i have been a rilke stan since i was 13 and he’s by far my favorite poet of all time, to the point where i got a tattoo similar to this >> on my 18th birthday this year to symbolize his quote, “the purpose of life is to be defeated by greater and greater things,” on the outside of my wrist. his work makes me feel alive, makes me feel whole, and makes me feel safe. in my eyes, nobody else compares to him and his way with words and expression. we also share the same middle name 😉

The other day I began to read 'The Picture Of Dorian Grey' and I had tears in my ears in the beginning pages itself not only because I felt everything that was going on in me was expressed so beautifully but also that someone else felt the same way. I was having a not so great day and felt alone. The moment you began narrating Rilke's letters, I felt seen again and comforted just like when I was reading Oscar Wilde's book. I keep thinking, look at these people (Leonardo Da Vinci, Shakespeare and more). We have a distance of centuries between us yet they feel the closest in terms of emotional companions. P. S. I have a good mind to start reading Rilke's work soon Emma. I was already a fan since you narrated the snippet that's on one of your coffee mugs.

I love Rilke, and I'm beyond excited to find others who share the same passion for him! I was introduced to Rilke through a Japanese novel called The Wind Has Risen (Studio Ghibli's "The Wind Rises" is loosely based on this novel) by Tatsuo Hori, in which the protagonist reads Rilke's "Requiem for a Friend" in the last chapter. Reading that novel in my teen years, I was deeply moved by Rilke's words quoted in it. I've been repeatedly reading his poems, Letters to a Young Poet, as well as Stories of God ever since, especially when I feel alone. Rilke has taught me many things, and among them, I am especially grateful for his teaching me that solitude doesn't have to be a bad thing. Being a musician (Pianist and composer), I spend much of my time alone, and it is easy to feel lonely, but Rilke has taught me that the one who decides whether aloneness would be hopeless loneliness or blessed solitude is myself. Rilke, to me, has become the "innocent mind,/ Whose words are images of thoughts refin'd," as Keats would say:)
I read Letters to a Young Poet very recently, and it was life-changing. It was as if as I was reading, Rilke was responding to all the questions going through my head. If once sentence said something and I was thinking "but what..." the next sentence would be "of course you could say..., but..." it was almost as if I was Kappus haha. Overall, I think the single thing this book taught me is that it's ok to do what you love in solitude, and not have a whole community based on that thing that are only going to offer criticism and competition. And that only having questions, not answers, is ok. I'm so glad you made this video! 🤍

This video is beautiful! I totally agree with everyone saying this is like a BBC documentary! I didn't enjoy Letters to a Young poet as much as most people do, but some of his sentiments are really moving and his language is especially beautiful. I love the idea of turning inward, not letting your creations be deemed as worthy by others. But his stance on solitude and on love seemed idealistic. Solitude and time in nature is a privilege at times, although I wish it weren't. Obviously I wasn't the target audience of these letters, so my qualms are all personal. I wish it were possible to read Kappus' letters, because I think I would have enjoyed the work more if I were able to take on the point of view of the intended recipient better. This work did convince me to read more Rilke, though!

It isn't from "Letters..." but something that I came across in an anthology of his writings has stayed with me ever since as a hauntingly lucid articulation of a feeling that most of us probably have at one time or another in life. I might be mashing together multiple quotes but what I have etched into my quote storehouse goes -- "The longer I live, the more urgent it seems to me to endure and transcribe the whole dictation of existence up to its end; for it might just be the case that only the very last sentence contains that small and possibly inconspicuous word through which everything we had struggled to learn and everything we had failed to understand will be transformed suddenly into magnificent sense. And who can be sure if in the realm of the beyond it might not somehow matter that here we had reached precisely that end that was ultimately meant for us? There is no certainty that new challenges might not confront us on the other side even if we were to willfully flee from here completely exhausted-challenges that the soul, finding itself shaken, and without having been either summoned or prepared, would face with an inescapable and tormenting sense of shame.”

I'm in full agreement with the other commenters. You do a wonderful job with this presentation. I see I'm going to need to revisit Rilke (once again). He is indeed the poet of solitude. Lately I've been trying to become the opposite: a poet of the We. But an effective We requires the creation of a *courtesy* to an almost Confucian level. This will in turn require exactly what Rilke thinks through: a courtesy which provides "the mutual guarding, bordering and saluting of two solitudes."

I've been getting more into meditation and mindfulness, and I couldn't help but link that to how much Rilke emphasises on solitude and being present.
Letter six reminds me strangely of this poem, this business of going inward: Romanesque Arches by Tomas Tranströmer, translated by Robert Bly Tourists have crowded into the half-dark of the enormous Romanesque church. Vault opening behind vault and no perspective. A few candle flames flickered. An angel whose face I couldn't see embraced me and his whisper went all through my body: Don't be ashamed to be a human being-be proud! Inside you one vault after another opens endlessly. You'll never be complete, and that's as it should be. Tears blinded me as we were herded out into the fiercely sunlit piazza, together with Mr and Mrs Jones, Herr Tanaka and Signora Sabatini- within each of them vault after vault opened endlessly.
It is a little sad that the young poet's name is not well known. I read these letters along with the ones written to Marina Tsvetaeva a couple of years ago but I appreciate them better through your words. Thanks, Emmie!

I am late to this video but I absolutely adore it. Honestly, completely obsessed with it. Halfway through this video I ordered a copy for myself as well as a friend at work. My friend has been struggling with self esteem, confidence, work, her creativity (she loves to write poetry), family, and love for herself as well as relationships. I've been trying to at least 1-2 times a week leave her an uplifting note, affirmation card, small gift in random places in her office to bring her some positivity, love, and encouragement. I think this book might be a great way to give her a boost of inspiration, as well as, recognition of a kindred spirit in Rilke. Thank you so much for this video Emma. I hope to see many more like it.

I read it earlier this year when my dog passed away and it was just what I needed at the moment. it made me see death from a different perspective. it also made me understand it and accept it as what it is, just another chapter of life.
I’ve been reading Letters to a Young Poet for the first time. When I saw you released this video this morning, I got up and finished it, then immediately watched this. I think maybe I’m too close to it at the moment to say cohesively what some of these letters meant to me reading them for the first time. So I can’t tell you how much I loved hearing you speak about them with so much love and reverence. Letter Eight was also my favorite, followed closely by Seven. I am late to this video but I absolutely adore it. Honestly, completely obsessed with it. Halfway through this video I ordered a copy for myself as well as a friend at work. My friend has been struggling with self esteem, confidence, work, her creativity (she loves to write poetry), family, and love for herself as well as relationships. I've been trying to at least 1-2 times a week leave her an uplifting note, affirmation card, small gift in random places in her office to bring her some positivity, love, and encouragement. I think this book might be a great way to give her a boost of inspiration, as well as, recognition of a kindred spirit in Rilke. Thank you so much for this video Emma. I hope to see many more like it.
i recently reread rilke because the letters were given to me as a gift from one of my dearest friends and mentors. this video just made it all more meaningful

I was looking in a bookstore for a copy recently and found Rilke's Book of Hours. Will continue my search but have greatly enjoyed reading his poems.

the only rilke I've ever read (sad, I know) is the dark interval. I read it earlier this year when my dog passed away and it was just what I needed at the moment. it made me see death from a different perspective. it also made me understand it and accept it as what it is, just another chapter of life.
I’ve been reading Letters to a Young Poet for the first time. When I saw you released this video this morning, I got up and finished it, then immediately watched this. I think maybe I’m too close to it at the moment to say cohesively what some of these letters meant to me reading them for the first time. So I can’t tell you how much I loved hearing you speak about them with so much love and reverence. Letter Eight was also my favorite, followed closely by Seven. I might have never even heard of Rilke or been encouraged to read his words if not for your channel. Thank you.
