Yup! So true! Born and raised in New York myself, the MTA public transportation system sucks! All the stuff pointed out in the short, plus the increase in violent crimes for the past few years (and counting!) so far 😓 It’s why I only take the bus, even the express bus despite how much more it costs. The buses and subways are a necessity, which is why many of us still use them despite how bad it is. It’s a shame 😞 I do admit, the digital signs and automated announcements do make it a little bit better since they were put up in the 2000’s. No one ever liked hearing the loud and fast muffled voices of the conductors, but it might still happen if you go on one of the older trains of the 20th century. Thankfully, I don’t have to use public transportation as much as I used to.

It is because your system is run by capitalists while the MTA is run by soviets. The MTA won't get rid of patronage, won't punish bad behavior by employees nor reward good behavior. The police will not clear the vagrants from the system nor enforce fare collection. The fare is the same regardless of if you go 2 stops or 20 crossing a river and riding a bus it's the same $3. Went to Jersey City with my 9 year old she noticed how different the PATH was from the subway, it was much cleaner, there were no vagrants, no urine stench in the station, everyone was paying their fare. Not that it is perfect but the Port Authority runs the PATH much better than the MTA runs the subway. The sad thing is that the NYC subway system structurally has an excellent design and could be one of the best systems in the world if run properly.

Here in São Paulo, our subway is well maintained and the stations are clean, especially the yellow line 4 which is the most modern here in BRAZIL, it has driverless Korean trains, controlled remotely and with the CBTC system, this provides conditions for average intervals of 75 to 90 seconds to catch the train during peak hours. In addition to traveling to work or somewhere else, you can buy a coffee or a snack or buy some accessories for your cell phone all within the station, since many stations here focus on these small businesses, this generates jobs and additional revenue (space rental) for the station.
