Home Free always seems to find the perfect balance in covers to keep it similar enough to the original that it's not jarring, but different enough that it doesn't feel like a copy.
One of the things I admire about Home Free is the respect they show to the songs/artists they cover while adding that Home Free touch. Don McLean contacted Home free to re-record his timeless classic "American Pie" with him for the 50th anniversary of his song. Hope you check it out sometime. Don did it his way this time around and it's marvelous! Yes, "Hurt" with Johnny Cash, it breaks my heart.
This song helped Home Free win the Sing Off. Tim went even lower in the competition. If AJ loves Johnny Cash, he might hate the magic this group applied to Folsom Prison Blues during Covid lockdown.
Their stage shows always include a solo spot of Adam Rupp doing his percussion and sound effects. It's often the only time he speaks in the whole show. The other guys go backstage for a little break. 😏
There is so much to these incredibly talented men. I would encourage you to listen to Take Me Home Country Roads. They all have solo parts and its an arrangement like you've never heard before. Its the best version you'll ever hear and an incredible tribute to John Denver.
Adam actually put a reggae beat to it. I wasn't a fan at first either, but it grew on me knowing that Johnny Cash would have probably liked it himself.
As mentioned, this was sung by Home Free during The Sing-Off. IMO, the groups that competed had to make their songs "unique" to be noticed and remembered by the judges. And boy, were they noticed! And that long, last note (G1) was all Tim Foust; he hit F#1 in The Sing-Off version.
Adam Rupp doesn't just do drums, he does all sorts of sounds from very real harmonicas to racking a shotgun. Somewhere there's a clip of him "taking Tim for a car ride". they're sitting in lawn chairs and tires are screeching and they even back into a trashcan. Tim says he won't ever ride with Adam again! LOL You'll think very well of Austin Brown if you hear them do "When A Man Loves a Woman". Austin is in your face for the lead but the whole group is marvelous.
This is an arrangement that they did for the Sing Off. They were sort of challenged to have a soft/romantic spin on it, which lead to the beginning section, then they switched it up to the reggae beat. They were afraid people would be pissed that they did the reggae stuff to "Johnny Cash", but the judges and the audience loved it. they saw an opportunity to collab with Avi, and here it is. You are right, You can appreciate the talent and still not like the song. It doesn't necessarily reflect on the group. I hate Born in the USA, I have hated it since it first came out, but I have to admit Home Free did a great job on it - I just prefer to not listen to it.
They do covers, but also have some amazing originals. My favorite is "Dreamer" because it doesn't sound as deeply country to me, (never been a fan of country, but I like these guys) and Rob leads it also. They have done some amazing collaborations also. The Oak Ridge Boys, Kenny Rogers (before he passed), Don McClean, Lee Greenwood, Alabama, etc. Please check out more.
This is the song they sang when they were on The Sing Off and people say it was what set the win for them. For something completely different than anything you heard from Home Free released an original written by Chance Skull and Bones it’s for the video game Skull And Bones Ubisoft is releasing soon. They have a Lyric video and they sang a shorter version at Ubisoft Live Premiere. It’s beyond Epic
I love Home Free and this song. That said, someone can not be a fan and still recognize the talent of the voices and the arrangement. AJ anyone coming for you in the comments is being silly, 1: you said it grew on you, 2: you were completely valid in your opinion and stayed respectful to the talent and work that went into the whole production.
Ring of Fire in a more modern, somewhat reggea-like version, but still respecting the original. More than 4 years ago this was the first video I saw/heard from Home Free. I got there because I was listening to Pentatonix at the time and Avi was my favorite. Immediately there was something that drew me to Home Free. From then on I followed them and after I think 2 videos I was a real Home Fry. I hardly follow PTX anymore. Avi still does, because Avi Kaplan and Home Free let me feel music and not just hear it. Their great harmonies, the unbelievably good beatboxing/vocal percussion and of course that incredible deep bass that makes the ground vibrate and your speakers explode. Personally, I thought Avi fit better with Home Free than with PTX. But that's my opinion 😊
Seeing AJ's background, you guys need to listen to Home Free's pirate/sea genre songs. They do a Sea Shanty Medley and they have an original called Skull and Bones that Adam Chance wrote for a new video game. Both are top shelf as is to be expected with anything from Home Free. Also, there was a reference to Patsy Cline in the Man of Constant Sorrow video. HF did a cover of CRAZY and it's beautiful!!
Avi Kaplan left Pentatonix about 6 years ago. Best thing he ever did. A classically/operatically trained vocalist, he is also a great songwriter. His genera leans mor to Americana Folk, Countryish and some Western sounds. Pentatonix would not even allow him to release any of his own solo work for 3 years after he left. His first release under his name Avi Kaplan was a song titled Change On The Rise. It is a very masculine song.
Tim Foust (bass) has a 5+ octave range and has - at least twice - blown out speakers during live performances (audience members have posted them on y/t - thery're funny as hell). Three of them are song writers so there are lots of originals as well as covers. Apart from Covid, they tour 150-200 shows a year, so there are lots of live vides as well.
Home Free was asked to make the song a bit different on the NBC show the Sing Off (which they won in 2013). So they made a reggae style version which I think is cool. Avi has a beautiful tone to his voice but it was Tim (who has a 5 octave range) who did the last note. On the Sing Off, he went even lower on this song. They also do a bit of a jazzy/bluesy style of Folsom Prison Blues, another Johnny Cash song. You should watch Adam Rupp Drum Solo (2015). It’s just him and the microphone. Amazing. Try Brothers in Arms, Helplessly Hoping, In the Blood, Skull & Bones (an original for a pirate game of the same name).🤩😃
When you get to a concert/party with Home Free, don't sit front left or right. That's where the sub-woofers are and you'll be physically vibrating when Tim goes low. Remember how The Who used to bust guitars? Tim likes to bust speakers...but with his subharmonic notes.
Hi guys! Love your reactions! This is the Adam Rupp drum solo that came out in 2015. It's the one to start out with, Home Free: Drum Solo [SPM ST15]. It's longer than 3 minutes though. Have a great day. You won't be disappointed.
Enjoyed your reaction! Hurt is a great song...but Chance from HF and the Hound and the Fox also released a video for it...I think all 4 of you will enjoy it!
His drum solos are almost all about ten minutes...there are several of them. Adam put sort of a reggae spin on the beatboxing. They also do Folsom Prison Blues (during quarantine). Did you know they have a video Two Country Singers Try Singing Opera. Avi left PTX in 2021 I think and he has a channel that is great, too. Tim has a five plus octave range and you might have noticed he sustained that low note to the very end. Avi changed his beret to a cowboy hat.
Not a Johnny Cash fan, but they did a great job on this. If you're really interested in seeing one of Adam's drum solos, here is a link to one of my favorites: ruclips.net/video/pZz6uhEzSSY/видео.html Enjoy.
love it I know said few songs on your VoicePlay reaction this drop Today/ Tonight Creep - Radiohead (acapella) VoicePlay ft. Anthony Gargiula just letting you guys know
Thanks for a great reaction, guys. I do have to correct you on one small detail. That last note from Tim was not a sub harmonic. Tim doesn’t really do sub harmonics, it’s a growl note.
That’s incorrect. Adam has never competed in any sort of beatbox competition. He has however been voted best beatboxer by his peers at a couple of a cappella festivals
@@justann1358 OH! Okay, thank you for the correction! I could have sworn I saw a thing that said World Champion... Well, I already know my memory is CRAP but now it seems my brain is also playing tricks on me... :P
@@jamescurfman3284 you probably did see that somewhere, because there seems to quite a lot of people spreading the misinformation (I’m guessing not out of ill will, but, like you, because they read it somewhere and believed it) however, Adam has addressed this and confirmed that it is only rumours. So, not your mind playing tricks on you 😁
Not pop...Reggae beat.😂but just so you know,Geoff Castellucci,Tin Foust,& Avi Kaplan all have PHENOMENAL RANGES & all 3 get along well and admire & respect each other. The beat,as mentioned by others, was for the Sing Off competition on tv. Nice job reacting, I can understand not feeling this version at first,I grew up listening to the OG JOHNNY CASH version with my dad who is an OLD country fan...he also wasn't too sure about this version at first...it grows on you once you understand how difficult it is to take a cover and manipulate it to be your own style while keeping it true to the original artist...its not an easy task. They really are creative with their versions and know what part should be sung by whom in order to make all the parts, instruments, and voices harmonize and compliment each other in a whole group.taking music written for and with instruments then altering the music to fit a group of 5 (or 6 with a guest singer) voices ONLY is not easy, they do a wonderful job in my opinion.oh and you can just say Pentatonix I think,I've been a Pentaholic since they first were on the Sing Off,and I'm pretty sure you can just call them PTX,or Pentatonix without the" The" in front,lol...😂🎶✌
Excellent reaction, I hope that at some point (even without a reaction) yall will listen to Home Free's Ring of Fire from the sing off show, it was really wonderful' it may have been even better than this one.
Bald headed bearded guy didn't like it because it wasn't a copy of the original. This is a cover that way the original still stands out with it's unique sound. The respected the song enough to leave it alone and do a different sound with the great lyrics of the original. None of these guys seemed to get the sound was a reggae beat.
I never liked Johnny Cash as a child & young teenager. Mostly I didn't appreciate his drugs and life style. I love Home Free's version best. I love Austin Browns high tenor voice. O Holy Night by Home is Beautiful also. Tim wrote "Snow Bird" it's good but in another direction. I appreciate each of your opinions. I have followed HF since before the Sing Off 2013.
This is a great video but I still prefer the version our HF fellas sang for their third performance on the 4th season of The Sing Off. It just showcases their strengths even better than this one--in my humble opinion. ❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️ (This one does indeed feature Avi Kaplan--another exceptional bass--who has been mentored in bass excellence by Home Free's Tim Foust (as has VoicePlay's Geoff Castellucci).
Great reaction to Home Free, hey guys you be you. We dont watch you for a cookie cutter response. I love this group, but they have songs I'm like meh. I do like hurt by Johnny, but its tough to watch 😢
Johnny Cash's Hurt is an amazing performance, well worth your time.
We agree! You should check our reaction to it! We loved it!
Home Free always seems to find the perfect balance in covers to keep it similar enough to the original that it's not jarring, but different enough that it doesn't feel like a copy.
For AJ and his ship: HF’s Sea Shanty Medley and Scull and Bones
I love the way Avi takes his hat off to Tim for that final low note.
Avi changes hats at the end.
Mad respect between Avi & Tim...they both have incredible ranges and they enjoy working together!!😄🎶🔥✌

Yes, the basses and the beatboxer 🔥🔥🔥 the drum solo is more like 7to 8 minutes. I hope you react to it
You NEED to watch Adam's drum solo! I prefer the 2015 version first, then any of his later ones after that to show his awesome progression!
It was more of a Reggae beat. If you are a fan of Johnny Cash, they also did Folsom Prison Blues.
It's awesome!!!! ❤
Their stage shows always include a solo spot of Adam Rupp doing his percussion and sound effects. It's often the only time he speaks in the whole show. The other guys go backstage for a little break. 😏
I like the reggae beat they used. “ Take me home country roads” is a good rendition and they all sing
Adam's drum solos are 7 min, not 3. 😆 He's beast! 😉🥰🥰🥰
Some are 11 to 13
There is so much to these incredibly talented men. I would encourage you to listen to Take Me Home Country Roads. They all have solo parts and its an arrangement like you've never heard before. Its the best version you'll ever hear and an incredible tribute to John Denver.

@momD612 I prefer the Sing-Off version, too. Avi has an incredible voice, but it lacks a touch of a country vibe.
Helplessy Hoping shows off their pure vocals

The one with the beard is Avi and the long dark hair is the bass for Home Free - also has a 5 octave range
Folsom Prison Blues, another Jphnny Cash song with Home Free's influence. A must see video. At least in my opinion.
It is more like a 10 to 11 min drum solo
recs for songs were Rob sings the lead:
Never gonna give you up
Blue Ain't your color
Spaceship
9 to 5

Folsom Prison Blues, which they covered, is one of my favorites.
Adam's 2015 drum solo is phenomenal and it's almost 8 minutes long
Home Free always brings it! I would suggest Listen to the Music and/or Take Me Home Country Roads.
It's country a capella reggae!! 😄 Their cover of "Folsom Prison Blues" is pretty cool too!

Home Free was in Sing-off Season Four 2013. They did Ring of Fire a Johnny Cash cover. Please check it out if you would like. Thank you
We will!
You spoke of an Adam Rupp drum solo. IMO his best one is from 2015 and it’s 7 mins. long. It’s simply awesome.
