You are right. I miss that some of the lyrics at that time were so whimsical yet articulate. When you see the actual realities of some of the big bands in music documentaries you can see how aspirational they without the yuppie connotation of the word which followed after.
So this is the most popular song from the band that turned down $25,000 to have one song featured in GTA6? LOL, Can you imagine turning down the opportunity to pay to have your song immortalized in a game with 200 Million players. Even for someone PAYING for this opportunity, $25K would be the cheapest promotion ever. But these guys turned DOWN free money AND that exposure? ROFL. It must be a generation gap thing. Hilarious.
I remember buying this album and listening to it over and over. Just saw the band yesterday at Lets Rock Festival 41 years later and they were fantastic. Early 80’s British Synth pop was just so good.
It is today perhaps. It was not underrated at its time and neither was the band. They seem to have been forgotten lately though which is a shame and very much undeserved.
Wow. I've just heard this on bbc 6 music and was blown away that for a track that is 41 years old, it sounds so fresh. Forget Temptation, this is one of if not their finest moment on record.

Como Dj , empezé en los 80 ' y llenaba pista con este tema . Brutal la línea de bajo y los sintetizadores son geniales . Lp con mucha calidad y buen sonido.....
I call myself a fan and this is the first time I have ever seen this video. I’m appalled ha ha. I don’t remember it being played on any of the shows I used to watch as a kid.
Why won't people shut up about the bass line? I like a parrot learned a new word, nobody is talking about the vocals, the Rhodes, or the mighty LInn drum?
Spot the alarm-chronograph watch at 2:14. Seiko, about £160 quid when they came out, a few rich kids at school had them. Within 2 or 3 years, the Casio came out: same watch (plastic strap): £6.99.
Had a clip of this song on a casette for years and didn't know what it was. Thought it was Human League for many years. Really captures the early 80's.
Fantastic band live. Unlike other bands with the Thatcherism banner flying high, they didn't sell their souls for a quick buck. A great antidote for the yuppie decadence of the 1980s . Fascist Groove , more relevant today than ever. Wake up! Your beds are burning.

Yes, the only 2 songs of H17 I remember ever hearing at the time were Temptation and "Crushed by the Wheels of Industry" - the rest did indeed pass me by I suppose I was too busy listening to DD and Spandau and ABC
Definitely has a distinct sound of its' own, probably the programming interface is what lead to it being on so many songs and also responsible for the sound and style of the music it was used on.
Someone needs to go out and find John Wilson and give him a retroactive Grammy for best bass of 1981. Killer.
😯 Great Scott...such great finger plucking.
Heaven 17 was a much better act than the League...
I would have to go with Mick Karn’s playing on Japan’s Tin Drum album but I hear you.
And he was only 17 years old at the time.
Hell yeah!
Classic 80's Story-telling. I miss this time in music!

The Wave 103
Heaven 17 were and still are Genius of The 80´s !
Saw them at London O2 Arena Sunday 15 Dec 2024. Brilliant.
Years ahead of their time.
Their music resonates after over 40 years.
I remember buying this album and listening to it over and over. Just saw the band yesterday at Lets Rock Festival 41 years later and they were fantastic. Early 80’s British Synth pop was just so good.
Lucky you!
I hope one day to see them live !
One of the Heaven 17 songs that has gotten better with age. Hugely influential on dance music for the next 25 years too.
totally awesome bass lines. Classic song!
Gabriel Rearte
Have you seen the 2010, live in sheffield performance?
Hell no
Gabriel Rearte Search, and watch it.
carbiify Yes sir!
Hanging on to the bass line is the best part of the song The video couild help explain the excesses of the 80's
Apparently Princess Di loved this song. Who can blame her, sooo goood! 👑
I think humans love this song
*Brit New Wave!*
Love the clean sound of this track, clear vocals... lovely!
the woman (Emma Relph) was in 'Day of the Triffids' with John Duttine 1981- just thought I'd add that.
I am a great fan of Heaven 17 since 1983
Good spot. She is very good in 'Triffids' and an attractive character actress.
She didn't do much acting, her last role was in the 1990 movie The Witches
God, thank you sooo much! I knew i saw her before but i couldn´t place where!
Wikipedia says the great female singer on the choruses is Josie James.
Emma is also in a 2022 video short called Reg & Regina: ruclips.net/video/UeklLbU7SOU/видео.html
Arguably one of the best basslines and lead synth solo’s of 1981 in one track
Busy, but well played.
One of Heaven 17's most underrated songs. The bass riffs on this track are to die for.
strongly agree.
AGREED
To be fair , no one give a Rats Arse about Bass back then
But good Point ;)

Heaven 17 were NEVER under- rated!

Possibly or Let me go
Great underrated song with a good message. We all aspire for a life of luxury and decadence, but what are you willing to sacrifice to get it?
This could easily be a Jamiroquai situation (chorus, anyway). Heaven 17 still blows my mind. Elegant AF and totally underrated.

Both names come from movies. Duran Duran was a character in "Barbarella", Heaven 17 was a fictional band mentioned "A Clockwork Orange".
It's so very observant of you to remember that in great detail.

The visual narrative contained within most early Heaven 17 music videos such as this is brilliant. Love it! Great inspiration!
Best bass player alive, John Andrews Wilson! Incredible playing, incredibly funky!
this comment is stupid.

You can be the first one to enjoy the consequences of that equation. Don't think you'll find it so romanticn then!
I agree with your assessment; the only word I would change would be 'calculus'. I would replace it with 'quantum mechanics'.

Penthouse and Pavement • Lyrics
Heaven 17
Sweat my youth away
With the rules we have to play
Speeding through your magazine
Pistol, pavement, no T.V.
Talk and talk
No time, night time
Burnt inside
Here comes the daylight, here comes my job
Uptown in the penthouse or downtown with the mob
Here comes the night time, here comes my role
Goodbye to the pavement, hello to my soul
Now here comes my job
Credit, bleeding with the mob
Dreams become ideals
No one knows the way I feel
Love to love
Daytime, right time
All my life
Here comes the daylight, here comes my job
Uptown in the penthouse or downtown with the mob
Here comes the night time, here comes my role
Goodbye to the pavement, hello to my soul
Feel safe in the crowd
An no one admits they're crying aloud
My career fits like a glove
Knowing no orders can come from above
Work and work
Full time, part time
Anytime at all
As you face the wall
God make it this time or never at all
Before your chance has gone
Captain this lead role and you'll be the one
Shine and shine
This time, my time
Make me free at last
