It's been a while since I watched big wave surf videos. I recently found out people aren't Towing into these big waves anymore. That's crazy. Much respect to these riders
To win the women's contest you pretty much just have to make it to the bottom of one wave. Just making an observation, and yes, I'll admit they have bigger balls than me for paddling into those things.
We agree. But that will change. The thing is women were only "allowed" to start competing in big wave events in the last few years. But they'll dramatically improve their performances in the next couple of years. In the shortboard division, they're already at the same level as men. 😉
@@surfertoday ahh come on...they're not at the same level as men in the shortboard. Why don't they surf teahupoo or pipe ?...It's not sexist it's just reality...It's ok...same in soccer, basketball, tennis, boxing, running...with all due respect
@@nickbrennan3389 Sure. It's not exactly the same. But the gap is much less pronounced. They already land airs, get barreled, carve hard, and could very well take on Pipe and Teahupoo. They're only waiting for an opportunity. Have you seen Maya Gabeira at Nazaré?
@@surfertoday there was a women's CT event at teahupoo back in the early 2000s..won by the legendary layne beachly.....maya very nearly died at Nazare ...but she went back a few years later I think and caught a few. Big wave surfing is no joke. Its for a very very small minority of people. I have the utmost respect for anyone who paddles out into big and heavy waves. It's not for me...or most surfers ( men and women )....👍
@@nickbrennan3389 You're right. But there are many women taking on Nazaré alongside men, and surfing in the same conditions. For example, Justine Dupont may have set a new world record. The problem is that the majority of media outlets tend to omit women's achievements. Fortunately, things are changing. No one wants men and women to be the same. We all have different skills, physical characteristics, etc. But we all need to have the same opportunities. PS: This comment was written by a man. 😉
Watching each one by one it appears the point is to get ahead of the white surf (while saying on your board!) I'm wondering if the men's body weight (and perhaps heavier boards) didn't help them drop faster, which then allowed most of them to veer off to the right away from the crashing wave. The women tended to go straight down and try and beat the white surf chasing them, but it was too fast. Anyway, kudos to them all. You wouldn't catch me there!!
@@surfertoday I haven't got a clue - am neither a surfer nor a mathematician! But I did grow up in a surfing town. I wish I had learnt to surf bc I love water and the ocean and surfing, but in 'those' days women did not surf. We would sit on the beach while the men surfed. Crazy. So glad times have changed.
Can have something to do with it. Yes you want to stay away from the actual breaking part of the wave. If youre in that it flips you. It is about speed. You paddle hard so as the wave comes, youre moving down hill gaining speed and you need to match the speed of the wave. The men are stronger and can paddle harder. Faster moving waves are harder to paddle into, which is why jet skis are used in the biggest conditions and why you see such large boards here. Large boards gain speed much more quickly
SurferToday still man I don’t understand it, I visited my friend in Maui in August and we went to big beach, the waves were only 10-12 feet and I came very very close to drowning I just had to keep swimming under them and if there was one more wave in that set I was gonna give up and die I had no more energy
We’re visiting Maui from 1/14-1/20. Anyone with a tour boat available to take us out near the Jaws waves - and of course away from danger? I checked with Jaws Tours and they take you to the cliffs
Jaws has changed so much over the years. It used to just be big wall of water with double breaks and only idiots surfed it. Earning its name as Jaws. Kinda disappointing.
I assume the board acts as a floaty of sorts, along with their flotation vests, to help the surfers reach the top again after they've gone through the washing machine

Thank you for no music, only natural sounds captured. Excellent footage made so much more enjoyable as a result.

Paddling into those waves takes real courage. Amazing footage

Paddling into huge giant waves is definitely a challenging game, even though some waves require motor power. 😉
Towing in and paddling into big waves are both alive and well.
Congrats Billy and all who competed out there. Much Respect!
Gorgeous waves and awesome surfing, cool stuff. Love the rainbows the wave spray makes. Hawaii no ka oi
Russ is so low key. Love that reaction when he comes out of the tube...super stoked. Way to go Russ!
Truly Gnarly, great footage, thank you! These surfers are in another class of wave riders.
Thank-you for A. No music B. No insane annoying slo-mo on every shot.
Thank you, Trent. 😉
Thank you for the video, those were some amazing barrels.
Hats off to the ski dudes. Without you I see some drownings.
Fantastic footage!

This is hard to watch simply for the sheer terror of those waves
That's gotta look like a football field of water coming at you, I couldn't imagine.
It gives a new meaning to the expression “heavy water.” 😉

Where's the, that-- TV tube data? It isn't on here? And that, helicopter-- is HAW owned, not yours.

Hi my new friend🙋 great video👌👏👍 let s support each other
Be safer without the leggie and use a jet ski to retrieve the board. Bailing out of the lip go from a pin drop to splits and sideways.
