- While exploring the remote Greek island of Ikaria in the Aegean Sea I came across a strange stone arch partially hidden in bushes by the sea. What the heck is this thing?

Thanks a lot for watching and safe journeys!
I know what this is because I live in ikaria. It is around 150 to 200 years old and it was a water mill which was used to make flour. The wall was continuing from the top to the bottom and water was flowing in it.
That makes a lot of sense.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos I thought it was a Turkish toilet drain. 🙂
Yah, sounds right, but its not built by the same beings that built the megalithic ruins in the rest of the video ( see the construction difference).
@@junipersnow1 You are right they have being built around 2000 years apart
It may have been windmill because Greece doesn't get much rain but plenty of wind on coast, but who knows, maybe not.
Hello Gabriel...greetings from a Greek who lives in Portland Oregon....your home city....happy to see you discovering the beauties of Ellada...
Γειά σου κι εσένα 😘
Greece is just such a beautifully historic and culturally rich country. Can't wait to go this year finally, probably going to let tourist season pass first though
lucky you :)
Drakanos Tower. One of the best preserved examples of Athenian military watchtowers from the Hellenistic period, Drakano Fortress and its fortifications were built during the time of Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC.br>
This 44 foot high limestone tower served as an observation point for Aegean Sea traffic sailing the channel between Ikaria and Samos.
The tower was part of a larger garrison and eventual Ikarian city that was noted for its wine production. In 1827 the tower was damaged by Greek naval forces who used it for target practice. Near the tower stands the solitary Church of St. Georgis, and below the church is the remote sandy beach of St. Georgis. Access to Drakano is via a dirt road leading from the seaside village of Faros. The road ends where a footpath begins, and visitors must then hike about 15 minutes north to the fortress area.

Thanks for the briefing pal
Shut up !! is not !! this is a mill
WOW!!! The beauty of that water!!!!!❤️❤️❤️
There is always a local historian or sleuth who is willing to share their stories with curious strangers. Gabriel, you don't seem to reach out for the locals when you are travelling around small villages and places not very well known. If you actually do reach out, you hardly show it. Locals are always great sources of information.
Like your Videos about this low tourist and unknown greek islands!!
Man, i was totally holding my breath that you don't step on serpents in those bushes. So glad you made it to the road. I was in your situation many times and too chicken poop not to turn around through the original long disappointing way. Thanks for the vid from my favourite place in the world
This place looks like paradise. Would love to live here
I never knew there are so many smaller islands. Fascinating and no tourists 👍
please visit Pilio if you havent already. Amazing beaches, a lot of history and more. I had so much fun exploring the water caves
Lot of history in this place
Can't resist feeling the same interest in anything peaking Gabriel's curiosity during these exploratory hikes
Another great vid
Great seeing your documentation from Ikaria. The home of my fathers family. at 16:16 these were set up for making concrete when they built the long pier i the harbor in Agios Kirikos. Before they had the new pier the waves used to hit all the way up to the houses and cafées in the plaza.. there are some famous pictures of that in postcards etc.
Keep up the good work and very welcome to Ikaria.. 💓
So much great content so close together great video 👍
Thank you Gabriel.
Thank you.......Gab.......sick in bed.......these videos are just WONDERFULLY UPLIFTING ❤️
Right on, get well.
You must visit a hidden paradise, the Greek Island of Samothrace, you will love it!
Hi Gabriel, I always love to watch your videos but especially when you are in Greece. It is my most favorite holiday country because of the weather and the beaches, the food but most of all the wonderful people. Keep it up Gabriel, I'll definitely keep watching! 👍☀️
So many monuments in my country 🇬🇷 and you can feel emotions and energies from the past

100% positive this was built by aliens to dock their space yachts.
We Icarians are the closest one can get to aliens. We are from a different time dimension
What a beautiful island 🏝😎 definitely an island to explore & get lost 😊🌴 thanks for sharing your journeys Gabe 😌🙏🏼
The watermill of Ksylosyrtis.
Wow 6 months ago you was in Iceland with a cost on. I would stay on those islands.
Gabe you are amazing in "reading" buildings, guessing their origin, the date they were constructed etc! Kudos!
Hey Gabriel you should definitely check ancient Messini in South Western Peloponnese, you are gonna love it!
So enjoy your videos. Your curiosity, sense of adventure and commentary never disappoint. Thank you for taking us along.
Definitely have to visit Icaria on my next trip to Greece🙂. Beautiful island!
I had a great time on Ikaria in March 2022. I explored the island on foot and also rented a scooter. I also stayed in a mountain stonehouse.
really excellent always love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩
Fantastic video Gabe ..............greek islands are amazing
Nice choice from you applying YANNI music to the intro 💯
Something to do with the late 18th century monastery of Lefkados Evangelismos? An online travel guide "zeus guide" says: "The small complex is built on the site of a spring which originally fed a couple of watermills below. The remains of one is beside the road, and **another on the cliff edge above the shore, clearly visible for its graceful arch which supports the water course and chute**."
I searched for "monastery of Lefkados Evangelismos" on Google Maps, and there's an aerial photo of the shoreline (posted Apr 2022) which shows the structures you saw: the arch on the shore and the other structure up on the roadside.
Drakano tower, was the highest tower of the acropolis that you were at. Was built around 2300 years ago, approximately during grade alexander’s era. Except of watch tower it was a : “friktoría”. That means that it belonged to a very long group of towers that were transmitting messages, made of distict fire or smoke types. Were able to send a message from persia to macedonia relatively very fast. Each friktoria was visible from the previous and the next one.😉
I see, thanks for the info.

SHUT UP DUDE !!!!! THATS NOT 2300 years old why you making this up ????
Maybe a sluice to drain water from a road?
I miss Greece! Watching your videos makes me wanna go there for a month and work from there! I really need to make some courage and do that one time! :D
Gabriel thank you so much for making feel like I am in Greece - please be careful
You're so lucky it's amazing there . I could have done this with my greek husband but he was incapacitated in a car accident .
From your map you appear to be reasonably close to Paralia Therma famous amongst many on the island for their hot springs. These were sacred places, it may be that you discovered a ruined aqueduct which delivered hot water to a villa or temple long having been eroded into the sea.
The tower site near the end of the video seems like a megalithic site, big blocks, cyclopean walls, those are the truly mysterious ruins, also found in other parts of the Mediterranean like Alatri in Italy. God only knows who the builders were.
If you wanna know who the builders are..watch Prof. Dr. Heinrich Kusch..you want belife it..and the vatican know everything..all about energetic reasons...the vaitcan says, grund/fundamental linien..energetic ways, and the meghalitic buildings were build on it..very old, very advanced transport systems...until the 16jh we humans were trading with them...they life subterran and were on that planet looong before us..our history is completle wrong..i know sounds crazy but its true..prof kusch has some documents leaked to him from vatican..
Wow Gabriel! Beautiful finds! Greece never disappoints! 😊❤🌊☀️😎
looks like ''water way" for me ,there are 2 explanations . 1st is for a mile 2nd is for a ''hamam' first option is probably the correct. in second option is to carry Ikarias therapy water to a kind of baths near the beach.. [then it has to have another construction under this . The only sure is that a earthquake destroyed the building. There is an iron "filter "" in the water way as it seams.. its maybe to stop stones come to the final end. You can ask locals...there must be a myth for it.. ask some because you can have different answers for sure. Enjoy Greece as much you can. There are many things to see and learn. Same constructions in huge size you can find in south Europe made by the Romans made for carying water to their towns
Although a Greek , never been to Ikaria. It looks like an uploading from mining construction to the sea. It looks very solid, and that's unusual. Also it;s not very old, probably 100 - 150 or 200 years old the most.
It is a watermill
Hello Gabriel,
Ikaria is known for its people who live very long, don't believe in consumption, have no stress they open their businesses whenever they wake up. Slow life is the key,as scientists studied their way of living.
If you must know, us Greeks originate from alien beings which used those interstellar gateways to travel through the dimensions of space ! :D
Gabriel you should not leave Greece next destinations Samos, Lesbos and Limnos there is so much to explore there! Think about it especially Lesbos and Limnos my home island!
Water mill, to make fluor. Same are in Spain. We have seen them on Tenerife-village Vilaflor.
Thank you sir...I would call that really heaven for a day...just endless beauty..
Hello good sir, love your videos, discovered your channel a few days ago. Nice content.. Since my Mother comes from Fournoi (a small island near Ikaria and Samos)it would be nice if you visited that place also, its small but beautiful in a wild way.
Samos is my favourite island in greece.. but ikaria looks amaizing too
17:40 Nealia Beach! I got there by the tricky path from Therma. 30 minutes approx.
i was so worried that u ll miss the flight😆
Wow, I have never seen such a beautiful blue water, definitely I must go to Greece island some day…thanks for sharing Gabriel. Take care
Greece has over 4400 islands and islets. This is Ikaria
@@questmarq7901 Six thousand islands. 227 of them are inhabited.
maybe its an old mine and they use the water flow to separate the valuable elements and load them to ships
someone got it right... i just saw the pinned message
I know you’re just trying to make some content, but I’m sure all you had to do was just ask a local what it is or was 🙂
Muted That Crappy Intro Music. Great Show! Peace
Maybe bring your drone next time. Then you could see that part of the structure you couldn’t climb to.
This is an aspect of Greece I love. Thanks for another cool video!
I can't remember Dyonisuius, except the name is familiar. So I looked it up. I found a vid called The Cult of Bachus, Livy's Bacchanalian Affair, by Dan Costa Academicus. .... and... whoa, the history seems like it never ended according to many the rich and monarchy still practise these things in hidden places.
To me it looks like it was some sort of small aqueduct system that then feeds into a cistern. But the arched entrances on the bottom of the round tower kinda shoot that theory out, unless that was just the entrance and there used to be a ceiling that helped keep the water in the upper half of the tower.
That or it was like you were saying, part of a larger system of buildings that went further up the hill relating to the Church
It is amazing how you can make it feel like I an there myself. I enjoy it so much 😀
I can definitively say it is the thing from 2001 Space Odyssey, The Who's Next Cover and the Led Zeppelin record Presence. Other than that, can't help you.
This was likely for farm fields. They would pipe the water to as close as possible to the crops. My guess because you see this in Japan.
drain system, water fountain, healing bath springs
Awesome discovery, look like this is a water channel or Aqueduct use to supply water for the SEA VOYAGER. Thanks for sharing, big liked#327.
This is the most important arch in the history of human kind. Under this arch, Adam and Eve conceived their first baby.
Mystery solved.
Ιt is a Water-Tower for a water mill. Usually only the Water-Towers survive in time after the end of the function. The arch is supporting the channel which brings the water to the mouth of the conical vertical funnel (fluim) of the tower leading the water with vehemence to the tirl. I would date it to the 16th-17th century.
Thanks for the info.
"This looks alien technology". Future kid said, "look, that stones couldnt be cut with those straight lines"
the previous beach was better for marine photography
Paul Cook is your guy for all these old ruins.
What happened with the woman from last episode?
Aqueduct and cisterns system. Not ancient you can tell from the size and the shape of the stones. Likely Byzantine/eastern roman. I guess medieval. Makes sense to collect the water that flows in streams from the mountains and during rain, in lower elevations.
That jump @ 4:55 had me stressed for a second! Nice find Gabriel. Btw- Love the Greek videos. I am also American & have lived in Athens the last 4 years. Thanks for exposing these obscurities - islands & sites alike - that inspire me to do some more exploration!
Looking like an aqua dock b.c. times.
Hi Gabriel, Fascinating stuff it appears the word Farros which is the name of a Village on the Island you were at is a wheat or grain. Farro is a high-fiber, high-protein whole-grain wheat that's similar in appearance to barley, although it's slightly larger and more oblong. Like barley, it has a chewy texture and nutty flavor. It can be used in a variety of dishes like soups, salads, and even breakfast dishes. This is the importance of the Island as a food source.
Faros is lighthouse in Greek. Comes from the name of the island where Alexandria's lighthouse in Egypt was placed
@@GioBallball That's funny that you say that because the word Faro in Spanish means lighthouse. The words are remarkably similarly spelled, it has a double meaning.
@@wilfredotorres6628 wow! Still probably the root is the same. The island in Egypt. Med :D
Surely the locals would Know. Why not ask them? Greetings from Belgium.
The round structure that looks like a castle is probably a “Fliktoria”. A warning tower that used fire to warn the city (through a chain of other similar towers) of incoming pirates or intruders
If I remember well in the Fliktories there was also a kind of water tank that had a number of text messages in the different levels of it's walls so that with the first fire signal the guard had to to start releasing water from the tank and with the second signal seal the tank so that the water level would align with the corresponding message transmitted by the first tower. Pretty sophisticated system!
One slight correction. It is Fryktories(Phryctoriae) and not Fliktories...
More beaches than you can shake a stick at!
Behind drakano tower, there’s the most beautiful beach of ikaria: agios grorgios beach🤫
Aqueducts? not certain
70 bucks a night is expensive? Bro make some more money
This guy should visit the Congo and more of Africa. I like Kenya 🦁
Landscape has eroded and the structure is part of a building that fell down the hill into the ocean?! Who knows.
Gabriel,. We are seniors and want to travel to Greece next spring. What would be the best island to stay on and take day trips to other islands. Your videos inspire us and remind me of how beautiful Greece is. Thanks.
Paros and Naxos would be good islands to look into.
Indeed. Naxos, Paros, Antiparos and Koufonissi are close enough for a day trip. However day trips with a ferry are not feasible for many islands, it depends on the timetables. Spring is low season and you'll have less choice of routes. You can do day trips with small boats, that carry a handful of passengers and usually take you around the beaches of neighbouring islands, but again maybe they won't be operating in spring. Another choice, to avoid the to and fro, is island hopping, which most people do. Tinos and Syros, together with the above, could be a choice for that. They are relatively quiet, without the crazy nightlife, and have good connections. Syros is different than the other Cyclades, in that it has a neoclassical town and not many beaches. Tinos has quite a few hilltop villages and a choice of beaches. You'll probably need a car to get around on the islands (except the small Koufonissi), as the buses can be a hassle and some lines don't operate during the low season. Late spring is a very good season, you'll avoid the insane crowds, pay less, have good weather and avoid the heatwaves of summer. They can be debilitating, especially for seniors. With 39°C it is not a good idea to roast on the beach or walk around at midday!
@@topowwow Thanks for this info. I'm going to print it and refer to it when we finalize our plans next year. Good tip about the timing of our trip. Late spring, May or early June, might be best. Cheers.
I enjoyed following you on this adventure - happy trails!
In Greek it’s called a lithari
Stone mill grinder in English
An archaeology mystery case. That's intriguing.
My bet is a wine luge. Those ancient Greeks knew how to party.
Loving your Greek videos
Watering station for boats
it looks like a watermill, maybe from the 50s or 60s era.....
Must be part of an aqueduct system.
One large market share of Greek territory was olive oil tree's, it probably want back thousands of years. P.S. Help save the olive oil tree's. ;-))
‘One last thing’. There’s definitely a touch of Detective Colombo about you Gab.
Maybe it lifted up water with an Archimedes screw since it is near the sea.
I’ve been to Drakano. Nice short hike.
There’s supposed to be great bouldering on the island! I’ve wanted to go there for that (yes I’m a climber) and your video REALLY inspired me!
I also went to Kalymnos which is famous for climbing: ruclips.net/video/BYUaKBGMs9w/видео.html
The first one is a water mill. Tens like that are located all over the island. They were used until the middle 20th century. Where you were there is a second one just above the one you were. Both belong to the monastery, who’s church you were looking at. Water mills are preindustrial machines. Were being built all the way from antiquity to 20th century, along with windmills
Cool, good to know.
Awesome ! Thank you 🙏
Love your channel. I know it’s your thing to go to off the forbidden paths when it comes to Greek island’s. You need to show the night life too. What is there yo do at night? Not clubbing, walk at night if there’s a life!
