Last time I had BP like this was over 50 years so I will be making it with memories of days gone by and a big smile on my face, thank you. 💯💯💯💯💯💯👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
My Mum soaked bread or a few hours, squeezed out excess liquid then added a tub of mixed spice, suet, sugar and mixed fruit. No measuring and it was always so, so yummy. But, I’ll give this recipe a go. It looks so good and your portions were certainly generous.
My granny did the same, soaked the bread in water to soften but then squeezed it out until 'dry'. Then suet, mixed spice, mixed fruit, 1 egg and sugar. She didn't measure either as she'd been making it for ever. And then cooked for 1.5hrs - I did get her to write an approximation of the recipe down but haven't tried it yet!
My most favourite 'stodgy' pudding is Clootie Dumpling....I can't wait for Hallowe'en over here in Northern Ireland, the time when this pudding is boiled and eaten! DELISH! 🤗🤗🤗😋😋😋
I’m a Glaswegian and my gran made clootie dumplings for birthdays and Christmas; with a silver sixpence wrapped in baking paper and hidden in the mixture. Hoping to see a clootie dumpling on this channel soon! 🤞🏽🤞🏽
I used to work at a victorian living museum in the bakery and we used to make bread pudding every be week with the leftover bread. This has made me feel nostalgic and want to make bread pud.
Mmmm, this looks delicious! I haven't had bread pudding in probably 20 years (and loved it then!), so I'm definitely going to have to give this a go! Thanks!
One of my grandmothers used to make a savory bread pudding. Basically, start with a bread dressing -- onions, celery, mushrooms, herbs like sage and winter savory -- put it in a pan, add an egg and milk custard mix, and bake. Oddly, this was often a breakfast item: Gran would let it sit in the refrigerator overnight and bake it in the morning, where we had it with fried ham and scrambled eggs.
This looks so delish! I can't wait to try it so I'll have to get the grandkids over. I made them a bread & butter pudding and they were so taken by the fact that I made a pudding from bread and that they actually liked it so, I think I'll be in the good books with this one. Cheers. 🇳🇿🏴
Oh my! Your bread pudding looks so good. In America we usually only put raisins in it but mixed peel sounds so much better! We do pour whiskey sauce (a southern thing) over it sometimes which is very good!
Hi Cheryl, I made your bread pudding for Christmas dinner, and it was a hit. I told my daughter you said, ' would you look at that stodgy brick' and we both cracked up. Thanks for the recipe and have a great New Year.
I love bread pudding. Thank you. Have you tried a marmalade glaze on either bread pudding or bread and butter pudding? I love it on both. I also when I cook sausages, I fry an onion add it to the sausages and put a couple of spoons of marmalade on the mix just before the end of cooking which gives the sausages a beautiful stickiness.
This is lovely 😋😋😋😋I am so happy I found your chanel and I love your accent and particularly the way you say " delicious"I watch most of your recipe videos,I am from Bombay,India
Thank you Cheryl for this recipie, it's as I remember my Mum making it, but, I could never get it quite right. Now I have guidelines 😊. I don't have to make it to know that it tastes exceptionally good because Mum's did all those years ago. Rekindled happy childhood memories and again, a big thank you for reminding me of those old days.
This is a great recipe. Thank you for sharing. Lots of flavour and very nice texture without the greasy fingers. I've always made mine with marg or butter because that's what my mom did. 😊 Nice to have a choice. 😋
I can't wait to try this one! I have read about things like this for decades, as I like a lot of UK authors. Imagine being in the US in the 1960s & 70s and reading a stodgy pudding and trying to understand what that is with no internet to help you! I've tried so many things that I know from reading but have never had the chance to try them until I found this channel. You have made many things that the name was familiar but I had no idea what it was exactly. Good job 👍
@TheRenaissanceman65 You know, of course, that I grew up in the appalachian mountains and we only had a small public library for the entire county. It was located in the county seat (that would be the largest town in the county) Anyway, our library had an abundance of UK mystery/crime/thiller authors! I was surrounded by the UK in that tiny mountain community so I was always trying to figure out the difference between what we called the same item. Much, much easier today, that's for sure! No UK cookbooks. Are you well, Renaissanceman? I haven't seen you in a while.
I am absolutely making this! Bread pudding is my favorite dessert of all time. I’m going to make a whiskey custard sauce to pour over the slices!!!!!! Thank you!!!!
one of my favourites when I was a kid was when my mother cooked leek pudding - leeks inside a suit dumpling, tied in muslin and boiled - it's called a pudding but it's savoury, we used to have it with ham
my mom used to make the best bread pudding that looked exactly like yours! Sadly she never used a recipe, so I will definitely be using yours! thankyou! 🤗
Hiya Cheryl hope you are well. Massive fan of bread pudding! Glad you mentioned custard tho in public! Some people look at me like I’m weird when I mention it! ‘You can’t have that with custard!’ They say! 🤣
@TheRenaissanceman65 What's the custard? Is there a recipe for that? I LOVE bread pudding & where I've recently moved, they use a bourbon butter sauce over it.
I love bread pudding - in the 60s I worked in Cardiff at Rapports and on our lunch break my friends and I would walk over Splott Bridge to buy bread pudding from a little sweet shop that was there. I think the old lady made it herself. I’m going to have a go at this myself and bask in the memories of places long gone 🙂
We put ginger powder and chopped crystallized ginger to make ginger bread pudding - do try it's delicious! This is a very luxurious version with milk and cream, ours is stale ends of loaves saved in the freezer soaked in water. Still delicious 😋
Hello Sheryl, great Chanel and video’s, thanks for passing on your tips and meals. I just wanted to write in to say that I found that tearing up the scrap bread for the Bread Pudding, I found that some of the processed bread you buy today remained a soggy lump, cooked and all that but not like when we use old fashioned bakers bread. So this time I liquidised the bread and have found that all the ingredients seem to blend together much better, takes a bit longer but in a food processor a couple of minutes that’s all. The result is a nice smooth pudding and no lumps. Thanks again for all you ideas and tips 👍 . Bob Oxfordshire South of England …
The bread pudding I was brought up with is made with bread, saltanas, sugar, mixed spice, water. Soak bread in water till moist then mix all ingredients together .then put into a tin and cook for 1 hour.
I've just made some now from memory in s roasting tin. My mum had an old recipe book with her cooker years ago. My dad went to Greggs & bought a piece of bread pudding for 80p. So I started making a batch of them for him. He can't swallow properly now but I'm going to try him with some that's blended with custard ♥️👍
oh god , i havent seen this for a very long time thank god lol , my mum used to make this and i hated it , soggy googy , like rock hard on the outside , but we had to eat it as money was tight and she did her best , but i never forgot it i can see it now in my head , in the big tin omg , such a nightmare thinking ive got to eat this lol i remember the texture thanks for bringing back the memories i think lol i wont be making it, i was about 10 back then im 54 now and th e memorys of this will stick with me
I love Bread Pudding and so does my husband. I've tried making it before using my mum's recipe but that involved soaking the bread in water and squeezing out the excess, it always turned out a sloppy mess. This looks much easier and I'm definitely going to give it a try. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the recipe, Cheryl! I have not tried making bread pudding yet but this is a good recipe. Here in the Commonwealth [of Kentucky], we serve our bread pudding in a warm bourbon sauce. The pudding soaks it up especially well!
Hello! Whereas I won't be making this particular recipe (don't like dried fruits myself) I just love to hear you talking. My partner is from Troon, and you sound just like my mum-in-law. Anyways, keep up those lovely videos. All the best from Germany
Gosh, that looks heavenly Cheryl. I have never heard of it before and I am only in Durham so not so far away from you! Looks far tastier than bread and butter pudding which never appeals to me. I see someone has mentioned leek puddings. My late mother used to make wonderful ones, served with mince and lashings of vinegar. Any chance you might do one for us please ?
@Isaura. My hubby makes a mean leek pudding. It's basically a dumpling mix with leeks added. His mam used to cook it on a flat sheet in the oven about 2" thick then she sliced it into portions. 🙂
This style of 'Bread Pudding' is very similar to what u see in the Bakery in the UK ( except more Golden in colour) but really nicly baked, with plenty of body!. This is one of those desserts that brings back fond childhood memories. It’s probably good that my husband won’t eat it because I would end up eating way more than my share.
Loved your video! I've been searching for classic bread pudding recipes on youtube, but they all looked too modern, and then I found yours, and it just took me back to my mum making it every other week. My question is how long can you keep it for? If I were to put it in a plastic container, would it be ok for about a week? I wouldn't want to freeze it, but I couldn't eat all that bread pudding by myself in a couple of days!
My earliest memories is making this with my mum in the 1960 she’d save all the old bread then once a fortnight we’d make a huge roasting tin full 🥰🥰
Did she leave all the bread out to get dry so that it wouldn't get mouldy?
Last time I had BP like this was over 50 years so I will be making it with memories of days gone by and a big smile on my face, thank you. 💯💯💯💯💯💯👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
I hail from East Anglia Suffolk. And my Mum would make this all the time to feed 8 hungry boys. Normally munching a slab as I walked to school.
This looks delicious 😋 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻
Lovely to see you again :)

Was the texture the same as in this recipe? Did your mother bake it or steam it? Did you eat it with custard?
What did she soak it in? Milk?
@@typower9 my mum used to do a similar recipe and we used to eat it with anything!!!. An East London staple
