My grandmother made a similar "poor man's pudding" but made the sauce (water, butter, brown sugar, a little vanilla) in a metal cake pan on top of the stove. The cake was thinner (a little thicker than pancake batter) and "drop dollops" of the batter into the syrup before baking. It was a staple dessert at our house.
It appears lots of people have similar stories I dont recall anything resembling this when I was growing up however my grandma did occasionally make a type of bread pudding
