I bought my K1000 new in 1984 and paid $110 for the body and $50 for the 50mm lens. My best purchase EVER, I still use the camera today and always will as long as there is film. Talked to a lot of pros and they agree it's a great camera that they also still use. This may be the best camera to start with but it's also a great camera to use forever. I found that after a few years I didn't even have to think about the settings, it becomes second nature. May take a moment or two longer to take a photo over an automatic camera but the results will always be a beautiful picture.
Hey, just wanted to say I really enjoyed this video. I've just started shooting film, starting with my dad's old A-1, but now that I've got the bug, I'm thrifting for new classic SLRs. I just picked up the K1000 plus 50mm f2 lens for $10, which is a hell of a steal when checking Ebay. After watching this video, I'm really excited to get out there and shoot with it. There was a lot of good information here, and it's encouraging to know this camera can be a very functional workhorse.
jagerardi I think I read it was the other way around? The first couple thousand had the brown leather before switching back to the black leather to match the non SE models. I find it a lot harder to find the brown SE, I always come across the black SE’s.
The case could be made that the internals of the K1000 are basically the same as the original Spotmatic from 1964... so, a thirty-three year run! All they really changed was the lens mount and added a hot shoe.
Later Spotmatics did have a hot shoe. It is not a _case_ that the K1000 was a Spotmatic with a K-mount, it was a fact. But it did come via the KM : the KM was first and the K1000 was a cut-down KM. I'm not sure if a 1964 design is meant to be a good thing. The meter was slow and had a poor dynamic range compared with later types.
The automatic setting on a particular lens will not function on a K1000. This setting is for camera bodies with program functionality such as the Pentax P30n, P50 etc..
$50? Someone must have got the memo about a film revival because average prices on ebay are now 80 bucks once shipping is included. It is a lovely camera but be wary of overinflated prices for good condition examples. As I said in another video, better to buy a working but slightly more worn example.
80 bucks??!!! Kidding? I've just looked at EBay UK (22 Feb 2020) and the _cheapest_ Buy-it-Now price working one is £90 ($115). The dearest is £325. Typically £120-£150. There is a _broken_ one for £145! Speculators are in the market, buying to re-sell at a higher price, and so the prices rise until some mug buys one for actual use. Plenty of equivalent cameras to buy for far less.
Hey bud great video but let me tell you about your expired film if you haven't already figured it out by now. One full stop for every decade. Does that make sense?
@14:55 you got a _SE_ and two lenses for $55?? I would have expected _$550_ ! The seller didn't have had a clue what he was selling! Even the prices of plain K1000s are bonkers these days. @11:35 _"plasticky, even Canons"_ LoL, Canon make some good cameras but also some designed for cheapness. The Rebels are entry level ILC cameras. BTW, the Pentax LX and Nikon F3 were also produced for 21 years.

I had a Pentax K1000. Perfect beginner camera-everything manual, not much you can’t do.

My first camera as a teenager in the 80s love this camera
Just as an FYI, the first couple thousand of the K1000 SE were released with a black leatherette before they switched to brown.
