Koreans/other Asians seem to judge mainly on looks, while people from western countries are more concerned about whether or not someone is very talented. So I think the popularity of different idols in different countries actually means different things. I am sorry to say, but I don't think western people consider Hyoyeon more physically attractive than Yoona, they just appreciate her dancing skills more than Koreans seem to. Also there is a degree of pity, because we don't really have anything that is so cut throat in terms of looks, so we naturally want people to be able to shine for other reasons too. But think about it: Koreans often put down certain idols for not being pretty enough, and westerners often put down pretty idols for being "untalented" and just serving as a beautiful prop for the group.
