  • "If I can't win back my family's honour by being a soldier. Then I'll do it by finding the lost eagle"
This is an underrated film and soundtrack! The Eagle is one of the few depictions that I have seen on Roman Britain. This film is based on a novel, so I'm not fully sure this was based on a real event. However, the film displays the sentimental importance of a Roman legion's standard brilliantly. Many standards had different depictions of the Emperor, Serpents, and of course Eagles, along with other imagery. If a legion was to lose their standard, it would face dishonour. This is because the standards had 'SPQR' imprinted on them and so this represented Rome. To lose this, would mean great disrespect upon Rome itself! These were carried into battle as an intimidation tactic to say that Rome is here and is very powerful.

It’s kind of a shame this movie got so lost in the weeds and forgotten. It’s no Gladiator but it’s a very good film, with fantastic cinematography, musical scores and an interesting look at a place in history that isn’t touched upon much in media.

Damn if that isn't well done.
Channing Tatum is often overlooked, imo, for how good of an actor he can be. I won't say he is the best, but damn if he can't act with the best of them. When I first watched this film I was fully immersed in the character he portrayed, someone looking for redemption, and honor, while understanding that he had a legacy to live up to.
Truly one of the better films about Rome and her legions in recent memory. There were historical inaccuracies, but I feel like those can be over looked for the most part just because of how good this film was.

Brit here who loves his history, specifically pre-blackpowder. Far as im aware the lost legion and lost eagle is very much real. In fact to most brits who share such stories still, it's all but fact the lost legion disappeared in Britannica.
The only thing nobody knows is where the Legion was lost. All official records for the time period are destroyed. Either through the passage of time or to cover up a disaster none know. Regarding the lost legion and Pictland (Scotland) all we know is at the very least, a patrol or two (at least) was wiped out and raiders kept bypassing the usual fort system, hence the need for Hadrian's wall.
The thing that ultimately makes it so interesting and strange, is that the missing legion was one of Rome's finest, with a long and glorious track record. Basically, something colossal must have happened to be wiped from Roman history intentionally (still no proof this happened.) Such as losing the inanimate representation of Rome's Power (the golden eagle) to a bunch of savage barbarians... and then failing to get it back.

As far as im aware from my own research it is in fact more likely that the legion was simply disbanded due to casualty rates and dispersed among other legions around the empire. Thus the reason that there are no records of the legion existing past its point of "disappearing" is as simple as it didn't exist anymore.
Although of course it could be possible that it did infact suffer these casualties from some sort of battle that depleted it. This I think is why its so fascinating as we can truely never know just like all aspects of history, we look at it in context to other sources and aspects of the time.
I find it unlikely that it would be wiped from the records as defeats such as this are by no means uncommon in roman history, pre or post empire. This is why I fall under the category of it having been disbanded. The XII Fulminata was ambushed at Beth Horon and subsequently destroyed with the loss of 6000 men. Why would this not have had extensive information 'destroyed' or 'lost'. The only equivalent argument is that the scottish border was at the very edge of the known world as opposed to Judea, yet otherwise there is no reason for the destruction of a legion to be wiped from history for losing.

    • @TheStormfury
      @TheStormfury 2 года назад +4

@@campo4108 The only thing i have to add to everything you said, which does make a whole lot of sense, is why?
We know Rome is far from perfect and made many mistakes, especially regarding their legions. But the Lost Legion was one of the best before they disappeared, so why not keep those legions traditions and pride going, even if every single person inside of it is freshly recruited?
And i did do my research on this as well, The last confirmed location of the Legion is Frisia, however we also know they had orders to go... somewhere.
The next roman document to mention them, or lack of them, is a census type document that listed Rome's active legions and current locations. They were not on it, not ever mentioned again.
Destroyed and disbanded Legions did not have that level of obscurity. They battle of teutonberg forest for example.
Either way, the true information is lost, my theory could be right, yours could be, but in the end, unless we can speak to the dead or time travel, we are unlikely to ever know the truth.

Current historians have found references to the IX Legio well beyond 120 AD. So the legion was not wiped out. It may have performed poorly but the legion survived about 70 years longer, if I remember correctly. The current thinking is that a cohort was possibly lost. That is possible as the Roman Army was very modular in 21st century terms. The lead centurions, the Primus Pilus, often had independent combat command.

Firstly, there wasn't 5000 men present. They legion had just returned from operations in Ireland and were under-strength. There was also a single cohort of 480 legionaries plus supporting staff in modern day Hungary, on detached duties.
When the IX Legion Hispania entered Caledonia (Scotland), they were at about two thirds of their strength, roughly around 3500 men and half again in support, such as slaves, cooks and other support.
Also, the reason we know about the ambush is because some of the people in the column survived and managed to report the attack when they reached Roman territory. The Roman governor at the time decided to remove all records of the Legion's activity, so as to protect the honour of Rome.

A thoroughly enjoyable edit. Good work. Maybe you might screen an even broader cross section of films about Rome do do something similar on leadership. Might be interesting.

Thank you! It’s a film called The Eagle that came out in 2011. It was released in cinemas at the time and I remember seeing posters/advertisements on the side of buses.

People in civilian life, do not know the sacrifice soldiers give. Jesus even said There is no greater love than the sacrifice of one man to lay down his life for another. Our men and women who fight in the front line for our country, give the ultimate to fight for the freedoms we enjoy. We can also see that in all the other past wars we have fought in. This movie was put together well and has given us a small inkling of family and country.

It is curious but no European country that has been a Roman province denies that past, on the contrary we are very proud of having been Romanized, except of course Greece, which Hellenized Rome. On the other hand, North Africa, which was one of the most prosperous and cultured areas of the Roman Empire and where there are magnificent archaeological remains, there is no awareness of that past, Islam has devastated everything.

Interesting movie, very enjoyable and a nice roll for Channing Tatum BUT the historical value is quitte questionable. The screenwritters somehow though that a roman legion was, by extension, similar to what the US army. The choreographer doesn't know how a centurion would fit on the fight ( NOT on the center but on the right side and on the first row, with the signifcer, the banner). the gladius was on the SIDE of the shield, to stab the enemy, and not on top and the Testudo, the turtle, was for the assault of cities or when they were closing the enemy, not a regular thing to do "because yes", it was to protect the soldiers against arrows, dards and other projectiles.

It's honestly a travesty no one on the writer's team or the production has even played Rome: Total War at least once.... or else they'd know exactly what you're mentioning here

It’s not a true story, Marcus is made up. The film is historical fiction, but is based on the Roman ninth legion (real), which mysteriously disappeared from all Roman historical records.
