My father did the illustrations for this. Saul Mandel, a legend in Mid-Century advertising. You can watch his documentary by putting "Saul Mandel" in the RUclips Search. Thank you for finding this clip!
"That's what happiness is!" As the song originally said, when the first run of this commercial was shown. And the song by itself (with no reference to Kent cigarettes) was a hit, with that line included. "To a night owl, it's a good day's sleep", and so on. This led to the phrase "Happiness is..." being popular in the '60s. Two examples: Peanuts characters in a quickie book of illustrations: "Happiness Is A Warm Puppy". Beatles song from the White Album: "Happiness Is A Warm Gun".
This is beautiful music all the way. I remember it in my youth. Those were the good when the Marloro man was king. I long for the days when I used to sit in front of the tv with my candy cigarettes singing to the Kent commercial. This commercial is a great way to teach children geography & sociology. It's a fact of life-- if you want to live a long life, light up!
My little bother couldn't have been more than 4 or so, when he learned Daddy smoked Kents. He practically dived for Daddy's cigs when the commercial came on, so he could show the pack to the TV!
I remember this ad campaign. There were several different versions of this great jingle. They were played on TV and radio. I was about 10, and I remember trying to think of my own rhyme scheme for this tune.
Actually, the Lorillard Tobacco Company has been in existence since 1760, when a French immigrant named Pierre Lorillard established a snuff mill on the banks of the Hudson River in what is now New York City.
Ray Conniff it is. And their "Happiness Is" hit ("to the Beatles it's a Yeah, Yeah, Yeah"?) followed this commercial jingle, much as "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" later followed the famous Coke jingle. And then of course John Williams ripped it off in 1981 for "Raiders of the Lost Ark March."
My folks smoked Salems, and that jingle from my childhood has stuck with me through today. Catchy jingles, but the anti-smoking PSA's were actually way more effective ads.
'altfactor', "Happiness Is" was originally written for use in this ad campaign in late 1965, and became a successful song on its own (minus the "Kent" plugs). However, protest led to Lorillard removing the words "happiness is" from the 1966 version of the jingle {i.e. "Happiness is, the taste of Kent...more taste, fine tobacco- that's what happiness is"}, substituting a flute obligato instead, as in this spot.
I say this commercial 1 time over 10 years ago on a cdrom with old commercials on it and remember every word. That shows how powerful these ads really are. I bet there are kids under 30 who know the winston tastes good like a (your) cigarette should, who were born after the cigarette commercial ban.
@scotpens You can still find those things if you know where to look. The Eastern MA/Rhode Island CD & comic store chain Newbury Comics sells them right up front at the checkout counter, along with Blackjack, Teaberry & Beeman's gum.
That's not a girl at .20, it's a dutchman, the song even says it. Ever go on "It's a Small World" ? That's how the dutch men used to dress. No swastika either, just lines that you'd find in a dutch windmill.
Funny how in 2010 with all the evidence and info available to young people about how deadly smoking is, , they smoke anyway...folks, your lungs won't be young forever..

To a writer - it’s a witty pun
To a rapper - it’s a loaded gun
To a junkie - it’s where it went
To a smoker - it’s a Kent!
Back in the 60's Mad Magazine ran a very funny parody of this ad- called the "Taste of Death"
Yes . . . back cover of #109, March 1967. Bob Clarke nailed Saul Mandel's style.
Sounds like the Ray Conniff Singers.
"That's what happiness is!"

9 out of 10 1950's doctors agree! And if you smoke, take the Kent Challenge and try Kents, with the scientific Micronite (asbestos) filter!
My little bother couldn't have been more than 4 or so, when he learned Daddy smoked Kents. He practically dived for Daddy's cigs when the commercial came on, so he could show the pack to the TV!
To the English, it's a union Jack
To the Afghan , it's a ton of smack
To the homeless, it's living in a tent
To a smoker, it's a kent!
I remember this ad campaign. There were several different versions of this great jingle. They were played on TV and radio. I was about 10, and I remember trying to think of my own rhyme scheme for this tune.
Now...who couldn't resist smoking a Kent after hearing such a jaunty tune?

I new the Indiana Jones theme sounded familiar. :-)
It's a bit scary but I remember this and the jingle...never smoked though.
"Different things to different people--That's what happiness is."
Actually, as cigarette ads went in those days, the Kent commercials were pretty good. I still remember parts of that jingle.
Just saw a perfect magazine parody over at Facebook that gave me a good laugh!

There was a little town called Kent in north-central Oregon. No one lives there anymore...
The first chick I dated smoked Lark's. When it ceased making cigarettes she switched to Kent's, her mother's cigarette.
@atlmuscleman Yeah, like "Johnny Smoke" and the "Like Father, Like Son" PSA's. They came out shortly before this ad (mid-'60s).
Good stuff, keep it coming!
That is a hysterical idea!
@scotpens You can still find those things if you know where to look. The Eastern MA/Rhode Island CD & comic store chain Newbury Comics sells them right up front at the checkout counter, along with Blackjack, Teaberry & Beeman's gum.
To Sheldon Cooper
Your'e In His Spot.
To Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon
Some Like It Hot.
To a Clark, it's a Kent.
I think this aired after Lorillard took the crocidolite out of the Kent filter.
Long before the Surgeon General put warning labels on all cigarette packs which says, “Cigarette smoking can be harmful to your health.”
The first warning label said 'Cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health.'
@@spectrum10 Thanks for the correction.

Agreed, the only problem is that when I originally devised it, I thought it was brilliant which is the sad part of the story.

VERY bad joke! However, you do get an A for effort!
Did anyone notice that the Indiana Jones theme is the same tune as this song?
Yes, I noticed this, and recently rewatched the movie. It’s only a few bars of the song, but it stuck in my mind for years!
Lois Lane probably puffed on a different Kent back in the day.
