of her death, it was a developed and wealthy country (soon to be an empire) and one of Europe's leading powers. Yes, the Middle Ages were harsh times, and rulers executed people and did harsh things. (Btw Spain wasn't the only country to expel Jews, it's just the most famous to do so). While some rulers also DID CONTRIBUTE something to the development of their realms. Just like Isabella did. She is one of the MOST IMPORTANT queens regnant and Spanish rulers ever.
Thank you for bringing that up. Everyone seems to forget that. Not to mention she & her husband are the ones that funded the Columbus expedition. It's like all people can remember is the crusades, despite the fact that while the crusades might not have been right, in certain circumstances they might have been necessary.
Hey! To be fair, yes she was one of the most important monarcs in the country's history, but she did not only create the Inquisition, but also allowed slavery and genocide in America. Maybe genocide is exagerated, but the amount of victims caused by exploitation and illness in America was veeery important. Maybe she just did what other previous kings couldn't have done because of their lack of power, but that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve a spot on the list.
@@gurturnur3711 First, the inquisition was not invented by her, it was invented in France, and the Spanish iquisition, which was not so bad that we say, at most, were condemned heretics who committed very cruel crimes, by burning them at the stake; and that he blamed on the Spanish clergy, he was not even anti-Semitic, he had to expel the Jews for the religious. pressures that were experienced in court. And that of genocide due to smallpox, measles and various diseases, which killed 95% of the American population and that happened when she was already dead, in addition to the fact that she worried about and condemned the well-being of indigenous people. slavery, if it wielded great power but above, as in medieval times, the clergy also had it, even a little more. If you want to meet a REAL Spanish evil monarch, I would tell you Fernando VII
Tanesha Brett I'm binge watching Reign right now! I have so many things to do but I can't NOT watch it. Sure, it's innacurate but what show isn't now? I hate that they didn't do any more season but also kind of glad they stopped too. I don't think I could handle watching Mary's beheading, no matter her charge of treason. I guess from watching the beginning and to now (I'm on episode 7 of season 4) Mary has a special spot in my heart.
None of these can compare to Elizabeth "Blood Countess" Bathory. She legit freaking killed lots of men and women during her murderous years, and she was also believed to be a true vampire bc she bathed in the blood of her victims to be young for "all eternity". I am pretty much someone whose mother is also named Elizabeth, and there's also Elizabeth the first. Edit: oh god… this is back when I said “legit freaking” and “bc” instead of “because” 😂 thanks for the thumbs ups! :)
I feel slightly bad for bloody Mary as she was often overlooked by Henry as he even stated that he was proud of Elizabeth and Edward but wasn't fond of Mary
He didn't like defiance in the women who were close to him, and Mary defied him by not accepting that he was head of the Church in England or his marriage to Anne Boleyn, etc. Completely understandable on her part, but Henry VIII wasn't the most logical or tolerant king to sit a throne.
Nah, Henry was actually more fond of Mary than Elizabeth because she was his oldest wghile Elizabeth was not only a middle child/girl but also his daughter with Anne Boleyn.
No Elizabeth of England? I can tell this video is British, they hid their own dirt well. Isabel of Castile didn't even belong on the list. As the Inquisition is a myth created by Elizabeth. Elizabeth, the lady who ramped up atrocities in Ireland against Catholics, tortured and disemboweled her own men and then read stories about them before she went to bed. And funnier still, she invented the myth of the Spanish Inquisition to scare the English from Catholicism. While she herself tortured everyone in her tower. And had poems written about her virginity.
When her sister, Mary 1, was queen, she locked Elizabeth into a tower. Henry (Elizabeths step brother) was supposed to be king. He died young. It was Lady Jane Grey who was queen for 9 days until her head was chopped off. Then it was Mary 1. She was scary. Thats why they call her Bloody Mary. Then Elizabeth was queen. She helped fight the Spanish. She was a great queen. It might have been Mary 1 who tortured her men. Idk Edit: Henry is supposed to be Edward. My mistake
Your missing a lot more queens what about Elizabeth she basically killed the Catholics because of her older sister, and she killed another queen out of fear.
Princess Uluwehi Ortega-Sanchez She killed Mary Stuart because of pressure of the privy council. Elizabeth had kept her alive for 21 years and when the Babington Plot happened, Elizabeth was left with no other option since Mary was implicated into treason, for which the punishment is death.
The Inquisition was was mostly her invention. While she herself tortured everyone in her tower ironically. And had poems written about her virginity because she probably wasn't a virgin. She was a class A psycho and the fact that many think her a great ruler is a testament to her propaganda. Elizabeth is only remembered well because of propaganda and the fact that she was a woman ruler with weird red hair.
And the atrocities in Ireland, mass torture against her own people, as well and made up stories of Catholic cruelty through the "Inquisition" (that still exists to this day) to scare her population from Spain as she herself conducted such acts on her own people? Not easily excusable. She's much worse than Isabella of Castle who, unlike the English and French who had a policy of mass murder, allowed Jews and Muslims to convert or more to Greece. Which was unheard of at the time. Yet, Elizabeth is hailed as the hero and Isabel demonized. It's almost like her propaganda won to this day, hmm? Reminds he of her film, _Elizabeth The Golden Age_ which was panned by critics for it's atrocious misrepresentation of what actually occurred under her. She read stories of torture before bed, nuff said.
Him:*mentions Mary and Isabelle* Me:*remembers Isabelle 1st is the grandmother of Mary the 1st* *both are mentioned on the list* Also me:it runs in the family
I don’t think so when you consider everything that happened under her and King Ferdinand’s reign: the Spanish Inquisition and the financing of Christopher Columbus expedition although after she found out about the atrocities that Columbus and his crew committed against the natives that she had him jailed but King Ferdinand had him released
she was. They speak half-truths in this. Pure Propaganda- there is a very anti-Catholic sentiment in this. Elizabeth I was far far worse than "Bloody" Mary- yet the Protestant Queen is not even mentioned.
Really happy to see Wu Zetian make no.2! She was definitely a highly successful ruler but a vicious person at heart. That being said it's not clear what she was truly accountable for, as lots of legends sprung up about her, probably because China was rarely ever ruled by a woman, and yet she ruled the empire so well, so jealousy is without a doubt responsible for some of the stories. If you're interested though, her story is (read with a grain of salt, of course): she came from nothing, entered the palace as a maid when she was 14, got the emperor's attention and gradually became a lowly concubine, and slowly worked her way up to the top until she was empress. (Emperors can depose and get new empresses easily although it didn't happen that often). She allegedly had many secret lovers and all her children were borne of her lover(s), they were not legitimate - which is why she killed them so the emperor wouldn't find out. She had most of her family killed, because she was afraid they'd take her place - she killed her sister when she found out that the emperor was having an affair with her, she killed the previous empress even though she was no longer a threat, just out of jealousy/spite ... and so on until all her enemies or would-be enemies were dead. What a woman!
I think it's kinda unfair that Isabella is on this list. Yeah, the fact that she kicked all the Jewish and Muslim people who didn't want to convert to Christianity out of her kingdom kinda sucked, but at the same time, she fixed the financial instability her brother before her caused, fixed the government to make it more effective, and was a female ruler in a time where it was uncommon for women to wield power.
Isabella doesn't belong on the list. Almost everything she did was done to a much harsher degree by other kings and queens. She's considered strange for not killing the Moors and Jews, for example. She converted them. It's important to remember that the English and French straight out killed their Jews.
Well, no. The english king Edward the first banished the jews from England, and the French kings had a sort of racket going on where they would threaten to expulse the jews... except if they paid.
Henry VIII - 72,000 Edward VI - 5,500 Mary I - 284 Elizabeth - 330 MARY IS ONLY CALLED BLOODY MARY DUE TO THE FACT THAT SHE WAS A CATHOLIC WHEN HER FATHER DECIDED THAT HER MOTHER WASNT GOOD ENOUGH DUE TO HER HAVING ONLY ONE BOY WHO DIED AT A FEW WEEKS. MARY WAS THE ONLY CHILD OF 9 THAT SURVIVE AND YET HE DISCRIMINATED TOWARDS HER CALLED HER A BASTARD.
And "Bloody Mary" is a slanderous lie. Almost everything we're told is a lie. Mary was a holy Catholic woman who only executed about 120 of the worst criminals guilty of treason. See Hilaire Belloc, Characters of the Reformation.
Though she wasn't a queen, Countess Elizabeth de Báthory from the Kingdom of Hungary was known for her ruthlessness and terror against her subjects, even accused of vampirism. Maybe for your next video possibly doing a segment on the most evil noble women? I'd love to hear more about de Báthory and others like her who weren't queens but reigned terror in their own right.
WatchMojo, please stop turning to the wrong sources in regards to Mary I of England and Isabel I of Castile because they weren’t evil! Isabel was one of the greatest monarchs ever to have lived and Mary was one of the most misunderstood women in history. Unfortunately, they were both unfairly vilified by the anti-Spanish Black Legend and overzealous anti-Catholic misogynist reformers. They were actually nothing like the other women on this list.
Kara Hirsch exactly, Isabel was a women of her time and she didn’t hold the Spanish Inquisition because she was evil, but because she believed it was the right thing to do and that she was doing God’s work, which is also something her great-grandson Felipe II believed he was doing during his reign.
DarkDancer06 put the crack pipe down Isabella should have been number one because of her native populations were wiped out. Spain was way better under muslims rule ppl were free to practice any religion.
Max Hall Hitler lived in a different time from Isabel and the two were nothing alike. Hitler was an evil maniac, but Isabel wasn’t - views of different religions and ethnic groups were not in the 15th century what they were in the 20th century and still are. Hitler’s motive for his actions was hatred, but Isabel’s was faith. As both a devout Catholic and a woman of her time, she believed that Christianity was the true religion of Spain and sought to restore her country to Christendom after Spain had been conquered by the Turks and Islamic rulers several centuries before. While Hitler invaded other countries and sought to murder millions of people because of their ethnicity and sexuality, Isabel took her country back and she didn’t seek to slaughter many people based on their ethnicity and sexuality. If you have to compare Hitler to a medieval monarch, it would be Isabel’s wife-killing son-in-law Henry VIII who was more like Hitler since he was far more brutal and ruthless than Isabel.
Isabel I of Castile was no bad queen, she was probably the greatest Spain has ever had. Muslims and Jews had been persecuted way before the Inquisition, so you have no argument there.
Adam Xan while we were taught in the history books of the horrendous black death that swept Europe. Never is it mentioned of this golden Age of Enlightenment on the other side of the globe- where the king of England even asked through letters whether they would allow his daughter(s) amongst others to gain knowledge (so it will help their own country) from the Islamic side of spain.
Innocent ? The Muslims colaborated with the Ottoman Turks, the Jews colaborated with the Muslims for hundred of years. A multi faith society in those days could not work because if you are not he same faith as your king or emperor than you dont recognize his divine right to rule. She tried to give them freedom with edict of Alhambra in 1491 but Muslims broke it first, they got what they deserved.
She's responsible of the genocide cause upon the native population of the Americas. She treated her own daughter as a crazy woman just because she wasn't religious enough. She expelled alot of muslims and jews from her realm just because she thought their religion was heresy while her own was the only truth (and before you try to argue with me on this, the Muslims on Spain tolerated the Christians in their realm. They tolerated them for centuries). She started slavery on Christian Spain when it was abolished when Visigoths settled on the region. She also stated she wanted to continue "the Reconquista" by conquering and invading Morocco. How that woman isn't bad? She was cruel and a crazy zealot.
Okay if you put Isabella of Castile on such a list, then on the Most Evil Kings list let's put some Charlemagne, Louis XIV, William the Conqueror, Peter the Great, Suleiman the Magnificent, Justinian the Great, Napoleon, etc, etc. You can kinda put every single ruler whose rule was significant there.
Do not confuse evil queen by: women who do what they CAN at precise time! By exemple, we know now, as historians recognize it now (only!), Catherine de Medicis had to do whatever she can for keeping her sons of the thrones, on a very difficult period for France. And who blamed her? At this point, it's the crown for her entire family OR being executed...And as we know, the Vallois didn't keep the crown (but her last daughter married the futur kind), so, MAYBE, we can understand why she did what she did. And for Bloody Marie, no excuse of course... but do you know the all story? It's so much complicated than that. But yeah, big news... women can be as cruel as men!
Men can be cruel. Women can be cruel. THAT DOES NOT JUSTIFY THE FACT that Catherine killed 70K Hugenots. Mary burnt almost 300 protestants. I know that their lives were hard, but BARELY it is a justification for perfectly schemed MASSACRES.

Isabella I of Castile was never evil she had to suffer so much just to get to the throne she was a kind and sweet women to the poor and her family she was also very smart and wise although the Spanish Inquisition wasn't her brightest move she was against enslavement towards the Americans but her non enslavement protests were ignored by her husband Fernando of Aragon.
JocelynhkCarter: Wow, never knew that there were bloody queens that actually lived in this world. I've really learn a lot. I'm subscribing, I would like to see more of these kind of videos!
👑 Isabelle I of Castile 👑 was great ruler - she ended Reconquista, implemented economic reforms and stabilization, started Spanish exploration of foreign lands and bringed beginning of Golden Age for Spain. Long Live The Queen! ✌️
There is a video called that. Though, it is quite ironic they made one specifically for "evil queens" considering there has been far less queens than kings in the first place; and if you compare these "evil queens" many of which no worse than their male contempories/standards of the time; to the evil kings, there's hardly any contest. Ok, they did bad things but not really comparable to the kings on the other list. It's obvious Mary I would be on this list as she burned 250 or so protestants; yet it fails to mention in most cases she gave people a chance to recant and only burned those who refused. Her father however, killed many, many more; split the entire country apart and burned and quartered MANY people for their beliefs; just because of his lust for one woman. He robbed the people, destroyed stability for the poor; and was just plain egotistical; far worse than Mary, yet he's not on the list of worst kings.
If mary is in this than Elizabeth the first should also be in this list.I think the reason she is not on this list is because this is watchmojo.comUK🇬🇧
this list is bullshit, you just picked some of the most famous queens in history and told some of the bad things they did, while kings have done through history the same things or even worse.
Lol, the one doesn't erase the other. You are just pissed off because those people who commited these atrocities were women. Women are not always nice you know
What about Henry VII's mum Margaret Beaufort - I think she was a Dowager Queen (or King's Mother). She murdered the Princes in the Tower and then after Arthur Prince of Wales died, tried to stop Katherine of Aragon from marrying Henry VIII!
Isabella I of Castille was not evil. This is not all, she has her reasons. It's not good to kill people, but in the case of Muslims it's obvious why that happened. You can't expect take a Spain and when people from Spain/catholics take their country back live happily ever after without getting hate for what you did.
I could tell this is WatchMojo UK. By putting Mary Tudor on the thumbnail and having her and Isabella of Castile as Evil Queen's while not even having Elizabeth I on the list.
Actually, pal, speaking as someone educated on this topic, there is no evidence or even reports of that from her time. She did, however, beat girls to death and torture them for fun along with her torture buddies. The bathing in blood story came after her death vamped.org/2015/03/29/elizabeth-bathorys-blood-baths-separating-myth-from-reality/ this explains it pretty well in a not-too-long article
Isabella of Castile? You haven't read anything about history, haven't you? Besides, Elizabeth I pursued catholics after Mary Tudor did with protestants, so... Not quite different
Can we agree that the entire Medici clan were insane. You can see the malevolence of the Italian family and those that rose to the French monarch seats. They wanted what they wanted and believed they were the only ones to carry it out.
Henry VIII's children did get on. Like. Mary. She did help Elizabeth after she lost her mother. And. Helped direct Elizabeth's studies. Elizabeth never interfered with Mary's reign.

Lucy Connor ya
He was pretty rotten to Elizabeth at times too.
I took a grad course on English queens. It was amazing.
John NoNameGibbon Why didnt isabella belong on the list ??
John NoNameGibbon the inquisition is real but it's exaggerated
When her sister, Mary 1, was queen, she locked Elizabeth into a tower. Henry (Elizabeths step brother) was supposed to be king. He died young. It was Lady Jane Grey who was queen for 9 days until her head was chopped off. Then it was Mary 1. She was scary. Thats why they call her Bloody Mary. Then Elizabeth was queen. She helped fight the Spanish. She was a great queen. It might have been Mary 1 who tortured her men. Idk
Edit: Henry is supposed to be Edward. My mistake
Drizzle Studios What step-brother?
Stacey Vermilyea Queen Elizabeth I had a step brother. I dont know his name tho
Catherine killing Diane scene was because she killed her twins
Historically, Diane actually died from a horse riding accident.
Isobel Duncan yes I’m aware of that I was saying in the show Reign that was why she killed Diane de Poiters xx
Fr
And it didn’t happen in history, Reign is a shit show anyway and inaccurate as fuck
Demon it doesn’t once say that it is 100% historically accurate and it’s not a documentary it’s a show that’s based on history but with added drama
The other queen tried to have her killed first
And the atrocities in Ireland, mass torture against her own people, as well and made up stories of Catholic cruelty through the "Inquisition" (that still exists to this day) to scare her population from Spain as she herself conducted such acts on her own people? Not easily excusable. She's much worse than Isabella of Castle who, unlike the English and French who had a policy of mass murder, allowed Jews and Muslims to convert or more to Greece. Which was unheard of at the time.
Yet, Elizabeth is hailed as the hero and Isabel demonized. It's almost like her propaganda won to this day, hmm? Reminds he of her film, _Elizabeth The Golden Age_ which was panned by critics for it's atrocious misrepresentation of what actually occurred under her. She read stories of torture before bed, nuff said.
And both there names is Mary
Why isn't Elizibeth Bathory on this list
because she was just a countess, not a queen
Because: A) she wasn't a queen;
B) There's a big possibility that the acusations against her were fraudulent.
Well, she wasn't a Queen. She was aCountess. That'd be why.
The video said that the person did not have to be a queen-just a ruler in her region-I believe that Elizabeth of Bathory did rule her region
Still, she wasn´t the ruler of the country nor the entire Hungarian people. She still had to ansewr to the king.

I thought that Isabela I of Castille was a kind monarch considering that Catherine of Aragon was a kind daughter of hers Catherine was Faithful
Henry VIII - 72,000
Edward VI - 5,500
Mary I - 284
Elizabeth - 330
MARY IS ONLY CALLED BLOODY MARY DUE TO THE FACT THAT SHE WAS A CATHOLIC WHEN HER FATHER DECIDED THAT HER MOTHER WASNT GOOD ENOUGH DUE TO HER HAVING ONLY ONE BOY WHO DIED AT A FEW WEEKS. MARY WAS THE ONLY CHILD OF 9 THAT SURVIVE AND YET HE DISCRIMINATED TOWARDS HER CALLED HER A BASTARD.
Tbf Henry VII killed more than “ Bloody Mary “
And "Bloody Mary" is a slanderous lie. Almost everything we're told is a lie. Mary was a holy Catholic woman who only executed about 120 of the worst criminals guilty of treason. See Hilaire Belloc, Characters of the Reformation.
I wouldn’t call Mary evil!! Burning was the common punishment for heretics in the 16th cent, both Catholic and Protestant
Mary was no more evil than other monarchs at the time; just incredibly unlucky.

They forget to tell you Isabel killed because the turkey's where killing the Spanish people and trying to over throw the Spanish royal family
Adam Xan and yet it was the Royal Muslim Family of Granada who killed each other so they could take the throne...
I love how women do exactly what men have always done throughout history and are deemed 'evil'...
i kinda agree except this video is labeled evil queens, they would probably make a new one for kings.
There are plenty of evil kings and heads of empires some of whom women almost had a direct influence over the male head of state.
Men are also called evil wtf r you talking about
@@snowflower1047 She probably thinks all women are angels.

Where the hell is Elizabeth I of England? She had an extremely high body count and signed the death warrant of Mary Queen of Scots.
Queen Isabel of Castile wasn’t... even bad.

BLOODY MARY WAS A QUEEN AND RIGHT NOW FOR ME ITS 3:37
Do not confuse evil queen by: women who do what they CAN at precise time!

How about the top ten worst kings for once
