@@StephenJReid It's going well! Training for the Garmin KC Marathon on Oct 15. It's my 1st full marathon, so training has been a big commitment and journey.
Great footage of the race, I was there too this year- I had fun trying to spot myself in the video but no luck! Fair play for managing to record and actually speak while racing, that is a feat in itself. It's nice getting to re-live the race whilst warm on my couch, I've finally gotten a chance to properly enjoy the views 🙃
Thanks! yeah I don't know how people did the ultra, I stood and watched the ultra runners come down that last climb, broken people! The hike of this route is quite a bit shorter, you can avoid the entire start and end climb and descent by starting in Glen Nevis
Haha, not quite, Mourne Skyline is actually 6km longer with 1000meters more climbing! Very different terrain though to the Mournes. A lot more exposed and loose underfoot
Hmm good question. I was more exhausted at the end of this than I was at Skyline, didn't even want talk to anyone. I think the battering from the wet and cold played a part in that. Terrain is more difficult, there's no real scrambling in the Mournes or narrow ridges. This felt more dangerous. Although I think maybe I enjoyed it more. But that might partly be because it was all new. hard to say! Thinking of giving it a go?
Well done 💥fantastic video and fantastic race - you’ve got a new subscriber! I did the race again this year but missed the cut offs at Glen Nevis …. but then i’m super old. Try again next year 👍
@@StephenJReid lol, I’d get back home in one piece in Antrim mind you. Not sure I’m levelled up to that terrain just yet but it’s a brilliant vid. That MX nutrition looks interesting.
Another really good video, The mix between the landscape perspective and the up-close competition really tells the story well. In the video you do not speak to the competitive side but I have to ask, How do you run, and record all that b-roll in the same race? I would think you would be crossing the finish line well after dark. Also the mix between the GoPro footage and the insta360 One x2 is really good. That 360 really gives an additional perspective that the GoPro could not get. I go for a walk in my neighborhood (think concrete) with camera and then watch your opus and I am embarrassed. lol
Thanks! For me in a race like this for the first time I don't have any other goal other than to give a solid effort and finish. So my focus is on making the best video I can while still steady pushing. I finished in 7:22, which was 488 out of 749, so happy with that. The last runners did finish in the dark at nearly 11hours, although they had been officially timed out at that stage. If I did it again I would be chasing a better time and would be a bit more competitive. The drone footage was either shot in advance or the following day where I hiked back up again! During the race I have to decide what I will and won't shoot and which camera will be best for it. Remember out of a 7+ hour race you only got to actually see about 15mins of it. Been making running videos for 4years now so I've gotten better at balancing it all. Takes time.
Fantastic, epic vlog. Feels like I was there with you, minus the cold, the wind, the clouds, the rain, the pain, the rolled ankle and the suffering of course 😆. Enjoy! It's not your typical sports drink as it has loads of electrolytes too, but I find it easier to drink as it's not super sweet. Took me a long time to build up to this but it's doable with training. very different terrain from the Mournes!
Great videoography, compelling stories as always! Loved it and want to this event myself now! You really captured the essence of mid race misery there. The point at which you want to give up but can't because no one is evacing you from the mountain! I noticed you roll your ankle if any video that involves running, not teaching you to suck eggs, but did you ever consider a lightweight boot like an inov8 or la sportive?
Thanks Rob! Haha yeah I could hear a helicopter in the distance in the worst parts of the race and was hoping it would come pick me up! I have a permanently weakened left ankle from snapped a couple of ligaments in it about 3years ago. So that’s left it prone to rolling. My physios advice was my best option is to do strengthening exercises. Which of course I have mostly ignored to my detriment. I’m really bad at habit forming. It’s actually only really been this last year that I’ve been rolling my ankle during actual races. I just need to get back to doing those exercises. I have considered a more supportive shoe, but I’d treat it as cure
@@StephenJReid those physio exercises aren't for doing, they are just for temporary moral support while your body recovers naturally before you break it again
@@StephenJReid my guess is they already know... 😂 Like mine does everytime I come back and they measure 'something' on the little handheld dyno and it's regressed to 'toddler' like hamstring strength
Thanks Alan, would you give it a go? Shoes mostly worked well, same shoes I've done all my big Mournes races in. A bit more grip on the boggy muddy sections would have been nice though.

Yes on the last peak before am bodach…10.35 in your video
@@crabtreer oh yeah! With the very accurate directions 😂
@@StephenJReid yeah...couldnt really go that wrong... up, down, up, down..
Well done! It's a tough tough race.
Thanks Peter! Race kinda broke me after.
I haven’t run in the mountains since. Think I overdid it. Taking a bit of a break from mountain running for a while this year.
I loved this so much! Congrats on completing the race and for such a beautifully crafted video of the experience! I am learning a ton from the work you share on this channel.
Thanks Ray! How's your running going?
@@StephenJReid It's going well! Training for the Garmin KC Marathon on Oct 15. It's my 1st full marathon, so training has been a big commitment and journey.
Great footage of the race, I was there too this year- I had fun trying to spot myself in the video but no luck! Fair play for managing to record and actually speak while racing, that is a feat in itself. It's nice getting to re-live the race whilst warm on my couch, I've finally gotten a chance to properly enjoy the views 🙃
Thanks Emma 🙂
Amazing always fancied the ring of steel for a hike but think I'd die on an ultra race! Well done great video as always 👍
Thanks! yeah I don't know how people did the ultra, I stood and watched the ultra runners come down that last climb, broken people! The hike of this route is quite a bit shorter, you can avoid the entire start and end climb and descent by starting in Glen Nevis
And one of the best running downs,,,,
The downhill but was nasty!
Well done Stephen, that will make any run you do in the mournes seem like a walk in the park 😂
Haha, not quite, Mourne Skyline is actually 6km longer with 1000meters more climbing! Very different terrain though to the Mournes. A lot more exposed and loose underfoot
Deep respect 💪💪
Thanks! 🙂
Absolutely fantastic Stephen! How did it compare to mourne skyline?
Hmm good question. I was more exhausted at the end of this than I was at Skyline, didn't even want talk to anyone. I think the battering from the wet and cold played a part in that. Terrain is more difficult, there's no real scrambling in the Mournes or narrow ridges. This felt more dangerous. Although I think maybe I enjoyed it more. But that might partly be because it was all new. hard to say!
Thinking of giving it a go?
Excellent video. I found that really tough and watching that I think I am entitled.
Thanks Paul! 🙂
Well done 💥fantastic video and fantastic race - you’ve got a new subscriber! I did the race again this year but missed the cut offs at Glen Nevis …. but then i’m super old. Try again next year 👍
Thanks Buzz! It's a seriously tough course, I was really worried about not making the cut offs. Over 1 in 10 runners didn't finish
Well done mate, thanks for amazing video. I am down for Ring of still this year :)
Well done!
Thanks Alan!
Very impressive, well done 🎉👌🏃♂️
Thanks Nick, nearly as scary as running around parts of Antrim! 😛 Would you fancy it?
Takes time.
Wow that's a grueling course... The scenery is spectacular though .. 👏👏
Much gruel Kev. Fancy giving it a go?
@@StephenJReid I wouldn't make it up the first hill ,😂😂😂
Fantastic, epic vlog. Feels like I was there with you, minus the cold, the wind, the clouds, the rain, the pain, the rolled ankle and the suffering of course 😆. Looks like you had to make full use of all your kit (except the emergency toilet paper I hope!) on a challenging day. I'm mostly please that you found some local to say hello to.
haha yeah full on day! and thanks! hmmm I didn't use my toilet roll, inhaler, hat, base layer, mid layer or emergency vivvi but glad I had it all with me! Would not want to get into trouble up there!
Fancy giving it a go?
@@StephenJReid I'd love to give it a go! Need to build up to it, maybe in a few years once I find some proper trail legs. I'm doing the Tollymore half in November, then building up to the 2023 London Marathon (which I've had to postpone four times times since 2019, first for an injury and then three times because of the pandemic because who wants to run it virtually or in October), THEN I'll find my proper trail legs. I hope.
@@thomasbjohnston you’ll get there!
8:28...rofl...IYKYK!! Man, that looks like a crazy difficult trek. Beautiful! Can almost see william Wallace e and his men roaming these hills....really great footage!
The Scottish sheep didn't understand me at all 🤣 Would be fun hiking around that in a kilt in bad weather! 🤣
That’s just impressive 😳 Like, really impressive, considering you found the time and balance (!) to film it too 😱
Thanks Emiel! I'm about 20% slower when I'm filming a race at the same time. Impossible to get into a flow state when you are swapping cameras. Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Epic the only thing missing was a horde of orcs You are entitled to feel smug
That’s no way to talk about the Scottish! 😂
Oh wow! Knowing the effort you went into making this video! And it’s in Kinlochleven! 😍 I think I found my next event to aim for even if in few years 😂 thanks for bringing us here…so so difficult but so so beautiful! Would you do it again?
I’d love to do it again but it took me 6 months to train for it and I’d struggle to make the time without it impacting other things. I think I might go back and run one of the trail races
@@StephenJReid wow 6 months is a long time for sure. Did you find it more difficult than marathon? Signing up sounds as a motivation 😅 I’m thinking of doing the same soon - signing up for next year that I can train over the winter.
@@StephenJReid would you maybe share in one of your runs how did you specifically trained for event like this? As I found training plans for marathon but that is a road race rather than this…so I’d be curious what you’ve done over the course of 6months - obviously not every detail but maybe some tips how to train for something like this?
Epic! Loved it! Well done. What an adventure, these events are never rally 'races' they're experiences. Very well documented. Did you get the drone shots another time? (assuming you didn't take the drone with you as well)!
Thanks! Yeah I rarely view an event like this as a race, especially if it’s the first time I’ve been on the route. Yeah some drone footage was from a few days before the race and some was from the day after. Had to hike back up 900m on sore legs 😵
Most brutal race I have participated in! Both descents were awful, thought my knees were going to run away! Back again next year though!
Yup! Hope the knees have recovered! 🙂
I feel your pain. I did the snowdon skyrace this year. Recommend it - well done!
I still need to tick off Snowdon sometime, looks like a fairly steady climb?
@@StephenJReid loads of routes to explore with different levels of skill. Def worth a trip. Check our tryfan and crib goch - stunning 🎥
@@ultrarunneradam thanks! I might be going through that way in November
EPIC!
Thanks! Fancy trying it?
Well, this is the first time i have seen your channel, and blown away, fantastic, beautiful awesome coverage, and well done on surviving, 😉, best wishes from Somerset,
Thanks Jenny! 😁 Hopefully you’ll find some other videos that you’ll enjoy, bit of a mix 🙂 I’ve never been to Somerset, the autumn reached that far south yet?
@@StephenJReid it has, my favourite time of the year, 🎉 trees just starting to turn so may also drive down to the New Forest about an hour away, ☀ next week so hopefully will get a good walk and photos, 🌞
just stuck an order in for some mix ( ty for the code 👍) . Better taste nice 🤛. Joking 😂😂 . Well played on the run , terrain looked horrendous . Would love to get to this stage some time . But hiking is enough for me atm 😂. Makes the mournes look an easy touch 😂
Enjoy! It's not your typical sports drink as it has loads of electrolytes too, but I find it easier to drink as it's not super sweet. Took me a long time to build up to this but it's doable with training. very different terrain from the Mournes!
Great to hear, they have been shipped and will be with you shortly. Enjoy!
@@mixhydration8022 cheers 👌
That was epic. I see now why you feel the way you do now. UTMB next year?
Haha don't think I'm quite ready for that. haven't decided about next year yet, thinking about a few things
Outstanding👏
Thanks George! 🙂
@@F2fntypvvjs 🤣 I'll tell that to the physio
@@StephenJReid my guess is they already know... 😂 Like mine does everytime I come back and they measure 'something' on the little handheld dyno and it's regressed to 'toddler' like hamstring strength
Tough....
Were you happy with the shoes?
Thanks Alan, would you give it a go? Shoes mostly worked well, same shoes I've done all my big Mournes races in. A bit more grip on the boggy muddy sections would have been nice though.
@@StephenJReid Iam a long long way from being able to tackle this.
But....yes😂
@@alanrobinson2229 Just need the right attitude to start! 😁
which software are you using to edit the videos? Great videos!
Thanks. I use Adobe Premiere Pro

@@StephenJReid I'd love too Stephen, though my knees would be in bits for a year or so afterwards 🙁
I can certainly walk it though, and I'd enjoy that for sure 😎
Still an epic hike. I’d like to go back and take my time around it some time.
@@StephenJReid You could spend a while exploring and taking in the views in that area of Scotland.
Lots of photo / drone opportunities 😉
That ridge is a massive noppe
Haha yeah it was a bit scary, although the camera makes it look worse than it was.
About to do the race - what was your time? I'm dearly hoping 17:02 was the hour and not the elapsed time...
7hrs 22mins. Tough race. But enjoy!
@@StephenJReid thanks!
I'd been hoping for 6hrs 30, but I think I'll be slower than you...
My videos make me look a lot faster than I was! I trained for months for this to make sure I didn’t miss the halfway cut off
Hi! Great video!
I would like to ask, what is this effect 14:13 ? Thx
