- Dell PowerEdge R710 Server Memory "How To Guide" for proper RAM configuration and installation. Here you will find a good review on best practices for loading your memory modules and a helpful overview on all the different options including sizes, speeds and type of memory supported.
Let's get started! The Dell PowerEdge R710 has 18 DIMM slots. This is the next gen server following the 2950 and the R710 is the 2U older brother to the R610. Size options include 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB or 32GB DDR3 server memory. Speed options include 1066MHz, 1333MHz or 1600MHz. There are only two choices regarding type of memory supported. ECC Registered (RDIMMs) or ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMMs). The best option is very clear in our opinion. We always recommend ECC Registered over ECC Unbuffered. You will be able to scale to a higher capacity and the cost per GB is less expensive for ECC Reg over ECC Unbuffered. One question we hear a lot. Will Load Reduced (LRDIMM) Memory be supported by my Dell R710 server? Unfortunately, Load Reduced DIMMs are not accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R710 server. Max configuration is 384GB via (12 x 32GB) DDR3 1600MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. Which leads to another question we hear a lot. Why can't I put 18 x 32GB into my R710? Excellent question. We will solve this riddle in our video today!
The Dell PowerEdge R710 has two LGA1366 processor sockets running on Intel 5500 or 5600 series CPUs. Options are dual core, quad core or hex core. Each Intel processor controls 9 DIMM slots. There are three Memory Channels per CPU which means three DIMMs per memory channel. That is very key. This means the R710 is subject to the rank rule preventing users from loading up 3 Quad Ranks DIMMs per memory channel. You can only put 2 Quad Ranks DIMMs per channel and all 32GB DDR3 ECC Reg are Quad Rank.. thus running into the rank rule issue.
Dell does it again. Yet another high-performing 2U enterprise level server. In our video, we will outline a general overview of the memory specifications and provide tips on how to get the most out of your Dell PowerEdge R710 server. Just got ram from you guys. Thanks you. Great price, fast delivery!
Appreciate the business and positive feedback! Have a nice weekend.
Best ram description I have seen :) Thanks.
Appreciate the positive feedback!
Amazing explanation. Very professional
Tip: the 5600 series has 10 more pins on the socket than the e5 2400 v1/2
Thanks for the info
I love the R710 😍
Definitely a fan favorite over here too. 😁
@@cloudninjas recently bought one to go in my rack to host mail and Web servers for my business and my parents business. Was using a DIY E3-1220v2 with 32gb of RAM but 32gb is not enough for me no more
@@cloudninjas Would you really notice any difference if you populate 2 sticks per CPU? i mean i have 4x 32GB DIMMs to run the Hypervisor and its running over iSCSI.
@@VioletDragonsProjects with 4 DIMMs total... as long as they are all in different memory channels then you are in good shape.
@@cloudninjas Yeah they are all in the slots with the white tabs on.
Love those RAM sticks
We do too 😁
These servers are fading out, my first (well second) rendering was this, among a 385 g6 had 6core ddr2 like the r805. Still using it as a game hosting server. So many tears to spend.
Yes their heyday in the sun has set long ago. We still support components for them but don't build them anymore.
can you help i have a R710 how do i configure it with 4x16g and 8x 8g dimm"s
Great video. Great channel, actually. Are you Hawk from Cobra Kai?
First off thank you for the positive feedback. And yes, yes I am Hawk. 🤣
Hi,
Does it worth buying 710 in 2023 for home lab purposes ?
I'd recommend going with something newer. You can realistically get the R720 at the same price. And even the R730, which is based on DDR4, has come down. We are running specials right now on the R730 8 Bay SFF. Check out our deals of the week page - cloudninjas.com/collections/cloud-ninjas-deals-of-the-week
This may be a weird question, but what is the stick/plunger looking thing on the right side of the screen in this video for?
That is the mallet for our gong.
@@cloudninjas *blush* hah, I missed that when I was putting on my headphones. Thanks for the video.

This is when we go over which DIMM slots to install to MAX out. Thanks for commenting. Happy New Year!
Will the following RAM work on the r710: Kingston 32Gb 4Rx4 PC3L-12800L ECC REG Server Memory - SL32D3L16L11Q4? Where can I purchase the RAM trays you you're using in you video?
That will not work. That is load reduced. You need ECC Registered. I'll add a link to what you want in next comment.
Here is a link to all the Dell R710 memory options: cloudninjas.com/collections/poweredge-r710
I recommend going with the the 1333MT/s option as that is true fastest speed. Here is the kit you would want to max out your R710: cloudninjas.com/products/dell-384gb-12-x-32gb-ddr3-1333-mhz-pc3-10600r-ecc-registered-server-memory-upgrade-kit
Can you put LRdimm?
Negative. LRDIMMs are not compatible.
I am a total noob with this server stuff. So if we can only install 12 32g sticks can we put something smaller in the other slots or do they all have to be the same size?
Great question. Unfortunately not. 12 x 32GB is the max and would leave last slot of memory channel empty.
Are there out 4 sff bays sold separately (im thinking about making a 12 bay sff)...
I don't believe so...
For instance with R720 8 Bay LFF... you have to jump to R720xd to get 12 Bays...
muito bom
Thank you!
Great video, do you know what amount of tb is the max per bay and for all the server?
2TB drives are the largest drives supported by the Dell PowerEdge R710 server according to Dell. However, I have seen people use as high as 10TB SATA. Need latest FW and H700 controller. Good luck!
If you could make a voice on it would be great
@@yoosufdocrat1373 do you mean CC (closed captioning) so you can read the words?
Sorry only seen it know if you could make a video on it as i would like to install a 10tb in my poweredge r710 and why is it that i cant use a different raid card with higher speeds
I have more than one server laying around and want to use them all of them max out at a 12tb per server look for information on how to increase the capacity
