An Officer and a Gentleman : means you have to be both. It has to do with character, which is what the drill Sargeant keeps reminding them.

Great movie. I saw this in the movies when it first came out. My Uncle a college professor took me. At the time I was in college and enrolling in a senior ROTC Program and this movie inspired me. I did complete ROTC, received my commission and took the exact oath as they did in the movie and started my career in the Regular Army as a commissioned officer. This movie always brings back great memories of my youthful 20's and that journey when I served in the military 😎

This movie affected me similarly. I went to college and saw this movie while going, but married a woman who was deadset against having a soldier (or sailor, or airmen, etc...) as a husband. After our divorce, I joined under the WOFT program, like you, mainly because of this movie. I LOVED my career and retired a CW4.

This was a big movie for Richard Gere and for Debra Winger, getting attention and advancing their careers for both. It was also loved for its pro military viewpoint in the story. It was a patriotic time back then, and military personnel of all branches were loved and respected overall.

It was a period heavy on military and cold war propaganda after the atrocities we committed in Korea and Vietnam. The military sucked then and it sucks now. Never trust pro military propaganda.

Debra Winger grew up in my neighborhood and went to my HS, but she was a few years ahead of me. In the early 1970's she was a costumed Troll at Magic Mountain (A few years later, I was a Ride Operator at MM) and almost died when she tumbled out the back of a Cushman cart. She spent months in the hospital, blind and partially paralyzed. Fortunately she recovered.

Interesting fact about Richard Gere & Debra Winger, which was, they actually couldn't stand each other while making this movie, yet in their later years, learned to move passed their differences.
These days, they joke with one another about all that friction between them during the shooting of "An Officer And A Gentleman"
Yet, they had to not only suppress all of those real-life negative feelings during their scenes, but also give convincing performances, as if they were actually in-love with each other, which is a real testament to their acting abilities.
These days, on the very rare occasions when they actually do run into each other at some event, Richard will jokingly ask Debra, "Are you still talking sh_t about me?", to which she will respond in fun, "No, I'm not talking sh_t about you."

Don't forget he also won an Emmy for his work as "Fiddler" in Roots. Then in 1970 he was in the Blaxploitation Movie The Landlord with Beau Bridges, Lee Grant (whose daughter Dinah Manoff played Marty In Grease). Beau worked with the cream of the Crop of Black Talent, Pearl Bailey, Diana Sands, and Chris Calloway the daughter of Cab Calloway who was on the US Soap Opera The Doctors.

"You can forget it! You're out!"
"Don't you do it! Don't! You... I got nowhere else to go! I got nowhere else to g... I got nothin' else."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Tommy Petersen.
Action Star Fact: Lisa Eilbacher said the hardest part about doing her obstacle course scenes was pretending she was out of shape. In fact, reports were that she was in the best physical condition of all the actors.
Hot Take Fact: For the scene where David Keith swallows the engagement ring, he would actually swallow the actual ring but it was attached to a string so that he could pull it right back up. In one interview he said he had to do the scene about 10 times and it was awful.
Awards And Accolades Fact: Louis Gossett, Jr. won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He was the first black male to win an Oscar in a supporting role, the second black male to win for acting, and the third black actor to win overall. Additionally, Gossett won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globe Awards and NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor In A Motion Picture at the NAACP Image Awards.
Cinderella Ending Fact: Richard Gere balked at shooting the ending of the film, in which Zack arrives at Paula's (Debra Winger) factory wearing his Naval dress whites and carries her off the factory floor. Gere thought the ending would not work because it was too sentimental. Taylor Hackford agreed with Gere until, during a rehearsal, the extras playing the workers began to cheer and cry. When Gere saw the scene later, with the music underneath it (Up Where We Belong (1982) by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes) at the right tempo, he said it gave him chills. Gere is now convinced Hackford made the right decision. Screenwriter Michael Hauge, in his book Writing Screenplays That Sell (2011), echoed this opinion: "I don't believe that those who criticized this Cinderella-style ending were paying very close attention to who exactly is rescuing whom."
Good Frienemies Fact: According to Louis Gossett, Jr. in his book An Actor And A Gentleman (2010), Richard Gere and Debra Winger did not get along during filming, and would distance themselves from each other significantly while the camera wasn't rolling. Publicly, she called him a "brick wall" while he admitted there was "tension" between them. Even though Gere was playing the title role and had top billing and more screentime, he reacted badly when he realized that Winger had the acting chops and charisma to steal every scene she was in, resulting in an Academy Award nomination as Best Actress. Thirty years later, Gere was complimentary towards Winger when he said that she was much more open to the camera than he was and he appreciated the fact that she presented him with an award at the Rome Film Festival.

    • @okchristina
      @okchristina  2 месяца назад +1

      The ring --- ouch.
I'm so glad Gossett won those awards for this role!! RIP

bangable" (he used a different word).
    6. Lisa Eilbacher was very athletic and really had to work hard not to be while playing Seeger.
    7. BTW as a sailor who had to "endure" Hawaii for 3 1/2 years and I can tell you Lynette doesn't want to go there. My time there was 3 years 5 months too long. Not an 808 fan.

nobody liked Debra Winger. Ask John Travolta and anybody who worked on 'Urban Cowboy'.

Omg I didn't even think about the big goal of Hawaii in the plot as not being what it thinks it is -- we just assume it is to go along with the plot happily! Funny to know the reality!

That is not Top Gun….this is just their basic training….then if you do get chosen to fly you go to flight school…then once you are a pilot for awhile and you are good enough you can go to Top Gun school.

The USN gave NO support for the making of this film, unlike "Top Gun". It didn't fit into their image of the navy

It isn't a comedy. You think he has been gray all of his life? He was 32 when it was released. When remarking about Zach's behavior remember it came from his father and being left alone in the Philippines while his dad was qt sea.

if you're a fan of a young Richard Gere (and his male appendage) you might want to take a look at 'American Gigolo', 'Breathless' and 'Looking for Mr. Goodbar'.

@@okchristina Wow! Yeah, the end is an epic & classic scene. But, RUclips is what it is. U saw it, so what difference does it make? Constructive criticism is one thing, but Tom, u shld take it down a notch (F-bombs & saying "stupidly", really? - this isn't that big a deal). For wht it's worth Christina, I enjoyed the reaction. Unsure if it's noted in other comments, but a thread in the story is we all (as u said) hv our "walls to climb." Mayo was a loner. The scene when he gave up the record to help Segar "get over her wall" was affirming for them both. Unfortunately, Sid cldn't get over his wall. This is such a great movie. Glad u enjoyed it.
