You are so right ! But the big opera houses in the world are so afraid to put on stage a great ( the greatest !) artist who has Putin's portrait on his chest. It's only censorship and stupidity!
Her comment about his surpressed attitude when rehearsing, rings very true. One of the problems he had at the Royal Ballet, was that he was pressurised into repetitive rehearsing; he said he hated it, and just wanted to perform. Everything she says in this clip, bears that out. He is transformed when he is dancing live, and fresh, in a performance. I think he brings a whole new spontaneous level to his onstage performances, that sets him apart, and above, other dancers. It is a pity that the Royal Ballet put so much pressure on him when he was still so young; (I think it was down to the Artistic Director at that time; they simultaneously lost several other dancers) had they been more sensitive and in tune with their talent, maybe we would still be enjoying him here in the UK now. Happily, the dancers seem to be thriving and happy now under the current director.
Nice one Pam. A fascinating record of a partnership made in heaven. Also appreciated another dimension of Sergei revealed. A truly complex character. Heartfelt gratitude.
He is trained in the British technique! He was taught from the age of 10 at the White Lodge, followed by the senior school in Covent Garden. Then principal dancer at the Royal Ballet by age of 19. He has "Royal Ballet" written through him like a stick of rock! Even when he left, he returned for some time and lived in London.... but he expresses emotion in a truly wonderful Russian way. Same with Vadim Montagirov

I wish Zakharova and Polunin would do Giselle together again. Sometimes it seems to me that Polunin is afraid or hesitant to revisit his past. Big mistake - and a loss for all of us
He has danced classical ballets recently ...Coppelia a month ago in Munich, Romeo and Juliet in Verona in August, also Spartacus in August. And classical ballet underpins all his moves in his other ballets. I’m betting there will be more yet. He is only 30!
@@fionaerleigh Hello Fiona, I don't know about Coppelia but don't think Romeo and Julet was the classical version. I was in Verona and it was great but not the classical version; a condensed and adapted one by Johan Kobborg working with Sergei, the group being on their own, funds (or lack of) matter a lot. I also saw Rasputin in Zurich: very interesting but short and with few dancers... Same problem... And it's such a shame because Sergei is at his best in big demanding productions of classical ballets.
The Verona R&J was a new classical ballet by Johan Kobborg. That is no less valid as a classical ballet than versions by MacMillan, Cranko, Grigorovich, etc. I was there too. Rasputin is marketed as a dance drama. I agree it’s short, but Sergei is on stage for almost the entire performance and takes the majority of the dancing. I think he actually dances longer in Rasputin than in a traditional 3 act ballet which is padded out with intervals and corps de ballet numbers, pas de trois or other divertissements. I’ve seen it. Coppelia and Spartacus are full length traditional classical ballets - both performed in 2019. Fact. I’ve seen these too. Sacre is not a traditional classical ballet, but there are plenty of classical steps in it. Unusual to have a dancer perform for 35-40 minutes solo. I guess he is mostly dancing in his own ballets /shows lately. If you want to see him dance ..... get to one of his shows! You won’t come away unaffected.
I would imagine that the effect of being left in a foreign country (England) so young, not speaking the language and being thrown into the spotlight with too much pressure at 19, probably did not help his self confidence. And not seeing his family for years. Very hard on a child growing to adulthood. His level of hard work and talent was extraordinary; and that was recognised; but he must have felt overlooked and used, as a person. I think he has in the past, felt insecure.
Pam- where did you find this amazing video? It’s really interesting to compare Sergei’s chemistry with Osipova with his energy directed toward Zakharava. Can’t say which one I like best- both Wonderful!
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this video clip was recorded in 2013, not 2015. The rehearsal and performance parts were in Kiev in 2013 as well. Their partnership began way earlier than the cinema version was made. There’s another video posted here on RUclips, titled “the first joint in Giselle” at the Bolshoi in 2013.
Thank you for this lovely snippet, Pam. Sergei is truly in a category a part and it would be so special to see him in the classical full length roles again ...and I realize the likelihood of that is minimal :-( Do you know if the Cinema films are ever sold on DVD (appropriate to US use)..? Maybe I'm not looking in the right places.....?
Thanks so much, Love Music, for alerting me to the HDCollection site! I will be ordering this Giselle. I'm only sad that I couldn't find the full length versions of the snippets of Bayadere, Swan Lake, and Mayerling with Sergei that I've loved online :-( Please let me know if you come across any other sources to order from:-)

I have the impression RB is not respectful enough of the individuality and creativity of its dancers.
Sergei is one of the best in history. How did they let him down? He obviously needed support. What a shame for the Royal Ballet
