Great tutorial -I’ve had no problems up until joining the bias tape casing. If you twist the ends and then sew it across as demonstrated, how do you run the elastic through? It seems you have closed the casing at that point.
Hi Pam. I think you are referring to the step at 10:46? At that moment the tape on each side is facing each other. So in order to bring the front side of each bias tape you will have to twist the bias tape so that the front sides are facing each other. If done correctly, the elastic will be able to go through. @@TheSewingRoomChannel - I remember my mom making one of these for each of my sisters and me with three regular sized bath towels. One towel was folded in half lengthwise for the bodice and arms with a neck slit in the middle. A second towel was for the front attached to go down from the bodice front, and a third towel was used for the lower back. We wore them as bath robes in the winter and as a long beach cover up in the summer after swimming in cold Lake Michigan water. Perhaps an internet search would reveal a picture of one of these kind of robes as they were popular in the early 1960's. These were VERY quick and easy to make and comfortable to wear.
@@newbeequilter Am I understanding correctly, this robe pulls over the head? Or does the 2nd towel get cut up the middle?
@@@jojosewist8921 - Yes, as I remember, they pulled over the head. There may be variations of this with a zipper up the front, but my mom wanted to make some very quick Christmas gifts at the time using regular size bath towels she’d found on clearance sale earlier that year, and these fit the bill. I found them comfortable to wear once I got one it, BUT they were difficult to initially put on and then to take off. I did find one on Etsy that looked like the one I was talking about, McCall’s #8506 (1960s Women’s Robe or Caftan in 2 Lengths Beach Cover Up Empire Waist, size 14 bust 34) but it may have been bought by now. You might also check eBay as there were a few there too when I checked after first watching this video. But I must say, Sherill’s beach towel coverup looks quite easy to make, and I’d just buy two beach towels or yardage if I wanted to make it longer. I'd use the first beach towel to make it just as she did, and then with the 2nd beach towel, I'd split it in half and add 1/2 to the front and 1/2 to the back to make it longer.

Any tips on how to make this for a 15 month old? Do I just make it smaller? I’m not much of a sewer 😂
Hi Katie. Yes you would make it much smaller. For the width - measure from the center of the body to just below the elbow - then double that measurement - that is how wide your towel needs to be. For the length measure from the neck down the front of the body to the knee. Stay safe, and happy sewing.
