    Thank you Ella, as for me I found majoring in English Literature really helped me with building my critical thinking and time management which made my career life very easy. We almost study about a lot of things like history, philosophy, arts and cultures. I would like to reconsider to study it if I rethink to choose my major because it is challenging and everyday you learn something new. 👍🏼

    I’m a highschool student struggling on what to do with my future. Since middle school I’ve enjoyed my English class I lowkey don’t enjoy reading but have learned that after reading through the books and taking the information in I instantly fall in love. I don’t know what it is. I just feel so empowered and full of knowledge it’s great Bc I am able to understand and intemperate what the writer is saying. I ask myself what I want to do with my life everyday. And what career I can do that be something I GENUINELY ENJOY, and something that’ll help me maintain my dream adult hood. And weather or not to try a 4 year? Or community. This is tuff stuff. I’m thinking about English lit now. This video is really helpful thank you. Lol I’m make sure to come back to this if I ever decide. :’) wish me luck

    I study in France and did a part of my undergrad in Ireland. It helped so much to read critically and to build writings well in any subject. So many opportunities as well you can go in a master to teach to foreigners and just travel all around the world and be well off. Of course you'll never be super rich but well off is grand like.

    I'm not a native English speaker. I decided to do an English degree SOLELY because I always liked to read. For fun. For everyone reading the comment, don't do this, ever, unless you like/are able to analise what you read. Another mistake I made was that before college I never read a book in English. For non-natives, it's a no-no. Read in English and prepare for the degree.

Although I tried a lot to get in any other thing literally anything but not this one cause I literally hated it and I prayed for guidance i was literally crying while praying to Allah(god) then I decided to stay in it and i met such an amazing people and i loved the major i’m now in my fourth year and I decided to do masters after my graduation. I have English course requirements where I'm with literature/writing majors and other English SCED (short for secondary education) majors, but I also am in classes where there are only other education majors (from early childhood to secondary like me).

      i have the same fears, i just graduated high school and thats all ive been thinking about lately, especially seeing my friends going into majors like compsci and medicine. but at the same time there is a vast pool of opportunities with this major, from the business world to publishing even the medicine world if you decide to widen your learning horizon. i know for a fact that the skills we will acquire with this major are going to be very valuable in life. this is what i remind myself when doubts and hesitation creeps in, and at the end of the day you can always switch majors if it doesnt work out. we as humans shouldn’t be put into one box, there’s so much to learn. ik its been a while since your comment but id love to hear your perspective now a year has passed

My current major is creative writing but I’m thinking about changing it to literature out of fear of less job opportunities. How did you end up finding out ways to quote?

    • @ShikariHybryd
      @ShikariHybryd 2 года назад

      @@em-bj4rm not sure if this is any reassurance but a degree (any degree in general) is required for most forms of teaching, along with a TEFL certificate which is pretty easy to get. Therefore, if you're worried about employment, there's always the option of travelling abroad and teaching. An English degree would definitely look great to employers who are looking for teachers. Even if teaching isn't really your thing, an English degree is often renowned to be quite challenging and would make your CV much more appealing to future employers. Hope this helps!

I’m studying English lit a level at the moment and find myself constantly working (whether it’s coursework or revision).. which I don’t mind too much because I enjoy it. But, I was wondering if the work load gets much more intense?💕

    • @EllaMayHoughton
      @EllaMayHoughton  4 года назад +7

      Yes I did! I actually wouldn't say the jump is that big, it doesn't get 'harder' per say it just gets more intense in terms of workload I guess🤷🏼‍♀️. There's a lot more to read and do, but the actual essay writing skill doesn't change too much in my opinion. In fact I'd say the essay writing side of things is easier because they're way less prescriptive at uni❤️❤️❤️

      If you really want to do it try taking some English courses before or try to improve by yourself so you don't find it too difficult to understand in classes.

    Did you know any non-native English-speakers at your university that were studying English? And how hard was it for them? Because I would love to study English lit and English is like one of my main/advanced courses for my highschool graduation (that I am working on right now) and I would say I am quite good at analyzing texts, both in English and in German (my native language). I also consume a lot of media and read books in English. So it would be nice to know if I even have a chance at competing with people who have spoken and known English their whole life :)

    Hi Ella Thank you very much for the video. I am looking for an English language textbook specifically about learning different types of writing (informative, descriptive, argumentative, discursive) with annotated examples from published articles. I would be really grateful if you could recommend me user-friendly guidebook/ textbook if you have come across it.

      ...thats not my point. I live in Britain so I guess its different but you can work in politics, journalism, become a teacher, take a law conversion degree. There are so many possibilities! And right now you are coming off a tad ignorant, there are over 6 billion people in our world who didnt all go down a STEM route and they are living just fine. Please, i genuinly want you to know this bc its such a bad mentality.
