Have been watching you for a while .First time commenting .I think both of you are doing a great job. Especially since you were thrown in at the deep end .keep up the good work love the video
Joanna, you and Nick are very good at what you do, it is not an easy business farming; yet you have succeeded. Each time you have learned a little bit more about the process, you are someone who wears your heart on your sleeve. Which is what most of us love and admire about you, I think you will find as your progress in this experience and added confidence in your comfort in each sale; as you have stated each sale has a different beat. Adapt, go with the different each beat. Trust what you and Nick are doing, and take each sale as a gift for your hard work. ❤😅o
Breaks my heart to here how disappointed you are over the sale. You and Nick work so hard and the return is just not fair. I Hope and wish for you better days ahead. Cheers
Its just the ups and downs of sheep farming your lambs looked good and your presented them well what else can you do. Try not to worry so much life is to short
Excellent video again thanks for sharing unfortunate you are in the business that you can't set the price but have to take what someone else gives you don't be to hard on Nick lol take care my friend XX
Just watched your video, yea the market can be up and down,I remember your dad on market day, prices were poor, not what he really wanted, thinking it could be the market is slow due to Brexit. But he gave a slight smile a wink of his eye,and said we keep going, after all the hard work it seems disappointing, don’t feel to bad over it, hope next time it be better.
was another nice episode of dale farm. very in to see how those lambs are sold. you explain a lot well. i cant wait for a new dale farm episode. you are always up early every. enjoy your evening. 😘🤠🎃
Don’t be disappointed,109,104,94,those are good prices. You have to remember how awful the weather is for lamb buying also. Sheep hate wet, miserable weather....as do we 😊
Brilliant video once again Joanna and Nick, you got higher prices per lamb than what we’ve had here where I live .., love the sun rises, beautiful landscapes 💜🥰
Sorry you feel disappointed, would there be any solace in the fact that you presented more lambs than usual due to an outstanding birth rate/multiple lambs, with fairly low input apart from yours and Nicks heavy shepherding hours in the terrible weather. The middle man always wins it would appear. Ps thought your lambs looked well and were well presented. Your Dad would know and tell you did your best- then down to unpredictable market forces. Take care and not too much violence inflicted on Nick 😂😂xx
I sold some store lambs last Monday and I had £92 and was disappointed with the price compared to what I had a month ago. Prices are back a bit. It does make you feel down when you don't think you got enough, but as you say they are a lot better than they were 3 or 4 years ago. Colin
Your lambs looked good and presented them well what else can you do.not so long ago finished lambs weren't making that kind of money. Try not to worry so much life's to short.
I think because I had seen the prices were good and everyone saying it’s a good trade I expected it to be stronger !! But can’t complain at 100 I guess. I understand your disappointment! When you think what goes into raising the lambs …
Joanna u did a good job sellin them. No more u cud do. Maybe the nerves got to Nick. Dont be too hard on him. 😅 best of luck with the rest of the lambs. Lookin forward to seein more of the cows/calves. X
Lambs look well. You could do with some scales, I know they’re expensive but it takes the guesswork out of the job, you could maybe borrow some, you most likely had lambs that could have gone in the fat. I have a spare set you could try but I’m maybe too far away. Also I’ve found selling lambs directly into the abattoir has worked better for me this year, mainly because I’m not paying the market commission, and you know how much you’re getting before you take them. Don’t be disappointed, you’re doing great 👍
Is the 29th here and the temperatures have gone back up to 82 after the hurricane Helena came through and made a mess nice to see you're having cooler temperatures and not to worry about the prices you know what you know glad it all turned out well 💥✌️🇺🇸🇬🇧
Another cracking video Joanne. You and Nick work so hard and I think (from watching other RUclipsrs lamb prices) you did well at market. You said you’ve got 65 ewes left out of say 90. What are your thoughts moving forward? Increase stock? Keep some lambs or buy in? I only ask because I’m nosey (obviously you don’t have to answer). Some comments already have a lot of different views and ideas…lots of thinking time ahead for you all. Keep up the fabulous work-can’t wait for the next one (hopefully Nick will still be featuring in it lol 😂) xx
Joanna I think over the last few years the UK lamb prices have been really good so you did not get horrible prices, just what the market was prepared to pay on the day - here in NZ lambs are selling for around NZ$120 per head which is around 60 pounds - sheep farmers are doing it hard at the moment
i thought that was reasonable prices for them.........sam shutt farming have been selling a lot of lambs lately and they were selling quite a lot in the 90's .....some only made in the 70's which they were dissapointed with. i think to be honest as a seller we always hope for a bit more and the buyers always think they've paid too much. weren't you getting in the 80's for them last year i seem to remember or was the year before i can't remember. they were nice lambs anyway jo so don't be too dissapointed
Similar prices for me to last year! I think the prices have gone back a bit , they were nice lambs not the best lambs perhaps ! But I think mainly my feeling was I’d have liked a bit more , not a lot ! But a bit!
Considering the market is flooded with lambs atm the prices are good, and your thinking is right a month ago was prime time to sell store or food market lambs
@@DaleFarm it's all a gamble, if you watch the sheep game. Cammy sold some as store lambs one week then the sold them finished 1 or 2 weeks later and there was only a £10 difference in the price
Another interesting video. I know sheep are in your blood and how the memories of your dad make you even closer to them; however, at £100 each roughly, is now the time to look at the farm as a whole and ask yourself what further diversification you could do and whether sheep are the way forward? Just a thought from an outsider looking in. All the best
Sorry your lambs never sold better. You did a great job with them. Very uniform bunch. Lamb prices have dropped over here also. Hope the next sale is better. Take care
I would be inclined to sell more lambs , you are not far off winter and u will need the grass for the ewes ..........chance feeding on 40 or 50 lambs for a while but it might be well into the new year before lambs improve and its hard to fatten a lamb in wet cold weather in wet fields meal bills don't be long mounting up .........store lambs are a gamble , no 2 years the same
Don't start to rely on crap like Ibuprofen or paracetamol. Treat the problem not the symptoms. You tube has a lot of rubbish but is also an amazing place to learn about your body. I work on a farm too and often have a bad back. I never take any tablets for it. I just do the movements in this video ruclips.net/video/V6xVJbaQPcU/видео.htmlsi=J_VjzQc7lQXZWCs7 It really works! Usually doing this only once keeps me going for a good few weeks until I do something stupid again and hurt my back again lol.
I would not worry, the problem for farmers is that you are caught mainly being price takers not price setters. Sheep looked well and as you say a better price than a few years ago. Hope Nick is out of the dog house?
Thanks rob, Yeah you make a good point. It’s a tough industry no doubt. Yeah better prices than a few years ago. Nicks out the dog house but I was disappointed !x
Hi Joanna, Sorry your lambs prices did not meet your expecatations, but I suppose a sale is better than nothing at all. Bad backs are no fun at all. I've suffered from one on and off for years. I use a back brace and it does help me. I try not to overuse it though, and I also use Voltorol Gel, which I do find a big help...😃👍🏻
Jo, i envy you going to the market, here in East Anglia we only have one weekly livestock market in Colchester, none in Suffolk and an occassional one in Norwich. Some years ago there was a fantastic weekly market in Bury St Eds and it was the biggest live pig market in England selling over 2000 pigs per week, and you could at auction buy any thing from a bike to a bull, it was great but now it's shops, and I hate it, but that's "progress" not. That was a good video your stock all look well and it doesn't seem 5 minutes since you were lambing. Best wishes to you both from EA. Hi Jo, I hope you don't mind but I've replied to Jan's post on this site, thank you, Colin.
@@janw491 Hi Jan If you have pleasant memories of Suffolk hold on to them, it's still a nice place but greatly changed, there is lots of building going on mainly houses and the pace of life is much faster than you would remember. I note the Maple Leaf on your post, and I consider Canada a great country that has always been a good friend to the UK, thank you. Colin Mayes.
Hey Joanna! As you know I love seeing the landscape surrounding Dale Farm. Anyway, I am often told not to think because it's dangerous 😂, but I was anyway. If you went with a special feed mixture to increase the size of your lambs would it pay off at market? As everything is quite expensive today, would you recuperate that investment at sale, or is it more of a crap shoot based on how the sale is going that day?
What was the weight of the lambs? Doesn't sound that much different to the prices you got last year. Don't think you did too bad really. Although it's always nice to get a better price than the year before. Thanks for the video. Don't be too down hearted. All the best 🇬🇧.
I live on a farm not to far away, thought about doing the same but just doesn't seem worth the effort or emotional trauma for the what little profit there is, what sort of percentages are you pulling for profit?
Well that should be a chunk less work for you both now 🙂 I think anything round £110 is a good price, granted prices in the £90 is a bit disappointing but that’s the market game you play. Would it be worth taking a couple of days off on market day and going to watch what goes through? Get to talk with people and see if you can pick up what others are doing with flocks?🤷♂ X
Yeah , it’s all a balancing act , I do look at sale reports but I don’t know or talk to many farmer so I do feel quite isolated in that respect. Lacking a mentor. I don’t feel always that comfortable or confident in the market ! 🥲 I try and trust my instincts and learn as I go but it’s nice to have input from some one you trust , cos people all have opinions but some of them are talking shite !
@@DaleFarm I don’t come from a farm background (parents are townies) and I’d never baled anything until about 15yrs ago and never properly worked on machinery. I’ve chatted to the neighbours of the estate and local farmers. There all fairly happy to talk when I put my hands up and said I don’t know what I’m doing but I’m trying to learn which makes a difference. Even watching YT you get ideas off what could be done. Yeah lots of shit given out but sometime you need to go through that to knock it off the list! I know I’ve screwed up a fair bit of hay this year😭🤦♂️
Just an idea, but have you considered to add an additional flock of a more specialized higher value rare breed sheep to the farm to diversify your stock and increase the potential to achieve higher sales prices? Also do you offer a contracting grazing service to local famers to have your sheep graze their fields on a contracting basis to add extra income to your operation? Not only is it an extra income source, but it also allows your own fields time to recover with less grazing pressure then the sheep are offsite grazing on contract. If you just do the same thing over and over you will end up with a similar outcome more often than not.
Joanna, in the past I also have experienced less-than-ideal and very ordinary livestock sale prices on selling day and quite often there is no rhyme or reason for it being that way. You then attempt to console yourself by thinking "well, it could've been worse" or "other's got even less than yourself" etc. The thing is though, the financial cost of getting the livestock to saleable size always rises each year and on top of that you've still put in the same amount, or even more, of work and effort as in previous years to get them to the aforementioned size and condition for sale. This is why, like you I found ordinary prices on the day of sale disappointing and somewhat irritating. I guess it's the human reaction. Never doubt though Joanna that you're not doing a top job with your livestock because IMHO you are doing everything very well. I hope the next sale is better. Take care.
Hi Jeff, like you say , it’s a human reaction and if I didn’t have high expectations why would I even bother! I strive to do my best and I am optimistic for good outcomes and a lot of the time I hit disappointment, that’s life. Farming is tough huh! Tell you what, I do miss my dad so very much. I have been thinking about him a lot lately and at the market I could have burst into tears , it took everything to put on a brave face that day. X
Sorry haven watch for a while....work....my mom died...had to put dad in a nursing home and sell their house.....and busy with work...and fighting a bad back for some 3 years now and just today I had injections in one side...3 weeks then the other side...and I'm just getting time to check in....😁...the market lambs look really nice....well I always say things could be worse....I don't know how you figure how much you need to bring in to cover your cost and make a living but I sure everyone is in the same "boat"....
I have been disappointed with our prices the last 2 weeks. Someone has bought some bargains but as long as you have done your best thats all you can do. Your lambs looked well Jo. Keep up the good work
Think number that matters is the price per Kg . See how this compares with the Fat lamb price. Would only creep feed if it’s going to add value. Might be worth trying some at a fat market so you have the option 😊
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I don’t think my lambs would have been as big a month ago, as they were born April and lots of triplets and twins not the biggest lambs this year
65 is a good number of ewes to breed from .........you have a camp site to run also ............lesser amount of ewes. , means that they will fare out better over winter and less lambs will thrive better .......sometimes less is more ....! with less lambs about the place u could feed them meal after weaning and sell most of them direct to the factory .....fed lambs do well in the factory ......very little meal can fatten a lamb to factory weight in summer months compared to late autumn or winter ....! concentrate on what gives the best return for your time , campsite or sheep ..!
The campsite no doubt is where the money is going to be made, we have invested so much in it, I’m really proud of what we have built. Taking over the farm has taken a lot to fit in around the campsite responsibilities, although it makes me feel sad I think if anything needs to be reduced it’s the farming side because it costs me so much time and energy and the return is poor
So yes, less is more . I don’t think my sheep suffered at current levels running 90 ewes , I would do lambing differently -left the Tups out too long it became painful !!
@@DaleFarm cut back the numbers to 50 ewes or so .......cull extremely hard , and let the ram out for 5 weeks only ........when I was young I used to keep 250 ewes along with cattle .....now I only have 50 .......I miss the money kinda ......but I do not misss the work and stress ........cattle do better for me now as so much more grass for them to eat , and sheep are much stronger also as they are not hungry half the time ........ for the last few years store lamb finishers are doing better that those lambing ewes over here
It’s a tough one, not much of a margin for the lads buying them as is. £100 for a lamb .. you’ve got to be sort of winning?! Looks like they’ve had no creep either
Got to love Andy the Dry Stone Waller Thought you got good prices for the Lambs & Perhaps being Autumn could have sold a few more. Nick forgot to record but then loved the photos Andy took. I have such a tough life you brighten my day Joanna x

Thank you, not sure of the weight I would estimate around 40kg
Could you run cheviouts or texils
What was the weight of the lambs? Doesn't sound that much different to the prices you got last year. Don't think you did too bad really. Although it's always nice to get a better price than the year before. Thanks for the video. Don't be too down hearted. All the best 🇬🇧.
Thank you. Prices are similar to last year for us x
For the quality of the lambs I would say you got a really good price. I buy store lambs and I wouldn’t of paid you what you got for them. Well done
Okay!
I think the point i was making is that the prices seem to have receded a little which is disappointing
Those lamb prices are decent. Don't be too down about the trade
Thanks ☺️
Joanne, what weight were your lambs?
Best wishes from Ireland!
Around 40kg I reckon
Auctions are always a gamble, don’t be downhearted
Yeah you are right xx
Lovely video 😊😊xx
👌
I live on a farm not to far away, thought about doing the same but just doesn't seem worth the effort or emotional trauma for the what little profit there is, what sort of percentages are you pulling for profit?
It’s most definitely not worth it 😀
Well that should be a chunk less work for you both now 🙂 I think anything round £110 is a good price, granted prices in the £90 is a bit disappointing but that’s the market game you play. Would it be worth taking a couple of days off on market day and going to watch what goes through? Get to talk with people and see if you can pick up what others are doing with flocks?🤷♂ X
Yeah , it’s all a balancing act ,
I do look at sale reports but I don’t know or talk to many farmer so I do feel quite isolated in that respect.
I know I’ve screwed up a fair bit of hay this year😭🤦♂️
Hi Joanna. The lamb with the long tail named Angel, are you keeping her? Was she a bottle fed lamb.
Take care both of you. 😊😊
Hi Dulcie! Yes angel , bottle fed and very nearly didn’t make it so I’m super happy she is still with us ☺️ and will keep her
@@DaleFarm thanku for reply
Great video, you did an excellent job with the lambs and many thanks for the mention and will definitely do a video for you next time!😊
Thank you andy and Anna
Xx
This is why, like you I found ordinary prices on the day of sale
disappointing and somewhat irritating.
You certainly would be missing your Dad Joanna and I truly wish I could ease the sadness and pain that you feel.
You should feed a bit of meal and try finish them for the factory that’s what I do work out better that way
Yeah we are going to finish the rest on some creep xx
Do you still do your home baking
I cook all our meals, really enjoy cooking but not so much baking these days x
@@DaleFarmwould love to see some more cooking on this channel 😊
Sorry haven watch for a while....work....my mom died...had to put dad in a nursing home and sell their house.....and busy with work...and fighting a bad back for some 3 years now and just today I had injections in one side...3 weeks then the other side...and I'm just getting time to check in....😁...the market lambs look really nice....well I always say things could be worse....I don't know how you figure how much you need to bring in to cover your cost and make a living but I sure everyone is in the same "boat"....
Your looking so pretty girl xx and so beautiful ❤❤❤❤ in the land walking it to
Is Nick in the dog house
Love ❤your videos
Hehe 😝 a little bit but we live and learn, that’s life ( a disappointment! ) haha
Thanks for watching
I have been disappointed with our prices the last 2 weeks. Someone has bought some bargains but as long as you have done your best thats all you can do. Your lambs looked well Jo. Keep up the good work
Think number that matters is the price per Kg . See how this compares with the Fat lamb price. Would only creep feed if it’s going to add value. Might be worth trying some at a fat market so you have the option 😊
Yeah we have introduced some creep for the rest now! Thanks for your input
Sounds like the lambs sold well in the stores or maybe you kept them to long to sell xx
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I don’t think my lambs would have been as big a month ago, as they were born April and lots of triplets and twins not the biggest lambs this year
11:03 Rays of Light Farm🌞
Got 100 lambs left out now , which I’m giving creep to! Plan to sell end of October that’s what we usually do
@@DaleFarm cut back the numbers to 50 ewes or so .......cull extremely hard , and let the ram out for 5 weeks only ........when I was young I used to keep 250 ewes along with cattle .....now I only have 50 .......I miss the money kinda ......but I do not misss the work and stress ........cattle do better for me now as so much more grass for them to eat , and sheep are much stronger also as they are not hungry half the time ........
for the last few years store lamb finishers are doing better that those lambing ewes over here
It’s a tough one, not much of a margin for the lads buying them as is. £100 for a lamb .. you’ve got to be sort of winning?! Looks like they’ve had no creep either
Meal lamb take out the best and put on hopper meal
Very bad time of year selling store lambs it's very same here I'm Ireland if u could sell them July is the month to sell
Mine would be tiny!
Your prices were pretty good should be happy with were sellling fat lambs mid £120
Got to love Andy the Dry Stone Waller Thought you got good prices for the Lambs & Perhaps being Autumn could have sold a few more. Nick forgot to record but then loved the photos Andy took. I have such a tough life you brighten my day Joanna x
Sorry it’s so difficult for you David. Thank you for watching xxx
Hi David, I love repairing the walls and being around the animals. Thanks for the compliments but Anna took two of the photos. Hope things improve for you
Don’t we all on sale day
Yep!
Just tell the buyers can watch how they are raised on your channel and explain how great lamb chops are for breakfast 😂😂🚜
😊😊😊
Any way/ chance you could direct market them and cut out the middleman?
Yeah that is an option x
You should not leave lambs in the shed the night before the sales.Because your lambs Will way 2or3 k less. And you will receive less money.
They sounded decent money to me , there needs to be something left for the next man !
👍👍 when I look at my costs I need to recoup as much as possible, considering what Iv spent on feed buckets and tubs, ewe corn, vets bills , and that little
Thing called my time 🕰️
Blue tongue not helping at the moment!!
Definitely not
Fat lambs are only just above £3 a kilo. I would of said you had good trade.
Thanks for your thoughts!
farming like gambling some time u win some tims it loss
