@Gera Hey Pretty sure he's going to say B12. B12 is needed for platelet generation and vegans often have low platelet counts. Platelets secrete growth factors that help repair weakened blood vessels (but too high platelet counts can cause the other kind of stroke due to clots). However, I came across a study that showed no association between B12 and hemorrhagic stroke, but did find an association with low folate:
      pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15933256/
Folate can be found in leafy greens (for some reason Swiss chard does not have much even though it is related to spinach). Broccoli, beans and lentils have a lot of folate, too.
There are some other things besides B12 that are likely protective against hemorrhagic stroke not found in abundance (or at all ) in a vegan diet - taurine, cysteine, and zinc.
      ~
My husband had to cut back on his B12 supplement since a blood test showed it was too high. He asked his doctor for the B12 test and the doctor agreed to it since my husband is a vegetarian. High B12 has been found to be associated with higher mortality, but it is unclear whether this is a consequence of cause of disease - but until more is known it is probably better not to go too high:
      www.alzforum.org/news/research-news/too-much-vitamin-b12-health-hazard
It might not be a good idea to make the assumption that excess amounts of water soluble vitamins are 'just peed out' and there are no effects (good or bad) from taking a lot at once. It is possible, for example, that there could be effects on the gut microbiome - microbes use vitamins, too.

chiyerano I think you’re fully understanding what refined fats are. because coconut, palm and olive oil are all refined oils. If you think coconut oil at +80% saturated fat with palm and olive oils also high in saturated fats are healthy this is not the case.

Could low intake of green vegetables (source of folate/B9) and/or low vitamin B12 status among the vegetarians be the explanation?

    • @rhyothemisprinceps1617
      @rhyothemisprinceps1617 4 года назад

He'll probably say B12 (he has said before the reason British vegans don't seem to have an overall mortality benefit is low B12 + overall crappy diet). However I came across this article that found an association for hemorrhagic stroke with folate status but not B12 status:
      pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15933256/
Puzzling since B12 is involved in platelet production and low platelet count could be the causal connection (vegans often have low platelets).
Other things that may be protective that are not found in abundance in a vegan diet are taurine, cysteine, and zinc. Taurine is especially important in the contexts of both high salt and high glycemic index food intakes.

I've been a vegetarian for a year or so -- or a little more -- twice in my life. Lost a lot of weight both times. In my opinion, unless someone has a lot of money, it is really hard not to eat vegan junk food. I remember in my poor late teens, eating a ketchup sandwich and thinking I was being healthy. I think for most people, it's way easier to actually eat healthy on a low-meat, flexitarian diet. If your rich, by all means, live it up. If your poor, flexitarian gives you healthier, affordable options. And by the way, one way of vegetarian failure is to "fall off the wagon." With flexitarianism, there is nothing to fall off of, so it can perpetually be adjusted and fine tuned.

Living with someone who buys a lot of processed vegan food for me though I write lists of fresh, whole foods and fresh frozen foods, but he eats everything he wants, animals, their secretions, dairy pizza, dairy ice cream, then also keeps all the fresh fruit, berries, dark leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, fresh garlic, most fruit and vegetables to himself in a separate refrigerator and freezer, has a chef prepare these for him along with meat, fish, eggs but nothing for me (I wouldn't touch a vegetable from that), and wonders why I'm exhausted and begging for food, maybe obsessed with it, and might later wonder why a healthy young vegan since birth had a stroke and he will probably determine it was the lack of animal product nutrients, the five pound processed food weight gain in as many months, not getting active, getting more angry, or the anti anxiety medication. Then he can talk about how I ruined his life and also about how he's so very sad for his loss. He'll get hours of conversations out of this.

3:31 - There is a slight flaw in saying designed to eat. Evolution means we adapt and change. So what we ate in the past millions of years ago, doesn't necessarily mean it's healthy today. Birds can eat lighters and rocks, so to assume that some how in the past we was doing things correctly, and now we're doing things incorrectly isn't really rational. One has to work out if it's healthy, not simply say we did it in the past. As in the person feels healthier, their body is acting optimally. One has to work out what leads to them being healthier overall.

I am giving monthly donations to nutritionfacts.org to get healthy, not entertained. So far in this "Vegetarians and Stroke Risk Factors" series I did not learn anything helpful. I complained about this in my comment on the previous video. This time I am making threat: get to the bottom line in the next video or I will stop my monthly donation. You are not putting my money to good use. Oh and if it's B12 I will also stop my donation, because this is not new (as I mentioned in my comment on the previous video), so this wont be putting my money to good use either.

Some vegans who are adamant about doing it "for the animals" will go so far as to disregard healthy vegan eating advice since they don't want to be seen as "health vegans," which they do not consider to be the "true" vegans..'

While it's getting a little annoying to wait for an answer, we know from this video that good things= higher fiber, lower sodium, high potassium. In general just a lot of fruit and vegetables, which a lot of vegetarians don't get so much. So it's helpful, but come on!
